: My first YJ Build... I'm So $crewed
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-16-2008, 07:55 PM First off, I want to say thanks for all the great research I've been able to get off the site in the past year.
Now for a little background, I've got a 93 YJ with 4" pro-crap lift, 3" body and 33" Buckshots. For the past 4 years I haven't been able to work on my jeep since I was in the Navy and didn't have the tools or time to work on it.
I finished my enlistment earlier this year and decided to go back to college this fall. I enrolled in the Auto Body course at ASU and on the first day of school, my instructor told us we could bring in one project vehicle to work on, I had my jeep on a trailer and down there a week later. That was in August so I'll do my best to try and catch everyone up.
The plans for now:
-Tube Fenders
-Comp Corners
-Homemade Rocker Panels/Rock Sliders
-Roll on bedliner in Tub
-Fix rotted out windshield frame
-CJ Tailgate
-Remove Body Lift
-Repaint
Plans for the Future:
-Replace POS AX-15 Transmission to a NP435
-Replace transfercase to NP205
-Do a spring over lift
-Find a 14 Bolt/Dana 60 rearend
-Find a Dana 60 (or anything stronger than a dana 30) front
-Fuel Cell
-New roll cage
-New Seats
-Storage box in rear
-Anything else that comes up
Ok now for some pics....

Well, That is pretty much what has been done up to today. If you got any ideas or any help on what I may be doing wrong, I would gladly appreciate it.
Oh yeah, hopefully this will be my new tow rig (wife's daily driver) if I can ever get the stealership to come down on the price....

jpfrk2001 10-16-2008, 08:57 PM Looks like a great start at something grand. I might have a front axle you could be interested in.
Any chance on resizing the pics a little bigger? Looks good. good luck
Alfred W. 10-16-2008, 10:55 PM Nice build can I have your shifter bracket for the NP-231 that mounts on the AX-15 ?
Also get an 8.8 out of a 1996 or newer crown vic police or a MK VIII It's wider than the Ranger 31 spline with disk brakes. Also Grandma needs a new rear end is better at the U-pull it Than "I'm modding my JEEP!"
I got mine for $165 with rotors in great shape!

DeezNutzOffRoad 10-17-2008, 04:37 AM Thanks everyone for looking, as far as risizing the pics, you should be able to click on them and they will open a new window and be bigger. I just bought the red star this morning, so if there are certain pics you want bigger just let me know and I'll try and post them.
<update- pics should be better now>
Alfred, I thought about going with the 8.8 but will it be big enough to turn 40" tires with out breaking stuff left and right?
The Black Sheep 10-17-2008, 04:53 AM Since you did the comp cut...you are gonna stretch the wheelbase now.....right???
Looks like a good start. Also I hope you are not gonna spend too much time on the body work, chances are you will ding it up the first time you go out. And i know you spend the ching on the 3/16" rockers, but if you can afford it, you really should consider 1/4".

Yeah, i plan on stretching it once I get it home to my shop. For the rockers though, I just got some scrap metal laying around at work for free and had them bent. The only thing I had to buy was the tubing.
bgredjeep 10-17-2008, 06:32 AM Looks like a good start. And you get credits? nice.
I don't think you'll have any trouble with 3/16" rockers. I've landed pretty hard on mine many times with no damage to date.
btw, you included the poster shot for why people say a 3" bl is bad.

Yeah, I'm getting credits for it (I can't believe it either, I lucked out). I'm trying to finish out my Associates Degree in Applied Science. As for the body lift, it was already on the Jeep when I bought it and I always wanted to take it off, just never had the time or was too lazy.
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-17-2008, 06:50 PM Nice build can I have your shifter bracket for the NP-231 that mounts on the AX-15 ?
Once I get my Jeep back home we can talk about that shifter bracket...
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-18-2008, 09:27 PM Didn't get much done this Friday. Started working on the windshield frame to repair some of the rusted out spots. I cut a piece of filler metel up at work a couple days ago to use on the ws frame. Grinded down and cleaned up one of the smaller spots to be repaired and cut the filler metal to length. Put a couple of tack welds on both sides to see how it looked and then filled it in with a good bead on. After that just grinded down the welds and this is how it turned out....
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5188/p9270125ea2.jpg
Just a pic of me welding...
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5181/p9270130lt4.jpg
Started working on the larger area after i got done with this, but wasn't able to finish cause I had to leave for work at 11.... Oh well, I'll just finish up on monday.
Alfred W. 10-18-2008, 11:52 PM Thanks everyone for looking, as far as risizing the pics, you should be able to click on them and they will open a new window and be bigger. Get bigger Axles. now about that shifter for the transfer case.....:D AFTER you swap out the NP231
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-20-2008, 06:15 PM So I didn't get much done today. I figured that when I went in this morning I would just be able to grind down the welds that I did on friday and get the windshield frame ready for primer and paint. Long story short, I found just a little spot of rust on the ws frame that I thought was surface rust. Grinded on it for a little bit and it became a pretty good size hole.
Here is a pic of it after I started doing some welds to fill in the hole.
http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3396/p9300135at4.jpg
After about 20-30 mins of welding and grinding on the hole, this is how it came out... I'm pretty happy with it...
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9171/p9300136rf1.jpg
So I still have some more grinding and prep work to be done before it's ready for primer and paint. But I'll be at school all day tomorrow (don't have to go into work), so maybe i'll be able to get some crap done finally.
Here is just another pic of what is left to do.
http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/4601/p9300138uy4.jpg
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-21-2008, 06:58 PM Didn't get much done today... Finished grinding down the welds on the windshield frame and knocked some surface rust off some other spots on it... I'm going use some seam sealer on the front where I welded to help water proof it---hopefully that works... Besides that I repaired some spots on the Jeep that had been damaged a couple years ago. I had one of the body mount bolts come through the bottom of the tub and a couple more body mounts that had been broken through. So I just cut some plates and welded some nuts on top of them to use as the body mounts... Sry but didn't take any pics today...
yjkevin 10-21-2008, 11:26 PM Alfred an 8.8 out of a Crown Vic would be a link type suspension and thinner axle tubes. The better Setup would be out of an explorer with or without disc brakes as long as it has 31 splines. Check the tag on the diff with your local parts dept. Also an older model with drum brakes can be made to work with the factory YJ rear brake cables. Ask me how.

You know Black Sheep It's about time you stop bagging on the newb's in this site and start helping them out. Yeah you've built a sweet rig, but time and time again I've read and seen you Chastise them for what they have done or not done to your liking. It's time for you to get off your high horse and actually encourage those that actually have the will or the will try something new and the courage to ask for advise:flipoff2:.
yjkevin 10-21-2008, 11:51 PM By the way if you didn't notice Blacksheep he is working at a shop to earn his credentials as a body man so stop bagging on the body work. Some people actually like to have a decent looking rig when they wheel!!!!!

There are allot of Crown Vic police specials out there. and they aint going to have a thin Axle tube.
My Axle tube are thick enough, same as an F-150. and if they were not I'd truss them. And guess what. I know how to use a torch and a welder, thats how I got the 8.8 to fit in my YJ with leaf springs. I wanted the wider axle. I wanted the disk breaks. And I am speaking having done it a over a year ago. And my emergency cables work to.
Now how did Alfred W. do these amazing things..... Because Alfred has been an ASE auto mechanic since 1978 ( When were you born? yea thought so) and I got a Degree in Aviation maint. Tech. I gragamated with a 96% 2nd in my class. (That means in plane language I can fix the things that fly.) And having spent 17 years as a level one Caterpillar mechanic. And now I work for a company that puts allot of fans together and call them of all things get this........Jet engines, some go in to the F-22.

People laughed at my rear bumper also. But its round doesn't hang up and will soon be charged by a york 210 for compressed air up to 200 psi. Its a 8,000 psi hydraulic tube NOT pipe. And keep people from riding my ass! The Number one reason I installed it.

I think it will hold up just fine, like anything else. Don't drive like a like a retard.
Deeznutzoffroad its your Jeep your paying for the parts, and you build it exactly like you want it. I only offer ideas. You can take them or not but I do not talk out my ass. NOW the tube Diameter is a little smaller, BUT the tube thickness is not. I had the thing open, I put in 4:11's

Seems like constructive criticism to me. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks comp cut w/o stretch is ghey. I'll even go so far as to say comp cut w/o a link set up seems rather pointless.
And yes, this is supposed to be the flame free Jeep forum, but it's still Pirate, fer chrissakes. Grow a little skin folks.
Nice work, Deez, btw. :flipoff2: for getting credit to work on your rig.
minam44 10-22-2008, 06:08 PM Sweet build man!!!!
Looks like you are finally doing some real metal work.:smokin:
All that talk about "When I get home.........." Is starting to pay off huh?
Throw some bigger axles and some 38's on it and come out to the Hammers with me.:D:D
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-22-2008, 08:13 PM First off, WOW... I wasn't expecting all that crap when I got home from work today.... As for the 8.8 axle-It is a great idea if I wanted to keep it a daily driver, but that got shot out the window a long time ago... But I do appreciate the help....
As for the comp cuts- I do think that doing them without a strech looks a little fruity, but it isn't goin to stay that way forever... I do plan on doing a strech once I save up some more money and find some bigger axles and some waggy or similar leaf springs... Also, due to the fact that I'm taking an AUTO BODY course, there are some things that I'm not going to be able to do at the shop at school (ex. change axles, transmission/transfercase, engine, leaf springs, or anything not body related)... But unlike some, I'm going to school full-time, working 30-40 hrs a week, and supporting 2 kids and a wife on top of that... So some of these thing aren't going to be done overnight... So just be patient...
I guess I'll get off my little soap box now cuz I'm done venting...

jpfrk2001 10-22-2008, 08:53 PM If your looking for an economic way to stretch the rear, look into a set of rear leafs from a 2002 dodge dakota 4wd. then fab up some way back shackle mounts off the rear frame. this will move the rear axle back 10.5 inches! Ask me how I know.

