Hey guys, i did a search on AW4 speed sensors but couldnt find any pictures.

I'm going to be using a 231 t case in my truck and I was hoping you guys would know some of the differences in the available speed sensors for the AW4.

my vehicle is a 97 if that matters at all, its a mitsubishi but mitsu and jeep share a lot of characteristics, one of them being that my mitsu has an AW4 transmission in it.

Does this sensor look like any jeep sensor you've ever seen??

the one on the top (black) is a 97 Mitsubishi, goes in the tailshaft housing of the AW4, i had to swap the tail housing from a jeep AW4 to bolt up a NP231, the blue one was in the tail housing of the jeep, the jeep i stole this from is a late 80's early 90's, im thinking i might have to go up in the year range to get something a little similar.

Sorry for the wall of text, on to the pics;

both are 2 wire but the jeep one is 3 "prong" (IIRC)..

Those are only for use by the TCU to determine tranny speed for shifting. They are not used at all for the speedometer and ecu. The jeep sensor only has 2 prongs.

The speed sensor on the 231 is near the rear output shaft.

ah yes, this technically has more to do with AW transmissions than the 231 t case, my bad.

but i do need it for the tranny to shift :)

so im still hoping jeep uses a similar speed sensor in the later years, i'd guess 95-96+

For starters why not cut the plug off the mitsubishi sensor and put it on the Jeep sensor.

the "flywheel" on the output shaft of the AW4 in the mitsu is a 4 prong, the jeep one is a 2 prong, from what i've read they have different signals which would cause problems... i was really hoping to find a housing the OEM sensor would fit into, otherwise im probably going to drill out the hole and fab it up for the mitsu sensor to "fit" it.

I was just really hoping to find some form of "stock" parts that coupled together for this.

According to this post, you are correct - a 97 + speed sensor should be what you are looking for.

Thank you chuck!!

Now i just need to find a picture of it to confirm that it's a twin to the mitsubishi used sensor. :grinpimp:

Now according to Rock Auto, this is what the sensor from the 98+ jeeps look like. generally speaking i would just buy it and try it but it's $110!! haha. While the size of the sensor looks to be correct, the lack of wiring harness makes me wonder about it, im thinking if i get the housing from a 98+ Jeep AW4 i may be able to just use my stock sensor, that would be LOVELY.

Anyone have a 98+ jeep AW4 tailshaft housing they'd be willing to take a picture of and/or sell me?

Might have better luck on NAXJA with this request.

Might have better luck on NAXJA with this request.

definitely a good point, as i looked through the "jeep hardcore tech" section i noticed a lot of "ls1 this, 350 that, diesel engine swap, turbo 350 trans" topics, not so much stock drivetrain stuff.

but then again this is the hardcore section :smokin:

Guess it's time to dig up my username from naxja :homer:
