: Project....Whatever

Yes...another project. Well, I can't call this much of a project since there won't be too much fabrication or modifications done to it. It will be used for trails and some mud.

My plans are to eventually install a 6" lift kit, and one-tons, as well as hacking the fenders to fit up to 42" tires. I still haven't decided whether to go with leaf springs up front or not. This would keep me from having to extend the radius arms and make new drop brackets for them. Plus, one ton's don't have C-wedges. Although I still might throw Chromo's in the D44 and call it good. It's still up in the air.

I already have a set of 38" TSL's with 90-99% tread mounted on wheels that I got for $500. I just got my engine back from the machine shop yesterday ($3k parts & labor).

-1969 Lincoln 460 block (C9VE-B)
-Bored .030
-TRW Forged pistons (L2404F) 22cc dish
-D0VE-A heads
-3-angle valve job with hardened seats
-CompCams 204/214* duration, .491/.512 lift
-Double roller timing chain
-HV oil pump
-Edelbrock Performer 460 intake
-Holly 650cfm carb (will probably need to step up to a 750cfm)

My camera died after the first picture of the new engine. I might get around to taking more tomorrow or the day after.

This will be a slow build, so I'll add new info as I get around to it..

I thought is was called a Dana 44 - because you can run up to a 44" tire with them. :D :D :D

so what did you do to the new motor to stop the detonation from destroying the piston?
or better yet what caused the old motor to die so horridly?

Did you read my first post? About 50/50 mud and trails (woods). And yes, I know I'm going to break the stock D44. But I don't have a spare D60 laying around :flipoff2: My buddy is running the same setup as me ('78 Bronco, 460, 38's, and Cromo's/spools in his 44/9" and has been very successful. He's got a lead foot too).

When I got it, it was a 460 block with a 429 crank and 429 pistons in it. Flat-top pistons and D0VE heads (72cc chambers) don't mix too well with 87 octane (which is what I suspect the previous owner ran in it). It was blown up when I got it...

I put in a 460 crank, and forged pistons with a 22cc dish. Compression should be well in check for 93 octane.

This outta be badass when it gets runnin....

Built 460s are fuckin sick as hell. I see a lot at mudbogs and shit, they'll run with, or all over built big block Chevy's and 440s all day long. I'd love to have a 460 truck someday. Just pure balls. Built 460s remind me of a part from a book I read one time about Nascar.....Sunday Money by Jeff MacGregor.

"Apocalypse in every cylinder, pistons hammering hot and remorseless as hell's forge, the manifold ravenous, roaring for air and explosives, belts shreiking, crankshaft screaming threats, spinning of razor sharp metal shavings like a lathe, the oil tortured and useless, boiling in the pan, the rods, the valves, the lifters and springs flying together and apart, crashing back and forth, metal on metal, sharp as a sickle on skin, exhaust thundering down blowin 8 foot flames out from under da doors, and that petro stench, that sweet oil filled 'I just got done working on my engine all day' smell, all of it held together by nothing more than an idea, the faded ink of an engineers blue print, and all the while...the big block v8 is in all of it's intracacy and selfish clatttering is trying to tell us something, through the anger you hear from the deafeningly outrageously loud headers you hear;

'Fuck with me, play with me, rev me up, rev me some more, give me another 2000 RPMS, push me to my limit, the verrrry last limit, to the point where I am testing the limits on the thread strength of the bolts that are holding my bottom end together...come on, just a little further; I WANNA HEAR MY FUCKING VALVES FLOAT! COME ON BITCH! You can't break me!'

Through it all, through the sounds of it's inevitable self destruction, the merciless beating it puts itself through, only to come back and ask for it all over again, only harder and faster this time, through it all, you hear it saying to you in your head;

'You don't have the balls, the gumption to blow me up! You can't even come close to turning me into scrap metal!'

Thought that might give ya a little gitty up to build a badass 460....:flipoff2:

Hell yeah!

I have been debating on getting another 460, with 80K origional miles on it (1978) and leaving it on the stand to build up in my spare time. Only $300 from my dad's friend. If I had the spare money, it would be in my shop now...

That, my friend, is fucking sweet :smokin:

It also helps explain what my pitiful excuse of a peabrain thinks its hearing when I wrap my stroked 460 waaaay past its working limit on a regular basis

Well...the engine is in the Bronco. Just need to install the carb, distributor, fill with coolant, and break her in. Sorry about the pics (or lack of), but I need to get some more batteries for the camera...

Believe it or not, I actually added that all in. The beginning part of that was in a book, but only a couple sentences and I forgot to unquote his part and start mine.

Yea, I'm not good at too many things, but when it comes to descriptive writing, I'm not gonna lie, I kick ass.....especially if I'm writing about something I'm into. It's always been a dream of mine to write for Peterson's or something someday. Someday....

I'll see what I can do. Plans are to install the dizzy and carb this weekend and break her in a 1800RPM for 15-20 minutes! I need to 'flush' the gas tank as well.

HOLY SHIT, asshole, thats some hella good writing! After reading that, it makes me think everything I own needs a big block, including the Honda 3 wheeler......... You mind if I copy that and post it as the explanation why so many of us are obsessed with our builds?

Sorry about the delay with the video. I've only got one friend with a camera/recorder (30 seconds only), and he was MIA this weekend. I might be able to talk him into coming over this week.

Anyways, I drove it around the yard and took it down the road and back and she performed great. Suprisingly, when we fired her up for the first time, she pured like a kitten. It was only about 5-6 degrees off. It's now set at 9* advanced w/o vaccum. The carb is a little small, as she likes to sputter above 3800rpm, and when stabbing the throttle. I also have some adjusting to do with the throttle linkage, as it's not fully opening the 4-barrel.

Once the test drive was over, we kinda got bored and threw on the 38's, with no lift, for shits and giggles. I still don't have the power steering bled, so I was unable to turn these lock-to-lock yet to test clearance...

6" lift will come first. I have to clear the radius arms from the fender-exit headers before they get trashed when flexing.

Engine is probably pushing 400HP/500TQ....but I'm no expert.