Im just finishing up mine right now. THere is also a thread in here comparing spring sizes. I saw alot of talk about spring packs from early to mid 90's dodge dakota's. Well, the junkyard had a 2002 and I just grabbed em. I thought I was going to get about 7-8" but ended up with a 10.5" when finished.

Hey I feel ya. I got a baby due in Jan. Well the post was not directed at you. I just wanted the rest to know you are the one paying for your mods on YOUR jeep and it only has to make YOU happy.
minam44 10-23-2008, 04:59 PM I have the same thing going here, with a little one on the way in March. I just got back on monday from my last wheelin trip til probably next October. I guess its time for a complete tear down of my F-toy and do some things that never got finished from the begining..
My biggest piece of advice is... Do it right the first time..:D
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-23-2008, 06:56 PM Well, I wish both of yall (Jon and Alfred) the best of luck with a new one on the way...
Hopefully I'll be done with the Jeep by the time you rebuild your F-Toy...
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-23-2008, 07:05 PM Alright a little update...
Finished up both of the body mounts on the rear of the Jeep today. They had basically been destroyed by that 3" body lift, so I ended up rebuilding the whole mounts... Lots of cuttin, grinded, and welding upside down (which sucks)
One of the main guys down at the school that has been helping me on this was able to get the tailgate in the paint booth today and shoot some primer on it... Here are a couple of pics..

yjkevin 10-27-2008, 02:31 PM Alfred W. First off no one was questioning your knowledge or the fact that you could put in a Crown Vic rear axle:flipoff2: I too was giving an opinion just like you. Based on the number of writeups and personal experience the Explorer is a more straight forward swap, are plentifull and can be had on the cheap. And like you concurred has larger axle tubes. I really dont care if you have been ASE certified, jet mechanic or whatnot. We are building Jeeps, not Jets.
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-28-2008, 04:44 PM Alright, time for a little update.
Things have been slow going up at school. We have had more cars come in lately that needed small things done to them, so some of the kids that have been helping me got pulled off to work on them.
We got the corners, entry guard, and the piece I made that goes right below the tail gate in the paint booth today. I've been waiting since Thursday to use one of the two booths that they have down there, but some of them guys just like to take their sweet time.
So here are some pics.
Got everything hung up ready for the etching primer.

Here it is after two coats of etching primer.

Next came other two coats of regular primer.

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/543/pa080153td7.jpg
While I was letting that dry, I started to work on the tub to get it ready for the bed liner. All I had left to remove was the front seats and the roll cage. I'll tell ya what, the bolts for the roll cage was a PITA. I only got 4 out of the 12 to come out. After breaking one of the torx bits and stripping another bit, along with stripping the rest of the POS bolts, I ended up welding on some nuts to the top of them to try and get them off. Just to let ya know, I'm still working on getting all of them out.
As for the bolts for the front seat, I broke off 3 out of the 8 bolts and stripped two more on top of that. My track record aint that good when it comes to the bolts on this jeep. So some time this week, I'm goin have to drill out those bolts. I'm just ready to get my jeep outta there and back home. Two weeks ago a 64 mustang was stolen from the Auto Mech Shop next door. So the security at this place ain't that great.
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-02-2008, 08:18 PM Didn't get much done on Thurs and Friday. I was able to get the rest of the bolts out from the seats and roll cage. Mainly, I've just been get the tub prepped for the Herculiner. Here are some pics from last week. Hopefully I'll be able to roll it on tomorrow.

jeepian YJ 11-03-2008, 06:44 PM Nice job dude...it's coming together very well
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-05-2008, 07:24 PM Alright, so i had a pretty big set back this week... Went in monday and finished up prepping and taping off the tub before I went to work. But as soon as I got to work I came down with some type of stomach virus and was sick as hell till today and wasn't able to get anything done on the Jeep. Finally went down to school today and got to put the Herc on...
Here is another pic of it being prepped and taped...

The rest of the Jeep...

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/3707/pa160174yd2.jpg
The pics really don't do any justice... I had to leave to go to work right after I got done pulling the tape off, but so far I am pretty happy and impressed with the way it came out. I guess I will find out tomorrow if it got screwed up by anyone down at the school while I was gone...
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-12-2008, 04:34 PM Well, Its been about a week since I've been able to get on here and give an update. I finally got over that stomach virus, but my son ended up getting it and then giving it to my fiance, so it ended up going around the entire family. Anyways, to catch ya up, for the past couple of days I've been prepping the body for primer and was finally able to get it in the booth.
We pushed it in yesterday afternoon and started taping and wrapping everything.

DeezNutzOffRoad 11-12-2008, 04:47 PM Next we put on two coats of surface primer on the parts that were going to be covered up and three coats on the spots that were going to be exposed...

Also I found out today that the last day of school is supposed to be the Dec 2nd and we also get three days off for Thanksgiving. So, that means I've got 10 days to get this Jeep finished and out of there. They don't want anything setting up over the christmas break, since a 64 mustang (that was sweet) was stolen from the automotive shop about a month ago.

DeezNutzOffRoad 11-12-2008, 06:06 PM looks great! i want to paint mine some time at home but dont know where to start... i have a compressor lol but thats it
What color are you wanting to go with it??? I thought about changing the color on mine, but in order to do it right I would have to pull the engine out so I could get the firewall... But with doing this at the school, that wasn't really an option...
Mean_Green 11-12-2008, 06:54 PM somethin similar to my current green prolly. but with all the new panels, fenders, body work and all it till need it when im done... last time i painted my front fenders they couldnt match the jeep right on cuz of the metalics and age
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-14-2008, 05:41 PM somethin similar to my current green prolly. but with all the new panels, fenders, body work and all it till need it when im done... last time i painted my front fenders they couldnt match the jeep right on cuz of the metalics and age
I meant to tell ya yesterday that the sherwin williams here in town is able to color match the paint to match the vehicle. All you gotta do is bring in a panel or a piece of metal that was cut off that still has paint on it and they have a gun looking thing that reads the color and mixes it to match. If you got a sherwin williams store around ya, I'm sure they should be able to do it. I hope this helps...
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-14-2008, 05:53 PM So my paint finally came in. I orginally order two quarts, thinking that would be enough. But I had to order two more cuz with the time limit I'm on right, I couldn't afford to run out of paint and have to wait on some more to come in. So anyways, here are some pics of the parts I was able to paint today.
Me spraying the first base coat.

DeezNutzOffRoad 11-14-2008, 06:09 PM nice body work, you have to pay for all the stuff for the jeep or does the school
Thanks man, I've really been workin my ass off to get this done on time... The school has only paid for the etching primer and surface primer, which is a good thing, cuz with all the bare metal I had, I would of spent over $200 just in primer. I've had to pay for everything else- nuts, bolts, tube fenders, comp corners, CJ7 tailgate, new body mounts, seals, top coat and clear coat paint. But just being able to work on my jeep and get school credit for it makes it all worth the money right now...
wranglerboy93 11-14-2008, 06:19 PM Nice paint job. I'd have you paint my shit anytime. I just hope with that nice shiny paint job you not afraid to get it dirty and scratched up. Looking real good is it a silver color? Should look good when its all completed. I wish I could take my shit apart and paint it up all nice like that.
jpfrk2001 11-14-2008, 07:35 PM Now you must extend the WB like I mentioned before to match the comp cut rear. You can use stock XJ springs to get a modest extension(about 7 inches). If you use the dakota springs, that will get you 10.5". Good job and kudo's for getting credit for it in school:grinpimp:

Thanks man, This is actually my first time painting with metallic paint. I painted for 3 years in the Navy on the F-18. But that was mainly base coat gray and every now and then some gloss colors. I run a paint shop for a factory out here that makes farm equipment, but again we just paint mainly black and it covers up real well. Anyways, once this is all done I'm not goin have a problem with rubbin it up against a tree or rock. Don't get me wrong, I'm goin do my best to keep it off of them, but if it happens it ain't goin be nothin to cry about.
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-17-2008, 03:31 PM Well, not much of an update... I had to take this week off of work in order to finish the Jeep in time. Worked the better half of the morning getting the body ready for paint. Then this afternoon had to spray a couple spots with primer and base/clear coat it.

I know this picture looks like crap... I swear its the camera. It looks better in person, plus its going to be covered up anyways...
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/7523/pa280229cq7.jpg
I only sprayed two coats on the parts that are going to be covered up and three on the spots that were exposed. I really hope I can finish putting all this together this week...
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-18-2008, 06:06 PM Alright, so I got the tube fenders put on today along with the rear corners. Once I got everything lined up, I taped everything off again and sprayed some fresh undercoating. I tell ya, at $6 a can, that stuff goes quick...

