We have a '76 FJ-40 that we'd like to install a tachometer on. I've never done this before. Where does it connect to to get the reading? Any brands of tachs that are better than others?
Is it a pretty easy process to wire up?

My plan is to cut out a circle and mount it on the glove box door.

I have an Autometer Pro-comp guage that I used a hose clamp to attach it on top of the steering column. It is simple to wire up. Just follow the directions. One wire to the coil, one to ground, one to switched hot. I think that is all there is to it.

The tach will have a diagram for wiring, but IIRC the white? wire will hook to the coil negative side. Autometer, VDO, Stewart, Sun and others are good choices

I've got the set up Eric mentioned. Hose clamped to the steering column. Works great.

just hose clamp it off to teh side of colum. auto meter = red power, black ground, green to negitive of teh coil, and white = acc power, then wire in teh light part into your pull switch for the lighting, jiMy

I used a small "sun" tach on the steering column (on top) like the others suggested. put strips of thin rubber under it to keep from marring it up. This way the only thing it blocks is the high beam indicator light, and is very visible with the rest of the guages......:D

If you really want to get trick, get the 2" version and mount it in the dash just to the right of the speedo. I've done 3 of these.
