I have got a 1974 J-10 (jeep P/U)
with a late 60's sbc 350, 3-speed manual(saginaw?), that's married to a rockwell t-221.
I want to swap in an sm465 out of a 76 chevy PU.
My question is, does anyone out there know whether or not i can keep the current bellhousing/clutch setup to get the 465 bolted to the motor? or will I need to switch those also?
Although I think the rockwell is cool/strong/different and lets you keep good driveshaft angles, I will probably swap in a 205.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
adam

The 3 speed has a smaller pilot diameter where it pilots into the bell housing than the SM465, so your current bell housing will not work. AFAIK, both trannies have a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft, so the clutch parts would work.

The Saginaw trans will have the 4.6875 dia input bearing retainer, the SM465 has 5.125, you could have your bell machined, but the 465 will probably come with a bellhousing that will work fine, unless you've customised the Saginaw bell. The SM420 has the same 4.6875 input as the Saginaw, you could bolt one of those up, plus you'd get a lower creeper gear, is that rockwell and divorced setup? If so you'd be cool with the SM420, most of them were 2wd, or you could go with a SM465/married NP205, they are very common and easy to find, just sold two of them for $200.

Damn,
that's what I was afraid of.
The rockwell is married to the 3-speed, so it wouldn't be easy to mate up to a 420, but that would be very cool.
Where are all of these $200.00 sm465/205 setups in Raleigh, NC?
I can only find them for like 400 w/ no bellhousing.
Anybody wanna deal? I would take either a 420 w/xfer setup or 465/205 setup w/ a bellhousing.

Adam,
FWIW, your Rockwell 221 should net you some cash - I sold one on eBay a year or so back and the fella was grateful to get it - they are hard to find. Mine had a 465 in front of it, so I know that the Rockwells had the SM420 (or a Saginaw 3 speed tranny as you call it) in front of them in the early/mid 60's, but in the late 60's they used the SM465. I am not certain, but I'll bet the bolt pattern on my 465/Rockwell adapter would fit your Rockwell. That way you would only have to find a 465 (4wd version - 10 spline - of course).
Alternatively, you may wish to bite the bullet and get a 465/205 combo.

Quoting a very knolegable guy on the 60-66 GMC email list I am part of.
"The SM 465 was introduced in 1968 as an option in all GM built pickups"
I think the Rockwell T221 was used up till 1971 or 72 I think. I just sold a SM-465/205 combo for $225 about a month ago complete with the hydraulic clutch (from an 85 Chevy).
