OK, I've been running SM420 for years. I've had no problems with it. I built a jeep for my dad and put a SM420 in it with a 327 infront of it and a Dana 18 behind it. The first tranny we put in it split the 3rd gear syncro. I replaced the syncros and it worked great until two weeks later it got stuck in 4th gear and wouldn't shift more. I tried to pull it apart and the shift collar for 3 +4 gear wouldn't move. I put another tranny in it and now that tranny is getting stuck in 3rd gear! WTF. has anyone else had this problem?

well, I doubt this has anything to do with it, but it an sm420 problem, so I'll throw it out there:
buddy put an sm420 into his jeep behind a 4 cyl engine. At first he had the stock 231, he used an AA adapter for it. Then later he swapped axles, and swapped his xcase to a dana 300 to match the passenger side drop of the axles he swapped in. AA sent him a new 'spud' shaft to go on the end of the motor to mate to the (now) 23 spline of the dana 300. We put it all together, it seemed a little tight when bolting up, drove it around, BOOM! blew the output bearing out of it - twice. Finally figured out that the spud shaft was too long, as a result it was bottoming on the inpput shaft of the transfer case, and THAT was causing it to put pressure back on the output bearing of the transmission. A call to AA confirmed that in certain circumstances (with a certain mix of parts) the shaft was too long and would have to be 'trimmed'.
So I guess the lesson is make sure that the output shaft is not bottoming in the input shaft of the transfer case.

I guess this is a good posibility. Makes sense

hahaha, I would say clearance issues. The output shaft might be something to check. Maybe check the pilot bearing too.
How did the imput bearing feel when you put that other tranny in?