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/7920/pa290234fk9.jpg
I was also able to get the rock sliders, one door, and those cheap roll bar attachments painted. You can't really see in the pics, but I've been trying to rush through this and hurry up, and it didn't help when it came to painting today. I had some small runs and sags in the rock sliders and the metal flake on the door didn't come out even. The instructor for the class started telling me what all has to be done to fix them. But I told him a tree rubbin up against them is going to get those runs out... :lmao:

rustybottoms88 11-18-2008, 07:11 PM Hey man, looks really good. Good to see another Arkansas fella on here. I am building a YJ myself. Big plans like you but got to wait on the money. All in good time. I am going to do a one link front and rear but jpfrk2001 has a great idea with the dodge dakota leafs if you aren't looking to link it and would like alittle stretch. He def knows what he is talking about i have looked over alot of his projects on here especially his thread on turbo'in his 4.0 and he knows his shnit. Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing the finished product. bythe way where you get your tube fenders? I am putting some on mine to but i did some shopping and got them from alittle place in Ohio for 175 a set, just hope they are gonna fit right. Looks good and good luck.:smokin:

Hey there man, I gotta say that ur the first one i've meet on here anywhere close to Arkansas... What part are you from??? I hope your build goes better than mine has been goin lately, good luck with it... Like you and jpfrk were saying, I really like the idea of using dakota springs. I've already been asking around for some. As for the tube fenders and comp corners, I got them from SniperFab out of Oklahoma. I got them to go ahead and weld up the fenders cause my welding skills aren't really there yet. They were a little bit more then the ones you are talking about ( $285 after the welding option ) but it was really worth the money. They fit good and the welds look great.
mountaineer06 11-19-2008, 08:17 PM nice thread and pics. Its obvious you are having buckets of fun working on your jeep and its looking good. I also started with a 93 and made the mistake of thinking that one day the build and bleeding bank account would end .. it wont, its a sickness and the only cure is poverty ....
my friendly advice is to build it to do the things you want it to do and what is fun for you, build it to keep it off its roof while youre doing those things, and dont build it to do the things you see rigs doing in Petersens unless you want to do the same things ....
rustybottoms88 11-20-2008, 04:15 PM Hey man I am over around the Fort Smith Area. Right close to Cass and the fourwheel park at Byrds. So i enjoy that. I am originally from harrison but my work has brought me down here. Where do you wheel at over their? I know of the superlift park in Hot Springs but i have not been their yet. Well I am going to be pullin my axles out from underneath the donor truck this weekend. Going with a 3/4 ton axle swap. Thanks for the good wishes and don't worry i am sure once you get yours back together you will be feeling better about it. look forward to seeing the finished product. :grinpimp:
By the way i feel your pain on the rust problem. I didn't choose my user name for nothing haha, my YJ is originally from New York if that gives you any idea, but oh well if it was nice i would be afraid to do much with it haha, can't beat the price i got it for either.

Man, you're lucky to be living close to Byrds. I took my sister out there a couple years before I joined the Navy for a competion they had out there ( It was a month or two before they had RocktoberFest ). Anyways, me and my family moved here from California after getting out of the Navy in early April, so I don't really know of any good places to wheel out here yet. Plus my jeep has been out of commision for the past 5 years, so it has been a long time since I've gotten to get in it and beat it up. Once I get it ready to hit the trails I can't wait to take it down to the superlift park and see what they got. I just need to win the lottery to pay for all the stuff I need to get done. Once I get done with this school, we are planning on moving down around cabot/North Little Rock area, so that will put us about an hour and a half away. The time can't come soon enough.
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-24-2008, 05:56 PM So here lately I have been in overdrive trying to get as much done at the school before I have to bring it back. Along with problems of working on the Jeep, I have been trying to buy my fiance a SUV before christmas with no luck there.
Anyways, Friday I replaced the rear crossmember that was tore and bent up a long time ago with a piece of 1/4 metal I had bent up at work. After alot of cutting with the plasma, grinding, and welding I finally got it on and love the way it came out. I just hope that my welds are strong enough to hold it all together for a while. So today we took off the 3" body lift and lowered it back onto the frame and even though it sits lower right now, I have to say that I love it without the lift. So I guess its time for some pics.

http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/471/pb040245jt0.jpg
ROXROES 11-25-2008, 10:19 AM Yes as that is a 9500 lb rated D Ring (or close to it), and your Jeep may weigh 4000 lbs or so. However I usually suggest to people to use the threaded D rings for safety reasons.
Jeep looks real good.

Thanks man... I tried to find a threaded D Ring, but the tractor supply store didn't have one in the size I was looking for...
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-25-2008, 06:47 PM So today was the last day to work on my Jeep down at the school. I got some of the major stuff done that I wanted to do, but today was a madhouse trying to get everything done. I'm happy to finally have it out of the school, but since it is back in my shop its going to be slow going for a while till I get some of the tools that I need to finish everything.
Well, here are some pics of it on the trailer right before I left the school.

I'll try and get some close up pics this week if yall want them.
By the time I got home it was already dark and I couldn't get any good pics to come out once I got it off the trailer.
Alfred W. 11-26-2008, 07:34 AM Good Job! I hope you got 2 gold stars an a Smiley face!:grinpimp:
About the D ring Use it for a fishing weight. Farm supply may SELL them, but you DON"T have to BUY them. They can get you, a family member, friend, or passer-by (with a law suit happy lawyer in their family) KILLED. Hell I got a 20 ton one Screw pin shackle is the proper term for them. But Kudo's on the build kid.
rustybottoms88 11-29-2008, 08:39 AM hey man look really nice. You should be proud of that paint and that tailgate looks kickin. I like those rockguards to:smokin:. If you don't have any luck finding a scew type d-ring and you make your way towards harrison sometime let me know i have a friend that has a whole pile of them. Today i am getting exhaust put back on the ole rust bucket. I had drug the old muffler off at Byrds  Later man
jpfrk2001 11-29-2008, 12:29 PM Damn that came out nice:smokin: And it looks SOOOO much better with the body lift off. Gotta stretch the rear and front to match the fenders. looks good.
minam44 11-30-2008, 07:38 AM The rig looks awesome:smokin:
Now its time to take it out and beat on it. Break the axles and springs so you have a reason to upgrade:flipoff2::flipoff2:
rustybottoms88 12-05-2008, 07:01 AM I just had a earth shattering idea, you know the d ring you got, well if you wanted to use it i would just take the pin out of it you have and get a high tensile strength bolt and nut and use that....safety issue might be solved that way but heck what do i know? :homer:
DeezNutzOffRoad 01-12-2009, 08:41 PM Ok, I guess I've been on a winter hiatus. It has been crazy around here since I brought my Jeep back from school. I'm sorry to say, but I was not able to do a single thing to the Jeep so far. But I did get married to the woman that I love (just in case she happens to read this) and had to drive all the way down to Texas to get her the truck that she wanted.
2004 Yukon XL----I don't think I'll have a problem pulling a trailer and Jeep with this thing
http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3367/pb160257kx1.jpg
Anyways, now that I've started school again, it has kinda given me a push to start working on the jeep again.
First thing I plan to get done is switch out that POS AX-15 tranny and NP231 with a rebuilt NP435 and NP205 that is just sitting in the shop right now collecting rust.
I'm goin start looking for the bellhousing I need to match up to the 4.0L thats already in the jeep. I'm pretty sure the one I need is out of a CJ-7 with a T-150 or T-176 tranny. If I'm wrong or yall think differently please let me know before I go wasting money on stuff I don't need.
Next, I want to twin-stick the 203 and I know you can do it yourself, but I would much rather buy the kit, just so I can rely on it when I finally get on the trail.
If I can ever get that far, then I will start looking for the axles, redoing the suspension (streching) , and get some beefier tires.
Also, I want to thank everyone for the comments and for keeping me motived and pushing me to get this thing done.

rustybottoms88 01-13-2009, 04:44 PM hey man glad to see your going to get back to it. I am looking forward to seeing some more progress, since none is really being done on mine. Altho i did get some small things done over Christmas break. I got my electric fan mounted and my tube fenders put on the front clip. I will tell ya puttin those tube fenders on and keeping your existing inner fenders can be somewhat of a b*tch. Anyway i am looking forward to this tranny swappin to go on may give me some ideas! Good luck!

