: Dana 44
big giant head 10-16-2008, 03:50 PM What have I got here?
Closed knuckle Dana 44 ( I know you guys say this is junk but...)
I got a deal on a set, front and rear 8 lug for $200, and when I disassembled the front this is what I found
Passenger side, long axle (this joint is huge)

Compared to Drivers side short axle

82F100SWB 10-16-2008, 04:04 PM That long side shaft is a 44HD part, same joint that a Dana 50 TTB uses.
Looks like the drivers side has a standard 44 joint. I think you have a 44HD that someone stuck a standard 44 DS shaft into.
Looks like that long side is 30 spline? at one point I was going to see if a person couldn't use a TTB50 outer in one of those axles to build a full 30 spline axle, but, I never did get around to it..

Nah they are both 19 spline, but the bigger shaft is almost an inch wider at the joint
I don't know if it is HD because it is also low pinion
Edit: actually i'm not sure if it is 19 or 30 spline but they are both the same
82F100SWB 10-16-2008, 04:59 PM On the 30 spline part, I was referring to the inners, it looks it. For some reason the info I had found had the inners made out to be 19 spline also.
It has to be a HD, a standard 44 wouldn't fit that big joint in the knuckle.

44HD/TTB50/Closed Knuckle 60 joint(Precision 231 pictured, Spicer calls the HD a 5-86x and 50/Closed Knuck 60 a 5-282x)vs a standard 297X 44 joint(precision 371.)
The HD joint is a 1350 series wheel joint, while a standard 44 joint is a 1310 series wheel joint.

Yeah I figured you were referring to the inners.
But about fitting in the knuckle? I'll take some pics of it at school tomorrow
I had to remove the knuckle on the passenger side to get the axle out, while in the drivers side it slid right through the opening
Edit: you're right about the joint being the same as the standard 1350 joint
JGVABronco78 10-16-2008, 08:17 PM The balls on the closed knuckle should be soft-ball sized, as opposed to base-ball sized. The HD joint would not fit in an LD hosing, so it must be an LD axle in one side of an HD housing.
Were the hubs HD or standard Spicer? The outer stubs are about an inch longer for the HD stubs and hubs/knuckles. They must be, because I don't think you can bolt LD spindles to HD knuckles, but not positive.
Its either the LD's or the HD knuckles on the old closed-knuckles that break with the traditional Ford 5-stud spindle, and have the industry standard 6-stud spindle.
JGVABronco78 10-16-2008, 09:01 PM Btw, the donor for that LD shaft had to be a 76/77 low-pinion, open knuckle, disc braked F-250 D44. That is the only model that had a standard sized u-joint and a long enough stub for the HD hubs which they still used in 76/77, even though they did away with the HD axle when they went open-knuckle. All LD's 75 and back would have had a 1" shorter stud for the standard hubs, and all HD's 75 and back with the longer stub would have had the bigger joint.
big giant head 10-17-2008, 03:13 PM Well as promised here are a few pics I took at school today

And by the way these knuckles are a lot bigger than a softball
woodchuck2 10-19-2008, 07:20 PM I used to have one of those many years ago, used to be my dads truck. 1968 F-250 high boy, truck had the HD front axle and 17" tires. We had chains on all 4 wheels and an old hand crank wrecker boom, the truck made one hell of a skidder. We never broke an axle in it either which surprised the hell out of me, my F-150 HP D-44 would break axles on level ground just dragging junk around.
