: Buddy just bought a Scout II

So my cousins fiance just bougth a 76 Scout II cause he likes the way they look. I took a look at it and it is actually in great condition but one huge problem. I go to climb in the back and realize that the rig didn't even move when I got in it. So I start jumping up and down and even my 200lbs was not enough to make the back end move. He said he took it on a dirt rode today and almost lost his spleen. The guy he bought the rig from said it had a 3" spring lift and I saw that it is runnin skyjacker shocks so I am guessing that is where the lift came from too. It has brand new 33x12.50 BFG Mud-Terains on it and they are rubbing the fenders so he wants to downsize to a 32 or 31. I told him just to spring over it and then he could get the tire to fit but hhe wants to leave it pretty stock for now. My question is how do you get a smoother ride out of this thing?? Best aftermarket springs or even some springs we could swap off another rig. I don't know much about Scouts but I told him I would try to get some good info so I can get him started in the right direction. I'll try to get some pics of his rig tomarrow.

I bet it's the POS shocks.

Tell the newbie scout owner to go here and read it all!

If the springs are that stiff they aren't Skyjackers. Skyjackers are soft springs and the best in my opinion. Superlifts and triangles are stiff riding springs.

Make sure the shocks are not to long, even trailmaster move some.....

Sounds to me like something is wrong.

Like others said, all spring move *some*, even my 1-ton truck bounces if I jump on it.

Check the shocks, also check the spring bolts/shackles. the PO may have cranked the sh*t out of them so they don't move.

If you don't know, they should be *snug* but loose.... if that makes any sence.

I may also have super-stiff add-a-leaves.... that would make is feal like a buck-board....

were in MT?

ask Tom to check it out....

If you are in Mont., bring it to Great Falls this saterday. We can take a look at it there and check out the suspension on it. You can also race it if you are interested.

Sadly, I won't be in GF for the mud bog.. we had prior plans to be in Havre this weekend.. so I'll be buzzing through GF Friday night.. probably in a little Turbo Laser. :D

They're having a sled pull at the Fairgrounds down here on Saturday the 24th, and then again on Sunday the 25th in Bozeman, if you're interested..

We're going wheelin' on the 24th near Bernice, up to Leadville (South of Boulder).. but I'm *hoping* we're back in time to go hook up to the sled here in town. :D

That's assuming I actually get a hitch and install it..

Thanks for all the replies. I just briefly looked at it but next time I will check the shakle mounts. Also the previous owner had the whole underside lined with some Line-X crap and it is all over the springs so that might add to the problem. I didn't count the number of leafs but on a guess I would say there were around 6-8 springs per leaf. Seams like alot to me. Didn't notice an add-a-leaf.

We are in Bozeman MT and he got the rig in Colubus MT. Chad I would buy yours if I had the money cause I think it is a sweet deal. He gave $3400 for his but the exterior is mint with NO rust and fresh paint. The engine seams a little rough and it looks like he has some oil leaks to fix. I think it was one of those he wanted one and this one he could get now. As for GF I might have to head up there Saturday since I have no plans as of yet. I think he has plans so cant get his rig up there. Give me some info and I will see if I can make it.

Once again thanks for the help.

Cool. I visit Bozeman periodically. :-)

He didn't buy the Scout from Mark Patterson, did he?

Do you know anything about the sled-pulls going on in Bozeman on Sunday the 25th? If I can get a hitch on my race truck I might have to come down and give it a try..

Anyone have some decent/quick/easy plans for a pullin' hitch? :D or at least a good attachment point for the sled..

Hafta get some snubbers in the rear suspension and hope I can get away w/o building the wrap-bar before hand..

I'll also be back down in September, 'round the 20-21-22, I think. More goins-ons at the new Motorsports Park at the Fairgrounds.

Plus I just have a bunch of good friends that are Mountaineers. :D

The race is at the fairgrounds on the northwest side of town. Check in is from 9:00 to 11:00. If you are a little late ask for me and we'll get you checked in any way. Racing starts at 1:00. The classes are 4cyl., 6cyl., 8cyl stock. comp mod, and X class. Entry is $25.00 and the payback is 70 % of the entry fees.
Tom try and get some info on the sled pull that sounds like something that would ge good at the Labor Day rally in Cascade in the future.

Brand new triangles and too-short RS5000's don't move fer nothing. Hop up and down until my roomie thought I would break his bumper. I suspect too short shocks and triangles (maybe with addaleaf???)

I don't know who he bought the rig from but it is blue and has a funky hom-made rollbar. I'll have to see about the mud bogs. They are fun but the one they had down here blew ass but that was mainly because my buddies didn't enter their trucks and they have the best trucks in town. They were boycotting it for reasons of their own. And I don't have a rig I could enter unless you want to spend 10 hours washing my 2000 F250 afterwerds so I can still try to sell it. And I didn't hear anything about the sled pull. That is more my trucks style but hopefully it will be sold by then and I will be crusing in a mud/trail/street rig. And give me a hollar when you are in town. # is 581-0411.

$3400!!!!
It seems like people looking for Scouts want the "PERFECT" 100% rust free body, and dont care about the running gear!

Maybe I should just put an add in the paper for a new engine/tranny and sell it that way

Not to be a complete ass, but..

"Best trucks in town" but "boycotting"?

Are you sure they weren't just talking big, but when it came time to put up or shut up, they had "personal differences"?

I swear I would've won Top Truck Challenge this year, but I didn't bother entering because I didn't want to go to Kalifornia.

Abba and JR were just lucky I wasn't there..

Best thing about the Bozeman mud-bog is watching all of the poser rigs make it 5' into the pit and die. :D

I ran the mud-bog last year.. 3 hours, $60 at the car-wash, plus a new starter later...

If I get my race truck ready for the pulls and opt to head down, I'll try n' remember to give you a jingle.

I keep meaning to go wheelin' with the Bozeman crew again, but haven't brought my trail rig down since we ran up Hyalite in '99..

Any of your friends go to Divide Ride in Ennis?

ChadH-Yeah you might just want to do that. I would prefer you truck over the one that they bought but no matter what I said they still got this one. I guess chalk one up to the uneducated.

tsm1mt-As for the best trucks in town. Well one of them just got done building a blown 454 and threw it under his chevy pickup with a dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear both locked and a brand new set of 38" swampers. The other had pretty much the same just not a blown 454 but he did have 44's. I didn't got to the bogs since I was already planning on heading to the air show in Helena but my other friend who went said that it was a pretty sad showing. Just a bunch of Jeeps with 33's trynig to push there way through the mud. As for why they didn't compete it was something about advertising issuse and different shops in town. I don't know anybody who went to Ennis and don't know anybody in the clubs just because they have some rules for getting in that I could never achieve while I was in school and I still haven't gotten a trail rig running since I graduated but once I get one running I'll have to check them out. Oh and I guess you can just was my truck and detail it after I get done with the bog. You even get the fun task of taking the 3 radiators out and washing them to get the mud out of the finns. Like I said I think I will pass on sending my truck through the bog. And deffinetly give me a call if you come down to the pull. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
