Hey guys. I'm looking into buying a 96 4runner with a blown up rear end. I'm told that is has a 4.10 rear end with an e-locker but I'm not sure if it's an 8" or an 8.4". Can someone fill me in?

Also, if it's an 8", can I swap an earlier 8" 3rd in it or do I have to run a newer third? A little more help.

I've swapped plenty of 8" toyota 3rds on older 4runners/pickups but never a newer rig. Any challenges I should be aware of?

Thanks

Paging Erik...

The TRD is an 8.

Loren why in the hell are you even asking these questions? You have to run the 8.4 into the 8.4 and the 8 with the 8. The bolt patterns are a butt hair different. The 8.4 has a much larger bulge on the housing in comparison to the 8 inch and if you rip it apart you will see some other noticable differences in the 3rd. Give me a call when you get a chance. When are you comming out to the West Coast?

The mounting studs for the 8.4 are much larger than the e-locker third studs.

No you can't put in anything but another e-locker equipped 3rd as it sits now.

If you really didn't want the e-locker rear the easiest thing to do would probably be to get another complete axle from another 96 - 2002 4Runner that didn't have the e-locker. That axle would have the standard 8 inch 3rd.

The only difficulty you might have in taking out the current 3rd would be that you have to lock the diff to take it out. Other than that not much of a difference.

If you really wanted to spend time on it you could weld up where the housing is notched and run some studs so you can run the standard 8inch 3rd. I think that would be the half ass way to go. Personally I would spend the money on another elocker. I think Shane or Ace might have a elocker 3rd laying around.

for the most part in our runners if it came with the e locker it will have 4.3's double check before you get a new axle.

if you take off the actuator you can slide over the rack with a screwdriver to lock it or unlock it...

Sorry for the stupid question guys.. I know my pre-95 toyota stuff pretty good but I wasn't sure about this question.

I was stupid not to remember about the notched housing in e-locker thirds.

Here is a new question.... Who has a 4.10 e-locker third? You, your friend, your friend's friend? Hook me up!

Thanks :D
