The 2100 Motorcraft is perfect for rockcrawling- everything but the Sand dunes and mud bogging. Leave it on there!!!

Thanks for the input, I will, and i get to save money (thats not often that happens).... got alot of other $#!T to spend money on. "The 2100 Motorcraft is perfect for rockcrawling" do i need new floats, springs? or keep as is?
On the same subject of the 304; what up grades do you reccomend?...(JP MAG) says ditch it; and get a 360, but it would be less work do do some upgrades,...distrib. cap, plugs, RV cam? ANY INPUT IS WELCOME.

Don't bother, the 304 is a gutless turd of a motor. Get a 360 (or 401 :D) and never look back.

from what ive read, you cant bolt it (360) right in but i dont have one lying around,...what i do have is a 350 TBI/ 700R4 in a scrap truck. but im kinda on a budget :( and its sad, but i have VERY limited mech skills, so i called around and ALMOST EVERYONE wants about 1500 to drop it in. and i have to spend alot on HD steering, hydro assist, flat tops,...and the list goes on and on and on....

Sell the 350/700 and go to a self pull yard and pick up a 360. The 360 is a bolt in deal. All of the engines components bolt right up. You have to use the ring gear and possibly the harmonic balancer from the 360.

thanks what the HP/torq difference between the 304/360?

360 ring gear is balanced to the motor. Same with the harmonic. There were some changes in the early years with pulleys and offsets (mostly due to changes in alternator suppliers and adding AC) AMC cars ran 727 autos after '71 as well, so that flexplate wouldn't work if you have a TH400 (pre '80 Jeep automatic)

PS: For the past 6 years I have run a 304 from a '77 AMX in my '73 J4000 1 ton and it could pull down a house (It got wrecked because I swerved to avoid taking out a horse on a gravel switchback corner at night time) It's now going into my shortbox '77 J10 with J20 axles to haul my 5th wheel.

Bone stock with 2100, although a swap out to an SP2P and Edelbrock might squeeze a little more out of it. Just don't run tall tires with freeway gears.

Dude, if you have a 304, keep it. I know a guy with a basically stock 304 and he can pull the front wheels up on pavement. It's not a barn burner but it will get the job done. And if you toss on headders and a few other bolt on parts, you can swap them over to a 360 or 401 later when the cash is there. I would not put money in the internals unless you want to keep the 304 long term. And that would be OK. Plenty of motor.

But if you can get a 360 or 401 build that.

Keep the 2100, put in a better ignition system (check out Bulltear for HEI stuff but I like the ford upgrade, seach team rush), toss on some torque headders (I like Doug Thorley's Tri-Y). Seach building a 304 and you can get a kick ass little motor.

whoever said the 304 was a turd is an idiot...... 304's will run strong and a long time as well..

mine has been through hell with being bored .030 over.... small cam, performer intake and long tube headers

what type of intake?..
what did you do about your carb?...
(i had an old 1990 YJ) and it wasnt anything special, SOA and some 36s anyway some buddies and I went up to Clayton, OK. a few times, and that I-6 and that POS webber, FLOODED or crapped out everytime i was off camber. and with this new project i got going on I dont want that 2100 to do the same. can you get an off road kit for them?..or new float bowls?... to prevent that?

Try plumbing in a fuel regulator and turning it way down, worked good for me till I saved up and installed Holley pro-jection.
