: Setting up DOT Lights on the FToy

Since my FToy is registered for the road and I plan on taking it on trails that don't allow green sticker vehicles. I need to wire in DOT approved lights. I found some good headlights, turn signals, reverse lights, and tail lights. I'm going to use some off road light relays for the head lights and a 3 way toggle switch. The brake lights and reverse lights will be run on the stock switches. What I need help with are the blinkers. How will that have to be wired in?

You could use something like these. They are bulky and ugly, and don't self cancel, but they work with a single element brake light/turn signal light.

Since you're probably not concerned about them self-canceling, you could just set up the turn signals with a toggle (DPDT) going through a flasher module to the light bulbs. It would be cheap and functional.

Found this with about 45 seconds of searching on Google. Hope this answers your question. Personally I would use one 3 way switch mounted horizontally where moving to the right would enable right turn signals and moving to the left would...........

If you want indicators on your dash just run the wire parallel to small bulbs on the dash between the switch and the signal lamps.

Post pics of the rig with dot lights. Curious.

This is a simple system that can work with the toggle switch IF you run separate lights for your brake lights and turn signals. Really depends what you want to do about the lights on the rear. It may be easier wiring wise to run separate brake lights and turn signals, but it might get crowded back there with two lights per side.

How about the little ~2" truck marker lights? Plenty of room for a pair of them on each side. Not super bright...but probably bright enough to not get pulled over?

How about wiring your tail lights using trailer lighting convention--and even a plug near the grille. Then you could unplug from your dash harness and plug into a tow vehicle to flat tow!!

A buddy of mine had the tiny ~.5" LED's on the back of his buggy, and the county sheriff in Tonopah, NV didn't see them and didn't think he had lights!

I think that there are some details in the law about how many square inches of illuminated area are required. I doubt that a cop would bust out a tape measure but you never know on something like an F-Toy that obviously doesn't look street legal in CA.

I didn't bother searching with Google because I wanted to see specifically what the FToy community was doing.

I'm probably going with the horizontal toggle switch and individual lights for the blinkers and stop lights. I'll wire it like the schematic mtbrjon posted.

Thanks,
Pics will be up as soon as I'm done.

I used 2 amber marker lights and 2 red marker lights from a 2007 Chevy Dually. They were the ones on the fenders. I used the reds in the rear and ambers in front. I used a 3 position toggle and ran the right side to the right lights and left to the lefts. I bought 2- two connection flashers and ran them inline for each side. I just hold the switch in the direction I'm turning and they flash. It might have been easier to use a toggle that stayed in the selected position, but I hate driving around with the turn signals on all day and not realizing it. I didn't put any indicator lights on the dash. This passed the COLO state vin inspection that I did a few weeks back. Plus they are small. I will try to post a picture of them later.

Using a single flasher like the schemaic shows would take up less space. Guess I should have did a search on turn signals before I wired mine in. Always wondered how OEM's made use of one flasher for both sides and hazards. Good to know.
