: Bear hunting this weekend
It has been since 2000 that I have even had a hunting license and I have only hunted for pig, dear and birds.
But now that I live in bear country and I have friends that are avid bear hunters...let me back up. One night in the bar at the recent off-road expo I was Bullshitting with the editor of Side by side magazine and I told her that they need to do a cool story on the stuff a rhino can do. Not just bolt on fancy bling.
well one thing led to another and a few more dring later we are going bear hunting in a Rhino side by side tomorrow with a group of hunters and dogs.
predictions for camo ?
will I be eaten or will I return with a Bear skin rug for my log cabin ?
Doc Holiday13 10-23-2008, 11:09 AM Bring a big gun you know how to use proficiently. Carry a S&W 500 or 460 on your hip and eat sardines while you sit and wait for the bears.
I wanna see you wear the bear pelt like a robe and your head needs to pop out throught the mouth

SilverZuk 10-23-2008, 11:21 AM What do you hunt that is so dear to you?
I would love to go with you to watch the dogs work.
If you are lucky you will get to see a running fight or a bay.
If you get younger bears willing and able to climb, it will be very much like coon hunting.
I have a lot of friends that bear hunt with hounds. I always wanted to go and they always are looking for someone to shoot the bear. I told them I don't want to shoot, so they never call
These guys will flat out tell you, once you shoot it - it is yours. They grab the dogs and taek off hunting again. Just leave you and whoever you drug along to get the bear out.
I would really enjoy seeing some pictures.

dear deer :flipoff2:
I am shooting with a cannon digital and telephoto :laughing:
but ya same with this group from what I gather. doesn't sound like they shoot em unless they are somehow very special.
they do it more to train the dogs and for the activity of it.
Hopefully being on quads and rhinos we can get close to the action and see a showdown. they lost 2 dogs last week to mauling.
I bough a bear tag just in case I get my chance.
They claim they almost always tree at least one and a great day they tree a few

Did they kill the bear that killed the dogs?
If not, I figure those guys will be after that same bear this weekend.
Once most get a bear that kills a dog, they usually are on a mission to kill that bear.
Young dogs will get beat up some before they realize the range and power of a bear. As they get older they should rarely get touched when they bay. If the bear is hurting or injuring the dogs when baying, most hunters want that bear dead.
Hound hunting can be exciting, but it is a lot like fishing and very dependent on the weather. Some days you can jump game and hounds just can't run the track. Other days they run it like they are looking at it. It all depends on the scenting conditions.
Most guys that hunt bears with hounds carry a revolver or carbine. You are shooting a bear out of a tree at relatively close range. You don't need a 9000 magnum with a nuclear warhead, it's just a bear.
What types of bears do you all have?
All we have is black bear.
As far as I know jack has not killed any bears yet this year. ( owner of the deceased dogs )
I will be unarmed.
30-30 lever action is the gun of choice however.
Honestly I don't expect to be shooting a bear myself as I am the journalist on the trip and will be busy trying to capture the action of the hunt on film.
Black bears as far as I know.
I need to find somebody to process the bear into a rug should I take a bear.
anybody have a guy they use ?

I am not apposed to trying. I just don't want to waste a bear learning how.
maybe I will put that fawker in a freezer until I have time to read a write up on the technique.
doubt I can make a bear skin rug as nice as these

but I bet I can tan a hide and make a decent piece from these instructions

Depending on how Jack feels. At some point is going after the bear that killed his dogs. It becomes personal when a man loses his dog. He will have to settle that score with the bear, sometimes it becomes very personal.
A lot of guys use a 30-30 lever. That is what I had in mind when I posted carbine.
Stand down hill of the tree when they knock it out. That is where you will get your best footage. The bear hits the ground, the dogs jump on the carcass, and it all rolls right over top of you.
If the bear isn't dead, you will be on the bottom of a real good fight