And actually, the AX-15 is not as weak as every one thinks. Its actually on par with a NV3500/3550, if not, stronger. I hear the only weak link is 5th gear. If your not running a motor with more the say 350hp and 350 on trq, you should be good.
But if you really want to get rid of it and Alfred W. flakes on you, I claim second dibs. I need a tranny to do some R&D on any ways.
Congrats on your new family.
wranglerboy93 01-13-2009, 07:28 PM I'm surprised no one said it but good looking wife. Lucky man she's good looking and allows you to work on the jeep like you've been. Your doing pretty good I'd say. Cheers to you. That Yukon should pull the jeep no problem. What engine does it have in it? We pulled a 47 Pontiac woodie to Wisconsin in my dads 2000 Tahoe with the 5.3 and it pulled it no problem. You should be more then fine in that Yukon. Jeeps loooking real good keep it up man.
DeezNutzOffRoad 01-14-2009, 07:27 PM Alfred thanks for that link... as for the tranny, I'm not going to be able to ship it.... Once I get it out of the Jeep and cleaned up then we'll try and work something out... Also, I'll go ahead and tell everyone the sync gears have been blown out for awhile now (aka a couple of years) and if you got anything bigger than 33" tires you might as well count 5th gear out, cuz it wouldn't even pull my jeep going down a hill with the wind pushing it.
Anyways, its good to hear from all yall again and thanks for the comments... I hope yall had a good christmas.
Rustybottom, you gotta show me some pics of how your fenders came out... I hope my lil write-up helped out a little bit...
And wranglerboy, I can't tell ya how many brownie points your comment gave me today... Maybe now, she'll let me spend some more money on my jeep... As for the Yukon, it has the 5.3L with the tow package.... I'm sure it should be fine, I'm going put a trailer brake controller on it sometime down the road....
Ok, now for the jeep.... So like I said earlier, I started back to school last week and my instructor has been hassling me to bring the doors back in cause they had some dry spray on them... Now I know this doesn't really have anything to do with getting the jeep in running condition, but we don't have anything to do down there right now and I've got some left over paint, so I figured "what the hell, I might as well"... So, I'm taking those down to school tommorow and I'll throw some updates on them later this week...
Now for a little bit of a set back... I don't know if I told yall before, but me, my wife and youngest son are staying with my family untill I get done with my Associates Degree. The jeep in down in my dad's shop which is about 50 yards or so from the house. The problem is, the shop doesn't have electricity, which makes it kinda hard to work in there... I talked to the wifey tonight and we are going to start looking at getting a bid from some electricians to figure out how much it is going to cost to run power along with 220 down to the shop so I can finally get something done... Well thats where I'm at now...
Alfred W. 01-14-2009, 08:12 PM Well I was looking for a cheap project to rebuild over time, not a need it now thing. I know it can suck not having your own place right now....... But first things first! get that degree the rest will follow. Later on if you feel like bothering with shipping it we shall talk ok.
wranglerboy93 01-15-2009, 01:34 PM Thats exactly what we had going to Wisconsin it worked great. 5.3 tow package and the brake controller and your good to go. Glad I could help ya score some points.
rustybottoms88 01-15-2009, 05:47 PM hey man pm me your email and i will send you some pics. I can't post pics or can not figure out how anyway. I probably have to be a red star to do that. :D
Alfred W. 01-16-2009, 11:13 AM Well after an emergency C-section my wife had a baby girl. Here is my Jasmine.

Deeznut's rebuild that ax-15 and run it. i'm suprised what kind of abuse those can hold up to. Good Looking family and build. looks like you are having fun and that's what it is all about.
DeezNutzOffRoad 01-17-2009, 05:20 PM Alfred, sry man that i'm not going to be able to help out.... Just let me know if you ever plan on coming up around arkansas and if i can ever get the tranny out the we'll work on meetin up somewhere... Also, congrats on the new one, trust me they are a handful.
Wranglerboy, thanks again. Any comments like that will ALWAYS help the cause... (me getting to work more on the jeep)
Rustybottom, I got the pics. They look really good, just let me know if you want me to post any of the pics and i'll put them up on here....
cj5 buggy, I thought about rebuilding that tranny, but I got a really good deal on a rebuilt ford NP435 and NP205 along with spare gears and spare housing from a guy on here. Plus I like the idea of having a 6.68 to 1, 1st gear ratio. Along with being have to twin-stick the 205 and maybe double up with a 203 later on down the road.
Well, once it warms up out here and gets out of the below freezing temps. I'm going to try and get some pics of some stuff I need to get rid of-(Xenon Fender Flares, center console, and other little things here and there.) Like I said, I'll try and get some pics and prices up on here later...

Hey DeezNutz, if you get time you can post some of my pics. I got pics from start to finish to if you think they would help other folks. i have searched and seen several people asking for a begining to end tube fender bolt on while retaining the original inner fenders. OF course you have some good pics of yours on here already. Anyways i am curious as to what ford vehicles have the NP435 and NP205? I am not up to snuff on my trannys and transfer cases. My donor truck is a 77 ford 3/4ton. I know it has a C6 tranny but unsure of the transfer case and if it would be a good choice for wheeling.
But i am looking forward to see how yours comes together. BY the way the last weekend of this month there is a wheeling event going on in Seymore, Mo. One of my buddies invited me to roll with him up to it. Its 65$ to get you and your jeep in plus two meal tickets and a hoodie....not to bad i thought. THats about all i know about it anyone interested i can find out more. later man

Hey man, only one of the pics came out good, the other two came out really small and when I tried to make it larger it just got distorted....
here it is for everyone

Also, I appreciate the offer, but the jeep is nowhere near ready to hit the trails yet... I've still got some repairs to do from when I took off the 3" body lift... The steering is binding on me now and the exhuast hangers were broken when we dropped the body down....
Also, here are some links for the ford tranny and transmission you asked about...

DeezNutzOffRoad 02-11-2009, 08:59 PM Well, I havn't been able to work on the jeep for a while now. As some of yall may know, Arkansas got hit with a pretty bad ice storm a couple of weeks ago. We lost power on Jan 27 and didn't get it back untill Feb 5 (over a week without any power) There are still people north of us that it may take 4-6 more weeks before they get any power. Anyways, we had tons of trees and branches come down on the land and have spent the last 2 weekends trying to clean up everything and have barely made a dent in it.
Well, here are some before and after pics...
Here is the road going beside the house and down to shop....

And now the shop...
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/4033/house036ec3.jpg
I mentioned before that I was going to try and get power ran out to the shop... Well, I had an electrician and the power company come out and look at the land before the ice storm.... The power company quoted me $2,000 - $2,500 just to get power ran from the street to a meter on the shop... Then the electrician said it would be around another 2 grand to get all the stuff I wanted hooked up in the shop.... Well, I told them it wasn't going to happen till I won the lottery.... Looks like i'm going to be working by a flashlight for a little while longer...
Also, I've been looking for a CJ bellhousing that came off a T-150 or T-176 tranny.... I've been checking ebay, local junk yards, and on here and havn't had much luck... If you know anyone that has one sitting around, it would be nice to know....
Alfred W. 02-12-2009, 10:36 AM Well buy a gas powered Welder/ generator. you will need the welder and cheaper than power hook-up.

Alfred I really like that idea... I didn't know that they made them as a combo, I thought I would have to get them seperate. Got any suggestions on a good semi-cheap one??? Powerful enought to weld at least 1/4" metal???
Well, like i said earlier every weekend since the ice storm we have been working on chopping wood and cleaning up the land... Well today I got to take the jeep out to move some of the larger branches and trees that had been knocked down... Here are some pics...

Brentmckinsey 02-15-2009, 01:48 PM Nice build. I have to agree with with Wranglerboy on your wifee. check out Daveysjeeps.com. He is a Jeep salvage yard in Salem, OH. He is really reasonable and a nice guy. Glad to hear your ok after that ice storm. It's sad how much damage was done FEMA from what I have seen and read didn't show up and it didn't make the news really.

Stick welders only, no mig but if you practice you can weld anything with them Lincoln makes them so does miller. I'd search graigs list. !/4" ? Hell you can weld 2" with them, with the right rods.

Thanks for that website... I gave them a call and they have the bellhousing, shift fork, spring and ball.... I also asked them about an external clutch slave cylinder from an 80-82 CJ7 with a 4-cyl engine, didn't have that though... I'm also going to need a throw out bearing... Anyways, this town really jumped into high gear after the storm, working their butts off to get the power back on... The people north of us got hit alot harder than we did. As for FEMA, they showed up a couple days after it happened and are still set-up down at the college with all their trucks, trailers, and RVs....
minam44 02-18-2009, 07:54 AM I have been out of the Jeep section for a while... Looks like you have alot of work ahead of you..
You got yourself a good tow rig now. I've been towing my rig with my Tahoe with the same drive train you have, just put in a trailer brake and your good.:smokin:
Hope to see you out here again..:flipoff2:
DeezNutzOffRoad 03-01-2009, 06:01 PM So, I bought a bellhousing with the shift fork, ball and spring, and even got the rubber boot also... I'm just waiting on the guy to ship it out to me. So in the mean time we just had another winter storm come through the area, but this time it dropped about 5-6" of snow instead of ice... So, here is a little cheesy video clip of the jeep playing in the backyard...
YouTube - Jeep in the Snow 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI77jQ02IB0)
And yes I know I need a locker... I'm just surprised that the 4wheel drive still works...
Oh by the way, that noise you hear is the power steering pump and it started doing it after the body lift came down and the steering started to bind up...
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-06-2009, 08:15 PM So its been a while but here is a little bit of an update...
Been order parts when the cash comes around and got some bling-bling in today...

I'll get around to writing more later..
offroadjunkie 04-06-2009, 09:04 PM you will love that twin stick once you get some lockers.. if you want to get the most out of put a selectable locker in the rear. That way when you want to do a front dig your spool doesnt make it hard to do... just ask me how i know :homer:

Ok, How do you know?
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-19-2009, 09:36 PM Well I guess offroadjunkie didn't want to tell me how he knew...
Anyways, I havn't really been on here to give an update in awhile, so i'll go ahead and try to catch up anybody who still reads this thing.
I put the twinstick kit on a while ago and noticed that I don't have the speedo cable for the np205... I've been doing some searching but can't find anybody that sells the cable. I've also heard that someone makes an adapter to convert it from a mechanical signal to an electronic signal so i can keep my yj dash, but I can't find a company that actually has the parts. If anyone has done this or knows where to go, please I need all the help i can get.
Well, I got the driveshafts and the bellhouse/tranny/transmission removed this weekend. Now, I'm waiting on the new clutch, pressure plate, and pilot bushing to come in. I also need to find a external slave cylinder, throwout bearing, and of course speedo cable. So if any of yall got some parts laying around that u need to get rid of, just let me know.
DeezNutzOffRoad 08-02-2009, 07:26 PM I am right in the middle of swapping a Ford NP435 tranny into a 4.0L YJ. I got the tranny bolted up today and realized that I forgot to take care of mounting the CPS sensor. So after unbolting the tranny, dropping it back down, and unbolting the bellhousing I'm kinda stuck on how to mount it to the bellhousing. Now, I've already read through the BC4x4 and a bunch of other links. Is there anyone who has done this swap that could shed some light on the easiest way to mount this thing?
DeezNutzOffRoad 08-16-2009, 08:03 PM So, I think I figured out a way to mount this damn CPS sensor...
I saw some brackets at wal-mart one night, so I picked up a box of four for about $2.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3356/image029h.jpg
Drilled out the holes to make two slots.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/6256/image039mrv.jpg
Got the bellhousing out and got it ready to drill.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4355/image041u.jpg
Put a hole in it.... No turning back now...
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9638/image050s.jpg
Got the brackets rivited in and the sensor mounted...
http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4492/image056c.jpg
Let me know what yall think and if there is anything I shoulda done different...
jpfrk2001 08-17-2009, 04:13 PM They do sell CPS relocation kits. But since you already did what you did, report back and let us know if this idea of yours works.

Yeah, I looked into that... And I don't have an extra $250 sitting around right now... I hope this works, I tried mounting the bellhousing yesterday but the two hex/torx bolts on the top of the bellhousing were to short and only had about a tread or two sticking out. So, I'm going to try and make it to the hardware store this week and get some grade 8 bolts that are longer..... But i'll let yall know if it works or not...
Austin007 08-19-2009, 12:41 AM I don't see why it wont work. As long as it is right over the fly wheel and the gap is right there shouldn't be a problem.
jpfrk2001 08-19-2009, 04:18 PM I don't see why it wont work. As long as it is right over the fly wheel and the gap is right there shouldn't be a problem.
I was waiting for someone to say this. Here is the fix if you can, install CPS back in stock tranny and see if you can get a measurement some how. I don't know how because the flywheel is obviously bolted to the engine. Im sure you can figure it out. when you do, report back.
DeezNutzOffRoad 08-26-2009, 07:26 PM Ok so the bellhousing is bolted up now to the back of the engine along with my makeshift cps bracket. The sensor is right where it should be-over the flywheel. But now I've got another problem and could use some help. I wanted to try and turn over the engine to make sure the sensor would stay put, but now my starter won't turn over.
I took the starter off and took it up to o'reilly's and had it checked. They said it was good and doing everything its suppose to do. I'm getting power to the starter when its bolted up and when I jump the points on the solenoid it winds the gear inside. But when I try to turn the engine over with the key no-luck.
Thought some fuses might be blown, but all of them checked out good. Thought the battery might be low, but I tried jumping it off another truck and still no-luck. I'm probably missing something really stupid thats right in front of me, but I could use some help... Any suggestions anyone ???
rustybottoms88 08-31-2009, 07:08 AM Ok this is pretty much the exact same prob i had with my 82 chevy. It turned out the rod going from my key switch to the ignition switch was flexxing and not fully engaging the ignition switch so just got another rod and baboom she was purring again......i changed out everything before i finally figured that one out! MIght be your prob, might not? Good luck tho and glad to see your making progress!
PS let me know what fixes your starting prob

Ok, come to find out, that switch that attaches to the top of the housing on the transmission is not only for the reverse lights, but its also a neutral safety switch. So, I hooked it up and now the starter is trying to turn the engine over, but I'm not getting it to crank all the way over. This is a good thing kinda cuz, it means that the bellhousing, starter motor, and cps sensor all line up the way that its suppose to be.
I know I'm dealing with an electrical issue, I just don't know where its at... I'm getting fuel to the injectors, the starter is doing all that it can, but I'm not getting any power to the distributor/coils (sp?) or plug wires... Still no fuses are blown. I just spent the last 5 hrs trying to track it down with no luck....
rustybottom, I don't think I have a problem with rod that your taking about cuz the starter is trying now. I just don't understand why there is no power going spark plugs...
There has to be someone out there that can point me in some direction to get this thing running...
DeezNutzOffRoad 09-07-2009, 08:10 PM Rustybottom, I finally got the damn thing to run today... I checked everything I could possibly think of... It ended up being the cps sensor wasn't close enough to the flywheel. Everything I read about this swap said that sensor needed to be a dimes width away. Well that may of worked for them, but I had to get this thing almost touching the flywheel-about a paper's width away...
Anyways its running now, so now I got to pull it back out, put the clutch fork, ball and spring, mount the tranny and transfercase, rig up a crossmember to support it, and the list goes on and on....
What I am worried about is the speedo gear that goes into the np205... It uses a mechnical gear and the YJ dash uses an electrical one, right??? Well, if I could find some way to plug it, I would for now, but I have no idea who would make sometype of freeze plug that size.
If not, then does anyone know someway to convert the mech speedo gear to an electrical signal to plug into the yj dash??? I don't want to switch to the CJ style like alot of others are doing, I would like to keep it with the YJ dash.... Any suggestions???
jeepman1320 09-07-2009, 10:37 PM Which transfer case are you using? I converted my Scrambler to all electronic gauges, including the speedo. I am using a GM/Mopar speedo sensor, screwed right on. Ran the wires and bingo...

85cj7boy 09-08-2009, 09:51 AM Autometer makes digital senders. Not sure on what signal they send or what signal your guage wants but it may be an option.
Glad you got it started. I like your mount. I wish I could have done something like that. When I did my swap I couldn't find a flywheel from a renix era 4.0L and the signal is different when they went to OBD1.
I'll be watching this build. I like what you have done so far. Bodywork is great. I just used rustoleum (bad idea) takes forever to harden up and then just discolors.
Not sure if this will work for you but this is what I was thinking of. Says it will only work with autometer guages though.

I know some of the pics look bad, but they were all taken with a cheap ass nokia cell phone, cuz I got tired of carrying around the digital camera...
Well, time to build a crossmember to support all this freaking weight now and do the plumbing for the slave cylinder... Oh and by the way that 205 hangs down so freakin low that I'm goin to have to look into a clocking ring later...
DeezNutzOffRoad 09-15-2009, 07:19 PM Did some floor trimming today to tuck the tranny up as high as I could get it and it kinda sits about 1 1/2" to 2" higher than how the original one set...
Also put on the "bling-bling" for the picture...
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/7258/trannytop.jpg
And from the bottom with the skid plate bolted up a little bit...
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6879/trannybottom.jpg
DeezNutzOffRoad 09-20-2009, 06:34 PM Alright so I made a bracket up at work out of some 1/4" metal....
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9349/43411519.jpg
Put a piece of 1" rubber on the top of the bracket to help cushion it...
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2236/56382635.jpg
Then put the skid plate back on along with another piece of 1" rubber on the bottom...
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/3382/34846034.jpg
I also got a piece of 5/16" zinc alloy from ace hardware... Cut it and grinded it down to replace the slave cylinder push rod... I'll post a pic of it later this week... I've still gotta go and get the fitting to screw in the hydraulic line into the slave cylinder....
Also, I've got an idea for a rear drive shaft that ya'll probably won't like, but its only a temporary solution for now... But more on that later...
lockedupLJ 09-21-2009, 03:46 PM WOW, awesome work!!!!!! I really like what you're doing with it so far. I was born and rasied in Hot Springs, Ar, joined the NAVY in 2000 and decided to stick it out for the time being. Can't beat the money. :flipoff2: Anyways, get that heap finished up and meet us at the Superlift park sometime.
Oh. BTW, when you get ready for axles let me know, my old man owns a salvage yard in Hot Springs and has a few options.:D

