: Timing chain cover leak.

I have a couple of questions.

My F motor has developed a serious leak at the timing cover. To replace this do I need any special tools to remove the harmonic balancer? I have one for a chevy, I am just wondering if its any different.

Do I need to pull the oil pan to change the seals?

Should I replace the timing chain while I have it apart?

Thank

Steve

This is a 2F in a TLC? Those were a direct copy of the ancient Chevy 239 I-6. You should be able to get the balancer off easily with that puller (just metric bolts). Timing chain is most likely the CAUSE of your oil leak; they'll get loose and chew through the cover. Chevy's are notorious for this. On a 22R the guides are cheap plastic, and when they break the chain goes loose and chews into the water pump cavity.

edit: yeah, you'll need to pull the pan to get the gaskets right. I've seen people try to get away without doing that, but it usually leaks.

No chain boys, it's a gear drive.