Tanning/tawing is a PITA. I would rather pay someone to do it.
If you do it, a 4 1/2 grinder with a wire wheel makes short work of fleshing the hide. :D
The hard part is working the hide from being like a board to an actual fur.
Also, there are guys that sell complete tanning kits. I would recommend one of those. Dixietan paste is a joke. It is hardwood ash, you can get the same thing from your fireplace.
Silverzuk
From the instruction on this link they say to have it professionally tanned. I am ok sending that part our and will do the rest myself.
do you agree with the salt and burlap bag part ? the folks I am going with just chuckled at me and said to put it in a plastic bag. what sez you ?
Step
1
Skin the bear immediately, removing as much fat and flesh as possible. Take care removing the skin around the face and claws. Cut out the foot pads, remove the toe bones up to the claws, split the lips and eyelids and turn the ear inside out to prevent spoilage.
Step
2
Add 20 lbs. of salt to the skin for every 300 lbs. of bear if the hide will be stored until tanned. Turn the hide hair side in and store in a freezer up to 6 months.
Step
3
Send the bear hide out for professional tanning through a taxidermist or tannery.
Step
4
Order taxidermy supplies while waiting for the tanned bearskin: bear eyes, nose, ear liners, artificial claws (if desired), skull form or rug assembly kit, glues and paints.
Step
5
Make a life-size outline (plus 2 inches) of the tanned bear skin on taped together freezer paper with a permanent marker. Use this pattern for the rug felt and padding.
Step
6
Stuff the head with the skull form, taking care to shape the mouth, ears, nose and eyes into a realistic form.
Step
7
Airbrush or stain the inside of the bear's mouth and teeth for an authentic looking head.
Step
8
Hand sew, machine-sew or hot glue up to 3 inches of rug padding to the bottom of the bear hide. The padding should be the same size as the rug.
Step
9
Match the felt layer (or layers) to the decor of the room. Cut one layer of felt, an inch larger than the rug and attach to the padding. Cut another layer of felt in a contrasting color, 2 inches larger than the rug, and attach to the first layer of felt.
Step
10
Allow the bearskin rug to properly dry and cure in a safe place for several days. Display the rug on a wall or in front of the fireplace to enjoy.
Yota Up 10-23-2008, 02:50 PM Good luck, Camo. Hope you guys get one.
I've been out for bears a few times, and never lucky enough to bag one.
Even hiked my ass off in the Idaho mountains for a week.
One of these days...
Make sure you have your taxi lined up before you go on the hunt, so the guy can be ready for you that day.

brewchief 10-23-2008, 06:30 PM Throwing in the freezer will be fine, if you can't get to a freezer then the salt method will work fine. My taxi sends his hides out to be tanned, he dosen't want to mess with it, must be nasty because he's mounted a skunk or two:laughing:
Here's what I got in Canada 2 years ago, it was over bait, I would like to try a dog hunt however.

a bear stole his gold pan last weekend :laughing:
WVHeep 10-23-2008, 06:48 PM Skin it out well, get off all the fat you can. Then fold it in half, inside against inside to keep the fat off the hair as much as possible. Fold it or roll it up, and put in a couple garbage bags and freeze it til you're ready to take it to the taxidermist. Then make all the meat except the backstraps into sausage.

That one is still in the freezer, longer than I would like but I've seen bears in longer come out fine, planning a full mount, I already have a shoulder mount and a rug, no pics of those, sorry.
And in case anybody cares that bear weighed 265# but was very lean(this was in the fall and it should have had a thick layer of fat already) but it looked much bigger, guide estimated 325-350 if it was a good year food wise based on body size, skull was just over 21" green but has shrunk some.
Weapon was a .50 cal Knight muzzleloader, 12 yards away, bear only went 5-7 yards after I shot it.