Hey man thanks... Damn, I can't wait to get on the trails down there, but I'm still a long ways from having it ready. I'm actually getting ready to start looking for some axles, if I can get the old lady to let me swing it as a christmas present for myself... I've been looking at the junk yards up here, and thats pretty much all they have-junk.....Anything over 10 yrs old is damn near impossible to find up here... I've still got to finish up some loose ends before I can drop money on any axles.
I just got the hydraulic line ready for the slave cylinder today, so tomorrow its going to get mounted, master cylinder topped off, and line bled... I'm still looking for a speedogear for the transfercase. O'reilly's and Autozone said that can't even order it for me. Going to check out Napa and Advance Auto later. Plus I'm going to make a transmission hump cover and try and powder coat it up at work...
DeezNutzOffRoad 11-28-2009, 11:33 AM Alright, so its been a long time since my last update. Not much has been happening, but here are some pics of some loose ends that I've been working on...
Here is the push rod for the slave cylinder. I had to cut three of them cause the first two were to short and wouldn't engage the clutch all the way...
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/1444/image002tb.jpg
So then I started working on a top cover to go over the tranny...
After ALOT of trial and error, I finally got one that fits decent...
Now, I know its not all fancy and HARDCORE as some other guys, but its what I could do with my limited knowledge of fabricating and lack of fancy tools...
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9286/image005uo.jpg
Added some beer holders...
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/864/image007da.jpg
Took it up to work and sprayed some black textured powder coating on it...
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/460/image055o.jpg
ALMOST finished...
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/3449/image057g.jpg
Now I know your wondering what that is in the bottom right hand corner.
Well, I had the guys up at the factory laser etch a piece of 1/8" stainless steel...
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4931/image056dl.jpg
My dad keep joking around with me cause I was trying to throw all these different parts into the jeep to make it run and the eagle in the middle is the Navy eagle for the time I did in the Navy...
The picture doesn't really do it any justice (since it was taking with a cell phone.) It needs to be cleaned up and buffed out. But it does look alot better in person.
So here is pic of it on paper.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/5069/image029wf.jpg
The only other thing I've gotten done it I made a drive shaft, by cutting the old one in half and welding in a piece of 3" tubing that was laying around up at work. I know its not a slip-yoke like I need and its also not balanced, but I'm not out driving on the streets or trails yet. It just good enough to pull it out of the shop and get some of the fluids turning. Plus I plan on stretching the rear axles once I find some 1 tons, so it would of been pointless to pay for a built drive shaft right now.
Also, I'm trying to sell the old AX-15/NP231/BH to help fund a little bit of this project.
Here is the link to it: AX-15 Transmission NP231 transfercase combo (http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=839777)
DeezNutzOffRoad 12-27-2009, 06:30 PM So I got my christmas present in the other day.
Dana 60s off a 79 F250
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2077/p8200101.jpg
Didn't get much done today on them, but I'll try and keep this update as much as I can...
Cut off the spring perches and shock tabs on the rear and got the diff cover off to see what I had to deal with....
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3383/p8210003i.jpg
It didn't look real good....
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/9196/p8210004.jpg
As you can see, some of the teeth are broken off the spider gears.
Now, I'll be the first one to tell ya, that I have pretty much no clue what I'm doing now. I'm just trying to learn as I go along and read as much as possible.
The gears that are in the axles are 3.54 with no lockers.
So, I was wondering since I would like to go to bigger gears and lockers later on when the money becomes available, can I just go ahead and weld the piss out of it and make a lunchbox locker and run it till it breaks???
Also pulled the axles out of the rear and noticed some pretty bad pitting in the middle of the driver side shaft....
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4572/p8210006e.jpg
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/5600/p8210007.jpg
DeezNutzOffRoad 12-28-2009, 06:50 PM What no comments on the lincoln locker idea???
So, I guess everyone thinks the corrosion on the axle will be ok?
It sure would be nice to get some feedback....
plenty of people lincoln lock their 60s... go for it. When you get to dumping money you'll want to upgrade to 35 spline axles anyhow, so the spiders would get dumped regardless, even if you went with a lunch box locker.

Thanks Dook, I think thats going to be the way I go... I know it would be nice to build up both these axles right now before I put them on the jeep, but the money just isn't here right now to do that and I'm ready to get back in it and start driving...
DeezNutzOffRoad 12-29-2009, 07:26 PM Got a little bit done today.....
Took about 2 1/2hrs to get the drum brakes off. The driver's side was pretty loose and slid right off, but the passenger side was rusted on there pretty bad and was a PITA.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3096/image007pi.jpg
Anybody need some drum brakes???
And also finished grinding down what was left of the spring perches.
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/7732/image006nn.jpg
I also ordered a disk brake kit that should be coming in soon...
dgfordman 12-29-2009, 10:12 PM I would just weld it up. then if you need gears just get thick ring and pinions so you dont have to worry about finding a different carrier. Thats what i did on my 79' front 60. I didnt have the money for r&p and detroit so i welded it and put in thick gears. Then when i had money saved up for the detroit i bought a 4.10 and down one. As for the shaft find a couple of spares. If ya wheel hard like we do you'll need them. i got tired of breakin them and got a 70. great build keep it up.

Thanks man,
Got some done today, but not much... Knocked out the wheel studs and seperated the hubs from the drum. Still waiting on this disk kit to come in, but hopefully it will be in next week. Then took a wire wheel and started cleaning up the axle for a little while. I still got a lot more to do before I get it under the jeep, but its coming along. Sorry, but no pics this time.
jbugher 01-01-2010, 06:42 PM Looking good
jpfrk2001 01-02-2010, 02:41 AM Got your PM
For that tap you want, I cannot remember exactly what size it was. I do know its a metric tap. I just took the stock breather/bolt into a industrial fastener shop, and they matched it up to the tap. I want to say it was a M12 but I cannot say for sure. I am currently in Afcrackistan and all my shop tools are in storage along with my jeep! Your build has grown and looking good. keep it up.
phorunna 01-02-2010, 07:45 AM Hey build looks good keep it up.
Lincon lockers work great in the rear. Thats how I roll. Just a suggestion though. When you weld them up; cut eight small peices of flat bar to weld into each corner of the spiders(four on each side) This will make it bomb proof and keep the welds from breaking out.
DeezNutzOffRoad 01-02-2010, 08:39 PM Looking good
Are you lookin at the same Jeep I'm looking at????
Thanks though man...

That sucks that you're over there. Good luck, stay safe and get the fk out ASAP... I got out of the Navy in 08 and was lucky enough to not have to ship out.

