Hey everyone, Im looking at leaving the "minitruck" world and going straight to the source, a 40 :D. I have an opportunity to pick up a 67 with a 283/sm420 combo with a transfercase off a 3spd cruiser. With the 4.11s will the 283 push 35s at highway speeds? Is there any compatibility problems with the length of the sm or the combo of the engine and tranny? Any info would be great.

Thanks

Pretty common combination back in the day. 283 isnt a 350 but should scoot the 40 along no problem if its in decent shape.

The 420 is an old truck transmission so its going to shift like, well... An old truck.

Cruiser 3-speed case is lower geared than the 4-speed cases but the actual case isnt as strong as the 4-speed case is. Case savers are cheap and not a bad thing IMO.

Got any pics?

It should.....as long as it's a strong running motor. The sm420 tranny is almost as short as the original 3 speed in it plus has the granny low of 7:1. The tranny is one of the shortest and lowest geared out there...... The v8 is also actually lighter than the original 6 so it is probably a good combo. This was THE combo to have before decent autos, injection, and atlases came out :D I'd be more concerend with what kind of axles are in it. Pre 68/69 axles are weaker and more difficult to upgrade than 69 and up. Take a look at the front and make sure it looks like a bigger version of your mini axle. Chances are that the PO upgraded the axles when they swapped the motor and tranny.....