Ive never hunted bear, but I respect the fact that any injured animal especially a bear can still rip your ass apart. I second a side arm, anything even if its not a 44 mag Ruger Alaskan is better then nothing and trying to punch it in the head as its got a piece of you in its mouth.
Roxywheels 10-23-2008, 08:28 PM I am getting closer and closer to getting all your shit! :flipoff2: :roxy:
Beat95YJ 10-23-2008, 09:00 PM Awesome, I am beer hunting too. I'll be in Cabo though...I'll make sure and get one for you Camo :flipoff2:
kneedownnate 10-23-2008, 09:17 PM It may have been said, but if you're in the rubicon area, all you have around are black bear. You may potentially see any color from jet black to super blonde though. I personally like the look of a nice red or cinnamon the most.
And yes, a sidearm is a great idea! My dad's friend has guided for bear over dogs for many years, many of those years with my dad helping, and afaik never did either of them go out without at least a sidearm, my dad carrying his dan wesson .357. My dad never had to use his that I know of, but his friend has.
I've been hiking since before spring and haven't driven down a dirt road, hiked a trail or walked down an old logging road without seeing at least 2 different sets of bear tracks of different sizes in different areas. I've also seen more tracks with pads as wide as my hand is long, which is only about 7" long. This is the first year since 91 or 92 that I haven't actually seen at least one bear though, which has me baffled.
I know this isn't the best pic, but a couple years ago I ran into the biggest bear I've seen in a long time while hiking the trinity alps. Between my dad and I, we figured he was well over 400 pounds. Far from a monster black bear, but fairly rare to see one that size, let alone see him 3 times the same day, once after we'd had a fun staring contest! It was neat seeing one that size, and was the first time I've ever had one stay put after I stepped into the open.
SilverZuk 10-24-2008, 05:11 AM do you agree with the salt and burlap bag part ? the folks I am going with just chuckled at me and said to put it in a plastic bag. what sez you ?
It depends on how fast you can freeze it.
The salt is cheap insurance.
I salt coon hides, put them in a feed sack (poly), and then freeze.
SilverZuk 10-24-2008, 05:27 AM and was the first time I've ever had one stay put after I stepped into the open.
That looks like a good bear. A big bear's head will appear small like the one in that pic.
I've had one that stayed put. He would stand up on his back legs and "huff" at an ATV. I was glad when someone killed him. It turned out to be a Pope & Young bear. When the guy shot him, the bear had gotten smaller and was getting poor. It was good that he took him, because that is when they get dangerous.
As far as a sidearm, if I am carrying a rifle it will be highly unlikely that I'm going to strap another 6# of steel to me. I carry enough stuff as it is with a quart of water and a rifle. I'm not adding more weight to pack around.
As far as going to a tree as long as someone I know will get it done has a rifle, I wouldn't care to be unarmed.
You guys are going to get me in the mood to call Mike to go bear hunting. I wouldn't mind being the camera guy. They ride with a couple dogs rigged on top of the dog box. When these dogs smell a bear, they will bark. They usually let a good track dog loose to work the track to see if it can be run before they turn out all the dogs. If the track dog takes off on the track, or jumps the bear, they turn the other dogs out.
Then there is the riding, stopping to listen, figuring out how to get where they are or cut them off, sometimes riding around tracking (with tracking collars). When the bear gets tired or too much pressure on, it will climb a tree. Most try to ease in on it, because sometimes they will bail out and run. If that occurs, you will repeat the chase part until you get to the next tree. Some bears will go to a hole (around here old mine openings). That is the end of the chase, and if you have a dog dumb enough to go in the hole, it may not come out.
SilverZuk 10-24-2008, 05:34 AM One guy was telling me a time they ran one in hole. He said it was a natural hole and they could hear the bear huffing and growling. He said as they started catching dogs, one young walker hound was encouraged when the owner got there and ran in the hole.
He said their hearts sunk. They heard the fight in the hole, and the bear ran out of the hole. Standing there 5' away from all of them, dogs on lead straps face barking the bear.
The bear turned and ran back in the hole. Then the walker dog came out.
They tried to catch the dog and it jumped back in the hole with the bear. They could see flashes of white as the dog was running around behind the bear, biting it in the ass. the bear came out of the hole again, they had all the dogs tied back. They jumped back, and bear ran back into the hole. The walker dog came out of the hole and they caught it. It didn't have a scratch on it.
He said that dog was later killed by a bear. The bear had swam the Gauley River and got out on a rock in the middle. The Gauley is some of the best white water there is. The hunters got there and saw the bear on the rock and swatting the dogs off the rock. They had to sit helplessly calling for the dogs to no avail. The brave walker wasn't there when they got there and was never seen again.

That's what my dad had always told me too. A lot of people will see a bear at a distance, see a big head and it tricks them into thinking it's a big bear - shoot it, then find out it's a little guy. I helped some guys find their big bear once after hearing them shoot nearby, only to find out it doubtfully broke 120 pounds  I figured a couple years ago that I've probably seen about 100 bears in the woods without dogs, despite an older guide telling me I'd never see a bear without the aid of dogs. I've patterned them well enough to know exactly what they'll do when they figure out what I am, but this guy just stood there. That was the first time my heart rate has ever changed when seeing a bear, and the first time I've ever felt uneasy while playing the staring game.
You only take a quart of water with you? I rarely have less than 100 oz. with me, and have been known to pack over 170 oz. before.

 funny how that happens! My dad's friend had to go in a cave one time to check to make sure the bear was dead, and the only way to get in was to crawl on his belly. Little did he know one of his dogs found a back way in, and right when he got close to it the bear started to move and growl, he started shitting his pants and crawled out as fast as he could, then everybody realized it was the dog tugging at the bear's ass and laughed their asses off  He also helped a cliant get a 500lb 3 legged bear that supposedly ran scary fast

Oh yea, I was checking for fresh deer sign around the property tonight and saw what looked like some small bear tracks maybe 80 feet from the house! I'll have to check when there's more light out, but it definately looked like a wide, blunt little pad in the dust.

Not necessary man! I don't remember where you said you lived, but bear season is pretty long in california and it should be easier to find a bear once all the deer hunters leave the forest. I come across most the ones I see by chance, but if you're willing to put in a little time you'll find one no problem. I saw the one in my pic 3 times that day. First time he didn't know I was there, second time was when we had our stairdown, then third time I saw him again as he was coming out of the woods in a totally different spot. He had no clue I was there the 3rd time and I got several pics and one short video, but the second I zoom out on my camera the pic quality goes to shit so I'm left with grainy pics like that one.