I like the idea of throwin some metal in there to make it stronger. I've read of other guys on here putting nuts and bolts and forming a big ass weld, but I don't know if I'll go that far.
I'm going to try and get to the shop tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully I'll have and update later...
DeezNutzOffRoad 01-03-2010, 07:12 PM Not much of an update.
Its FKing cold around here!!!!
Got another 2hrs of wire brushing done and sprayed some piss can primer on it to help keep it from flash rusting over of me again.
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5176/p8280001.jpg
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/771/p8280002m.jpg
I also took a look at where the breather/distribution block is going to go.
If you look real close, you can see a speck on the left axle tube by the pumkin. Its a hole that goes all the way through.
I thought about putting the block there, but once I raise the pinion then that little hole won't be on top anymore.
Anybody think that it won't matter?
.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 03:05 PM Well, I'm going bring this back from the dead.
Its been a while since I've updated this, and I've been slowly working on the Jeep when I get a chance. Money has been tight, so its been hard to get anything acomplished.
So, the last time I wrote I was still waiting on the Disc Brake Conv Kit. Well, I got it in, but haven't installed it yet. I'm waiting to paint the axle before I put it on there.
So since Jan. I've been trying to buy parts as money gets saved up.
I was really stupid and bought some junk yard wheels. The plan was to buy some 16.5 wheels cut some beadlocks up at work, then get some 37" military tires for now to save up enough for some 42" pitbulls.
So here are the crappy junk yard wheels....
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1491/image0140x.jpg
Now, for the stupid part....
When I was planning all this (since this is my first time) I didn't take into account the back spacing, the dia of the hole for the hub, and the width of the wheel.
As you can tell the backspacing sucks on this thing...
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9826/image015yk.jpg
Besides the fact that my damn front hub sticks out a mile, I figured out that if I did beadlocks, I wouldn't have any room to get to get to the valve stem.
Also, the rear hub wouldn't even fit through the wheel. I know I could of grinded it out to make it work but that still wouldn't have fixed the back spacing.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/1002/image0090.jpg
SO, after figuring out that no one wants to buy damn junk yards wheel :homer:
I was stuck with the wheels and had to find a way to make them work.
The plan was to knock out the centers and cut some new centers up at work to weld in to fix most of these problems. Sorta like recentered H1s (by MAD MAC or 406 YJ)
Got out the grinder and air chisel.
Grind down the heads on the rivets holding the center in and the knocked them out with the air chisel.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9097/image006aq.jpg
Next, with the help of the engineer up at work, we designed some new centers to weld in. I know they look very similar to 406 YJ, but they're not exact. I liked the way his looked.
So, got a sheet of 3/8 grade 50 metal up at the factory and off to the lasers it went.
And here is what came out of it.
http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7623/image029he.jpg
6 Brand new wheel centers. I only needed 5 but 6 fit on the sheet of metal. So I had a spare.
If you look real close in the pic, you can see that the hole for the lug nuts is countersunk. The laser didn't do it. I had to buy a 1" countersink bit with a 60 degree head to get the angle for the lug nut.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 03:44 PM So once I got all the holes welded up on the wheel shell and made sure there wasn't any pin holes to leak air.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/6225/image015ar.jpg
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6153/image016q.jpg
I set up a jig to get these wheel centers welded in.
Here is how the first one came out.
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/1024/image026vs.jpg
Welded it front and back and had good penatration, I think it should be enough to hold it in there.
Oh and by the way, I'm using a Lincoln 175amp 220v welder running off a craftsman generator. :flipoff2:
Using .035 Flux Core
I'm no cert welder, but I think my welds are getting a little bit better.
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/2766/image028n.jpg
Still have 4 more to do and it takes a while to prep each wheel before I weld it.
So, back to the engineer to work on the beadlocks.
Here are the prints for what i've got in mind
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/584/pb260005.jpg
A close up on the top plate
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/2743/pb260006.jpg
Plan on cutting these out off 1/4". Still haven't gotten around to do it yet..
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 03:48 PM cool build:smokin:
Thanks man. This has been like a 2-3yr build so far.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 04:20 PM So When I made my run to junk yard to get those wheels, I also looked for some leaf springs. After doing a ton of searching on here, I went and tried to find some waggy springs. Well, no one around here had any. Next was some dakota springs. Found some, but to me they looked kinda weak. So, after reading about F150 springs on here, I decided to go with that. While at the junk yard I grab some springs off a 95 F150 and I had no idea what I was getting into.
The ones I got were rusty as hell but wasn't bent and looked to be salvagable (sp?). So, I took one apart and wire bushed it so I could take it up to work and powder coat it.
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/398/image007je.jpg
I know that ain't the leaf spring in the back ground. Its a tread plate...
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/6710/image014xe.jpg
Before and after...
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6299/image016d.jpg
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6039/image019wc.jpg
While trying to rebuild these springs, I couldn't find a center bolt - the damn ford stealership told me they could only sell the whole leaf spring, and all the parts stores around here didn't have anything that would work. I ended up taking a grade 8 bolt and grinding it down to fit.
Next was the bushings.
I didn't know till after I got into this that the eye's on the main leaf are two different sizes. I was able to buy one of the bushings at Napa, as for the other side, no one in town had it and couldn't get it. So got ahold of Energy Suspensions told them what I had and they sent some two-part bushings. Only thing was they weren't the right size:mad3:.... So out came the cut-off wheel and made them fit.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 04:45 PM So, some of the parts I needed to do that rear end swap:
-Spring Perchs
-U-Bolts
-Top Plates
-Way Back Shackle Hangers
-Shock Mounts
-and a bunch of other crap..
So my plan was to get a piece of 1/4" drop at work and make my own parts.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/4307/image006um.jpg
Well, it sounded good in theory. I used the Weiderman (a big-ass hole punch for metal) up at work to punch the holes for the top of the spring perch and top plates. I then tried to use a cut off wheel to cut through that 1/4" metal. Well, 2 discs later I finally got one piece cut out and it looked like crap, I realized this wasn't going to work....:homer:
So, back to the engineer...
A couple of days later and about 10 mins on the laser.
Out came a box of goodies!!!!!:D
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/2936/image003sl.jpg
Well, alot went wrong with this. :mad3:
The top plates were wrong and the holes didn't line up. So a call to Ballistic and got the right ones, along with U-Bolts. The parts that were suppose to be way-back hangers were too small. Then a call to Ruff Stuff to get their kit.
But the spring perches should work along with the shock mounts.
Here is a crappy cell phone pic of the spring perch welded up.
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/6258/image007aa.jpg
So now, I'm waiting on Ruff Stuff to send out their way-back shackle hanger and anti-wrap kit.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 05:15 PM I've been working on these damn wheels for the past three months and it doesn't feel like I've accomplished much.
So, I needed to do a small project that i could finish quick to get my mind off of those wheels.
Well, I decided to make a stand for my Dad's bench grinder. I figured it was the least I could do since he is letting me use his shop to work on the Jeep.
Here's the plan.
Get some material up at work, use the drum brake off of the dana 60, and make a stand. I know its a genius plan. So here's how it went.
Picked up some drop metal:
-2 pieces of 1/4" grade 80
-1 Three ft tube, 1.5" od x 1/4" wall
-Some bolts from Ace Hardware
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3719/image023fk.jpg
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9864/image032on.jpg
Started off with the drum, grinded it down and made sure everything was level. Next came the bottom base plate getting tacked on along with the tubing. Making sure it stayed level.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/549/image033j.jpg
Then added on the top plate and welded on the bolts to hold the grinder.
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/7623/image035c.jpg
After checking to make sure it wasn't going to fall over on me, I did a full burn to really get it on there.
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/5021/image037ry.jpg
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/2982/image038u.jpg
If any of yall expert welders out there care to comment, let me know what to do different.
So here is the final product:
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/8906/image036q.jpg
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/7646/image040i.jpg
I know this had nothing to do with the Jeep build, I just thought I would share with yall....:flipoff2:
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-03-2010, 05:24 PM Last weekend there was a tractor show down the road from me and they were doing a drawing to give away a tractor designed by Chip Foose in July.
Here's a couple of pics:

Really doubt if I'll win, but it was nice to look at...:smokin:
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-05-2010, 04:24 PM So some parts came in from Ruff Stuff today. Now that is some fast shipping.... Northern Cali to Arkansas in two days.... I'll try and get some pics up on here later this week...
makitupthehardway 04-07-2010, 02:16 PM Great build man. Keep up the good work.
Do Work 93 YJ 04-08-2010, 11:33 AM Glad to see your back at it. Like how your designing alot alot of your parts. Also I think the beadlocks will look killer the design looks kinda like the ones Tim C. had built for Jenny Craig.
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-08-2010, 08:26 PM Thanks yall,
DW93YJ, as far as the whole designing my own parts, I'm more or less copying off of others. But I didn't know that someone else had "Mudflap Girl" Beadlocks. I tried looking for it on here but couldn't find anything on here. Do you have a link or any pics of them???
So here's a small update: Since I'm working out of my dad's shop and it is all the way across town, It's hard to get time to get over there and get anything done. And when I do get over there I only have about 2 hrs after work to do something. So regardless to say, it's going slow right now.
Well, like I said earlier this week, Ruff Stuff really came through and quick too.
Here's what they sent:
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9053/image015mi.jpg
From the left:
Traction Bar Brackets for the axle
Then the Way Back Shackle Hanger
Then on the right, some parts for another project for the jeep.
I needed to build a small crossmember to attach the traction bar to, since I didn't want to connect it to the factory crossmember. I'll show more on that later once I get the material for it.
Well I did get the hangers welded up this week.
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/9173/image042t.jpg
And I only got one side welded on the Jeep tonight. Maybe I can get the other side welded on saturday...
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/3686/image043fs.jpg
So now, for another random pic that has nothing to do with the Jeep Project...
We got NEW paint guns up at work and I just have to show them off....(even though I liked the older guns better)
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3752/image006m.jpg
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/4276/image018vy.jpg
Look at all the pretty lights.....
And the pimped out zip-tied shelfs I made...:smokin:
DeezNutzOffRoad 04-10-2010, 08:18 PM Didn't get much done...
But took some pics...

DeezNutzOffRoad 06-05-2010, 07:37 PM So i finally got the plates cut out for the beadlocks and YES I know that the bottom plates have bigger holes than the top plates.
I had to have the bottom plates recut to match the top. Plus I got a box full of goodies!!!
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/743/imge032.jpg
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7227/imge033.jpg
Here is the first wheel after welding the plate on, and Damn that took forever..
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7629/image040pt.jpg
Grinded down the welds
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5639/image041f.jpg
Well, I wanted to run the wheels through the powder booth and paint them, but the owner of the factory is throwing a fit and complaining and Government (personal) projects getting painted.
So I decided to go with Duplicolor Truck Bedliner Coating.
Not as good as powder coating but it will work I guess.

Oh yeah and I got the spring perches welded on today, but didn't take any pics
.
DeezNutzOffRoad 06-22-2010, 08:22 PM So here's some of the stuff I was able to get done over Father's Day Weekend...
Finshed up the other 4 wheels
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/1026/p1230057.jpg
Checked the new valve stems out
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7163/p1230055.jpg
Here's a pic of the last two wheels after a morning of welding...
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3568/image044j.jpg
Also, my wife got me a little pot blaster for my Birthday. I was getting tired of wire brushing.
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/3961/image045hx.jpg
DeezNutzOffRoad 06-22-2010, 08:42 PM I also got the cross member done for the traction bar.
Here's the mounts that got welded to the frame.
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/56/p2110065.jpg
This is the basic idea behind it.
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8688/p2110067.jpg
After some more cuts.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5972/p2120068.jpg
Checkin it under the jeep
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/3114/p2120071.jpg
Finshed up welding it and cut some end caps for the open tube to clean it up
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/7185/p2120074.jpg
Added the piece that will hold the shackle for the traction bar
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/8300/p2120076.jpg
Then off to the paint booth!!!!!
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/7189/image051xy.jpg
And throw in a couple more parts, while we're at it!
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7439/image033x.jpg
Final Product....

Its not that at all. Your doing great. Your build is starting to move into the relm of custom Fabbin and burning metal to make things work. Going a bit beyond Newbie level. But thats all good:D
Keep at it. don't stop.

Thanks, martin. I had to steal some ideas off your build but don't worry I'm not done yet, I've still got the front axle to get around to!!!!:D
You still overseas? If so, stay safe man.... and that sucks you lost Gen McCrystal today, Obama is a douche bag anyways...
crashnzuk 06-23-2010, 06:09 PM If my eyes don't decieve me, those look to be 16.5" wheels. How do you plan to keep the inner bead on with low-ish pressure?
Travis..

