Ok boys.. here's a poll.. do ya use oil coolers in addition to your regular cooling system?

I am not sure if you seen it, but if you go a few days back there was a post about the same thing. lots of people chimed in.
If you seen it, then just ignore me.

But to answer your question (couldnt find my place on the pole) I have one and it didnt do a damn thing for me.

I'm in the same boat as you. I installed one as part of my buildup, and I really don't think it's making much of a difference.

For where I wheel an oil cooler is a must. I have 450 plus hp SBC that generates lots of heat.

I think an interesting poll would be to see who runs oil acculators. I think they would be very valuable at times when you are on steep inclines/declines, laying on your side, etc. I am pretty worried about the bearings in my engine - if I blow it up then I'll never be able to afford another one like probably.

runs acculators

Sorry that should have been accumulators.

My engine donor (89 Sub with tow package) had the oil cooler and I got it with the engine. With AZ heat I figured, "can't hurt", so I left it on. No idea if it helped or not. Now I'm thinking of removing it just to reduce the possibility of problems from leaks. Sorry, not much help but, I am running one on my K30 buggy...

I was having some high speed cooling, oil pressure issues so I decided to try an oil cooler to see if it would help. Problem solved. Engine temps dropped by 20 degrees and oil pressure is no longer a problem.

hrmm.. so far it's been an interesting mix of responses.

Thats exactly why I tried one, but still, no help. All of my SBCs have really low oil pressure at idle. I guess I will just have to get used to it.

even if it doesnt reduce oil temps they add about 1.5 quarts to the oil system and IMO the more oil in the system the better.

Really.. so the oil cooler helped your coolant temps too? Makes sense though...

My oil pressure isn't that bad (30psi @2500rpm), but I do have to run the heater sometimes to keep the coolant at 220-225 on hot days..

I have been having real problems with my Jeeps 4.2L... Once it gets hot I start to loose oil pressure and then at idle some times it will drop out completely.
I was starting to think that maybe I need an oil cooler for my Jeep to help with the oil viscosity. That combined with a higher volume oil pump and I am hoping I wont need a new engine. :(

If your pressure drops to 0 at idle sometimes, you better hope you have a screwed up gauge or sending unit. A HV pump will only mask the problem, plus they are hard on cam/dist drive gears.

You should also consider running synthetic oil in your engine. That goes a long ways in reducing the oil temp. Sometimes another viscosity is nessesary, too. A hot big block running 5 mph in hot weather appreciates 15-50 mobile one.

I *will* be running an oil cooler whenever in the hell I get my rig done, btw.

BWAHAHAHA. :flipoff2:

I imagine that an oil cooler is much like a radiator. There are proper and improper ways to size them, install them, and feed air to them. I don't see how a properly set up oil cooler wouldn't help engine temps ... let alone prolong the life of the oil.

P.S. Kirchayn North Yard (Fredonia) tomorrow morning, 10a.m. sharp. Hopefully a d300 and hp60 are comin' home with me.

Oil cooler....what about tranny and PS coolers... I could care less about my oil temp (as long as my engine temp is in check) but my PS and Trans ~ Thats another story.
