: Arb/ gear oil problems
toyotanuts 10-20-2008, 11:58 AM with are pinion angle so high because of the motor moved back 8" we were having problems with the pinion bearing making noise and going out. So we added a higher fill plug and more gear oil. The gear oil level is about 2" above the stock fill hole.
The problem we are having now is gear oil getting in the arb line and venting out the silinoid. We clean the housing real good and replace the o-rings with a little oil on them. And the first trail ride it's doing it again. Is it because of the extra gear oil??? Or is it something we are not seeing. When we bench test it we see nothing wrong before or after the problem, just replace the o-rings to feel better.
MT4Runner 10-20-2008, 01:24 PM That happened to a buddy of mine who has a custom hpD44 rearend and ARB's.
At first, he thought it was air leakage. It turned out it was simply the HP housing, rotated up (CV driveline) and he'd used the stock vent in the axle tube. When the diff heated up, the air in the diff would pressurize the oil which puked right out the tube.
Is your breather at the highest point on your diff?
Sorry....I just reread your post. It's coming up your blue line. No nicks in the copper line? Is this only happening when the ARB is disengaged, or unlocking, or is the oil overcoming the ARB pressure??
It shouldn't be coming up the blue line...but I'd still suspect your diff breather not venting air pressure when the diff/oil heats up.
Brian Ellinger 10-20-2008, 02:03 PM Id bet the same, plugged breather on the axle.
toyotanuts 10-20-2008, 06:52 PM we have one of those expandable style so we won't spill anything. but you all are right, when we put it one we press it down. After wheelin a while it's pushed up but not real tight or anything. Maybe we will try a open hose while not competing and see what happens.
thanks
I'm still not convinced on those breathers. I just run the old long hose and coil it up on the chassis. You shouldn't press it down when installing it, the bellows need to be able to retract or expand depending on the temps.
Brian Ellinger 10-20-2008, 07:42 PM Thought about this again. We've been running plugs in our axles all season. So everything after the jambo has been no breathers. We're only ARB rear, but no issues with oil up the hose, that I know of.
MT4Runner 10-20-2008, 07:59 PM Maybe Toyotanuts' diff is heating up more than yours, Brian?? Toyotanuts, are your gears set up real tight, or minimal preload, causing more heat and more expansion??

Axle seals leaking?
Brian Ellinger 10-20-2008, 10:04 PM Axle seals leaking?
nope, all is dry. Recently peeked in, doing other things.
mtbrjon 10-21-2008, 04:03 AM Jeremy is this on the same axle you told me you had some r&p "issues" with? If so maybe it is a heat issue with your axle.

no, the high pinion front on the f-toy is the one we tore up. We did tear the rear out early this spring but that was when we went arb.

Axle housing not bent or anything?
toyotanuts 10-24-2008, 05:10 AM Axle housing not bent or anything?
getting ready to check that. The part I don't understand is that I can put air on it and let it sit overnight and it doesn't leak down and I spin it a few times while it's sitting.
How much gear oil do you all put in your rear axle?

just seen your question.
the oil spits comes out the siliniod when you disengage the locker.
no, no nicks in the copper
thanks
my pinion is probably cranked higher than yours in the back of my rig, I haven't had an issue with bearings yet, but it has been apart to re and re the gears and the bearings were all good. I'm running extra fluid to and haven't had an issue with the ARB. Only difference I'm guessing is the housings and that I run a hose of a breather vs the accordian. I'd try and ditch the accordian thing and see what happens. Only downside is the ARB rings may already be slightly damaged allowing it to leak still.

ok, soon as I check the housing and get it back together i'l try that.
thanks