Travis, ur right.... those are some stock junk yard 16.5" wheels.... If I start poppin the bead alot, then I'll give 406 YJ call
crashnzuk 06-23-2010, 07:54 PM I don't think you'll be able to keep that inner bead on at anything that you would consider low pressure. I also don't think that the outer bead is going to like being pressed flat against that flange. I hate to say, but I think all of that work will be for nada.
Travis..
csutton7 06-23-2010, 07:55 PM nice job on the build---I have the same issue as you with the 205 speedo gear--did you ever figure that out?? if so what did you come up with and if not if I get it figured out I'll let you know--I know at one time I had a site that did speedo gears, but I'm not sure I bookmarked it, but I needed to call them to see if their parts would work---anyway keep at it---chris

Thanks man, I still havn't done anything about that big hole in the back of the tcase yet. The jeep isn't moving for a while till I get these axles done, so it's towards the bottom of the to-do list.
I've thought about getting this:
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/PIO0/CA3032.oap?year=1976&make=Ford&model=F-150&vi=1120723&keyword=speedometer+cable
I know it won't hook up to the speedometer, but the jeep isn't going to be on the street. I just don't want to keep leaking gear oil out that hole....
When I figure something out I'll let you know...
csutton7 06-23-2010, 09:09 PM i went thru my bookmarks and found the site I was talking about and here it is--I do want to call them though first to make sure--chris

I remember calling them last year and they said something about needing a "Hall Effect Sensor" and that they didn't sell them. Now, things could of changed by then, but let me know how it goes...
Lookin good man.
thanks man
DeezNutzOffRoad 08-25-2010, 06:51 PM All right I know all of yall have been waiting anxiously for the past 2 months for me to update this tread. Well, I've been busy having to take care of other stuff. But enough about personal business and onto the Jeep.
So the last pics I posted had me painting the crossmember.
Well, here is the finish product.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/8273/image008sm.jpg
I also switched over the rear shackles over to some boomerang shackles. I wished I had made them a little shorter, but I guess I'll use these for now.
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/7894/image010sd.jpg
I got some of the 37x12.50 hummer tires off ebay.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/5549/image029tz.jpg
Mounted a tire on the rim and aired it up to make sure my welds would hold the air. And I just had to throw one of those freshly powdercoated beadlock plates on top it and take a pic.
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1190/image031u.jpg
Yes I know I need more bolts, I just grabbed some laying around to take the pic
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4287/image032dy.jpg
How the rear should sit...
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7016/image014u.jpg
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7018/image015kn.jpg
So for the past couple of days I've been working on the traction bar. This is a early pic. I'm goin to the shop tomorrow after work, so I'll take a better pic after I get it cleaned up. Then it's off to the paint booth on friday.
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1184/image034b.jpg
I know its not much of an update, but its what I got for now. As always keep the comments coming.. It helps keep me a little motivated... and I'll try to keep this updated more often...

skeeterbeater 08-25-2010, 10:09 PM sweet jeep, on the power in the garage i'd find an electician that wants to do a side job for cash. you'll have power and he will have tax free beer money. win win.
LucasFury 08-26-2010, 03:12 AM How are you gonna do the frame end of your ladder bar?
Jeep looks good overall. It's silly how small this setup makes 37's look. ..And I'm gonna be rolling on 33's for a month or two, haha.

I've looked into it last year man. It was going to be around $800 in materials alone.

The traction bar attaches to the crossmember I just built. I'll get a better pic tonight. It would look better if I could get some 44's....:smokin:
deanschool 10-26-2010, 07:17 PM hey man, your jeep is looking good! cant wait to see this thing done! i couldnt stand to not drive my jeep for that long but itll all pay off in the end! good ideas in this build that i think i might steal and re use! :D keep the work coming! your motivating me too!
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-26-2010, 07:32 PM Alright yall, so I've been slowing workin on the jeep. I haven't been taking alot of pics but here's what I got.
Here's the pic for the guy that wanted to know how the traction bar attaches to the frame.... It connects to some baby shackles on the crossmember I built.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/686/image036f.jpg

----and yes, I know thats a cheap-ass harbor freight helmet on top----
Here's the shock hoops out of some spare tubing left over...
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9341/image004copy.jpg
And then ran the brake lines for the rear
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8163/image003bc.jpg
Finally welded the spider gears for the rear....
Not perfect, but I threw in some 1/4" plate to beef it up...
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/424/image005xd.jpg
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9956/image006dh.jpg
There's some small loose ends to tie up, but all that's really left is clean it up, paint it, and bolt it all back together....
deanschool 10-26-2010, 07:38 PM what are you doing on here??? BOLT IT TOGETHER MAN! lol
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-26-2010, 07:40 PM LOL.... I know man, the shop is on the other side of town, so its hard to get time to get over there....
deanschool 10-26-2010, 07:42 PM i know its hard to admit, but we can all use our CHEVROL-egs lol that sucks! cant wait to see this thing going!
Moore87 10-27-2010, 11:23 AM Aren't those boomerang shackles on backwards?
brokejeep 10-27-2010, 12:53 PM Nice Y.J.I couldn't tell from your pics if you had welded the tubes to the housing, and I didn't read it in your posts.I have a similar set up on my Y.J.s rear axle and I ended up spinning(slightly) the tubes because I had neglected to weld them. The wrap bar puts a huge amount of force on the applied side of the axle. Not a total loss,it could have been much, much worse.Anyway something to think about.
Had I not noticed it ,I may have ruined an axle that I have $$ in.

DeezNutzOffRoad 10-28-2010, 06:23 PM Aren't those boomerang shackles on backwards?
They may be, I don't know. But everything I read said that the angles are suppose to be facing inward. > <
I'd like to get some smaller shackles later on, but these will have to work for now. My only other option is to use the lift shackles that used to be on the jeep. But it would look like this...

Thanks man for the heads up. I haven't even thought about welding the tubes to the pumpkin. I've heard of guys twisting their axle tubes, but didn't think I would have anything to worry about with the stock I6 in there.
So you got any tips on welding the tubes???

No,mines sitting on a bench waiting for me to decide what to do for a truss.I had one all planned out and half built and I read a post by LANCE directed at another guys truss build stating that it was a poor design. So,I rethink my whole approach, knowing that whatever I build can only be done once, and it must be structurally sound enough for the next stage of my build. In other words,my Jeep is still on jack stands in front of my house, and I haven't researched the correct way to do the welding.:(
DeezNutzOffRoad 10-29-2010, 04:22 AM damn, I sure was hoping it was going to be an easy thing to do. I figured I could just weld the tube to the pumkin with out having to build a truss...
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/8269/62293254.jpg
matts88yj 10-29-2010, 04:39 AM You don't have to build a truss if you don't want to but it does increase the overall strength of the axle when done properly. I believe the post brokejeep is referring to was a build where the truss ended two inches before the end of the axle tubes. Granted I'm sure that would be just fine for our use but he stated that the axle tube will then want to bend right in that two inch section of axle tube since the truss was not running along the entire axle tube.
I could be wrong if that is not the right post but I would say truss it. If you are going to have it apart, do it right. Another few days of building now could buy you a few more years out of your axles.
Nice build man. Doing the same type of build on my old cj7 (looking for axles now).
Once you get it out on the trail be sure to give some feedback on how everything works.
Keep up the work its motivation.

I hear you there man. I have three girl's under three. It takes ten times longer to build a rig than it did before having a family and responsibility. Its hard to convince the wife you need some new 37's and the kids clothes fit just fine oh and they dont need food:D Na but I wouldnt trade them for anything.
Maybe a KOH buggy:p
muddymobile 11-07-2010, 06:40 PM This jeep is sick. I think I may use your build to start mine I have a 92 rolling chassi with a donor pickup for power and drivtrain(97 chevy 2500)
You did some great work :grinpimp:
jpfrk2001 11-07-2010, 11:09 PM Hey, Awsome updates. I finally got an internet connection where I can see your pics. Cycle your rear suspension with that tracbar connected in place to ensure the proper rotation. I may be Completely redoing my rear suspension system because my axle rotates forward during droop. And this caused my trackbar to do some crazy stuff. Needless to say, I had to drop my tracbar project because of it. It had to do with the type of Rear springs I used. But I bet you'll be fine.
Looks good.
Grendel 11-08-2010, 05:08 AM Do you still need a Ford 205 speedo sending unit? I have an electric Auto Meter sending untit kicking around you can have. PM me your address and I'll get it out to you.
It's this one:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-5292/
If you get around to re-gearing, I have a repaired (bearing spun on it) Detroit (4.10 and numerically lower) with a 4.56 thick gear set that could go in your front. Nada for the rear though. I'd need some cash for that, though.
If anything, I'd find a 14B from a CUCV... it will be 4.56 gears, locked and cheap with axleshafts that will last. The crap that you've done to that 60 will cross over.
Edit to add: How about a list of parts you need to finish this build?

Thanks man, the wifey is wanting to get out of this apartment and move back across town into a house... (closer to the shop:smokin:)
So maybe it will give me some more time to get something done on the jeep...
Just my .02 if you start a build. DON'T waste your time and money doing the body work (tube fenders, rock sliders, comp corners) unless you got the money to spend. I could of had well over $1,500 to spend on the drive train if I had skipped all that.

Thanks man, I appreciate the heads up. I remember reading that you had problems with you trackbar and thought it might have something to do with you having 2 heim joints on the crossmember end. I'll check it again this weekend just to make sure. I'm also glad to see that you changed your mind on selling your jeep....