Actually, it's all about the ears. Little ears=big bear. That's how you judge them. Babies are born with adult ears and grow into them.
I'm in D-5, by the way. I think I'll head north a little for the next hunt. But first I need $$$ for the taxi - I think it'll cost me $800 or so for the rug.

Your dry climate takes more water out of your system.
A quart will last me a normal day in fall temps. I always hydrate well before I head out.
Also, in an emergency there is plenty of water to drink in the woods around here. I've drank from quite a few seeps and springs.
The more I learned about water and sewage treatment, the less I drank from springs/seeps. I'm sure that 99% of the time the water is good. I've drank gallons and gallons of river water swimming in the river and was never sick.
It is that 1% I am worried about. I don't want to get giardia, or something else.

He's still strapped down to a crate with a ball gag in his mouth.
Rumor has it he strayed too close to san fran, where the definition of "bear hunting" differs greatly from the rest of the world.
Fridays hunt was a good lesson in humility.
it has been hot and dry since the last rain a few weeks ago and even in the shade there was little ground moisture.
we found several sets of fresh prints in our hunt area
1. the first tracks we turned the dogs loose on turned out to be a day old. the dogs tracked the bear to where it bedded down no problem but lost the scent after that.
we changed tatctics some and roaded the dogs on the shady side of a canyon but they kept picking up deer scent in the trees that was obvious some deer hunters had scented the trees to lure in bucks. we worked the canyon for a few hours until we were pretty sure it was cleared.
so we left that area after and went to a part of the forest that had lost of manzanita bush and right away found a track, turned the dogs loose and spend the next several hours working that.
they started doing laps thru a big canyon complex and it stated to seem like they had picked up a big cat rather then a bear by the patterns they were working. it was almost sunset and rather then tree a bear or cat at night and have to wait for day to shoot it if it was warrented we called it a day.
hunted from sunrise to sunset and had a great day enjoying the majestic beauty of our public lands in the Sierra's.
Sunday,
I decided to go do some gold prospecting and found a nice nugget and a few of the guys went bear hunting and in 15 minutes treed a bear 100 feet off the road. hahaha isn"t that always how it goes.

Hunter mauled by grizzly north of Gardiner
published on Sunday, October 26, 2008 9:19 PM MDT
By JESSICA MAYRER Chronicle Staff Writer
A hunter was mauled by a female grizzly bear traveling with a cub north of Gardiner Sunday on the first day of big-game season.
The man’s legs were injured in the morning attack and he was taken to the hospital, Kevin Frey, bear specialist for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, said Sunday afternoon.
“With all of the hunters out there, it’s just a cautionary heads-up that the bears are still active,” Frey said.
Another hunter helped the injured man, whose name has yet to be released, to safety. He was then taken by ambulance to the hospital, Frey said.
This is the first reported bear mauling in the area this fall, Frey said. That contrasts with last year, when an abundant apple crop near Gardiner made the area attractive for grizzlies. Several bear-human conflicts erupted as a result, Frey said.
Now that food sources are drying up and bears are scrambling to gain weight before going into hibernation, the lumbering creatures are returning to the area of abundance remembered from last season, Frey said. That, coupled with the high-protein remains left behind by hunters’ game, makes the area a popular place to forage, Frey said.
“They’re totally focused on gaining weight for the year,” Frey said. “This is the last real active phase.”
FYi, Gardiner is about 60 mi SE of where Im at and on the NE YNP entrance.

!
257 weatherby and I shot him in the head from a rear quarter angle. The bullet somehow came out of his tongue so he pumped alot of blood out of his mouth.
The first shot dropped him instantly and so hard that he landed on the branch he was standing on and almost hung in the tree.
Luckily he had a death twitch that knocked him off the branch or I would have had a hard climb to get him down.
he hit the ground from about 15-20 feet up the tree and still had some twitch in em so we put a 357mag in his ear to finish it quick.

Is it common to shoot a bear in the head? I would have been worried about destroying the skull and not having it for the rug.

They guys I hunt with have been bear hunting all of their life. Their daddys before them did it that way, they do it that way and they told me to do it that way. so I have no idea if it is common or not. just how I was instructed.
I can tell you it is extremely effective :D
as far as the skull. It didn't seem to do much damage however I am making a rug out of him and will use a fiberfill type pillow for the skull so I can lay my weary head on his big ol furry niggin as I lay by my fireplace

of course I am gonna eat him
roasts for stew, steaks from the back strap and sausage :smokin:

Sounds like a good enough reason for me. I'm surprised the rifle bullet didn't damage the skull more. I'd expect to see brains everywhere and the skull all fucked up, but it appears intact in the pics.
tacobob 10-29-2008, 03:20 PM Cool sounds delicious.
primergray 10-29-2008, 03:37 PM Damn, I miss the days of bear hunting with my Dad growing up!
We used to hunt the Blueberry patches in the Cascade mountains in Washington every year.
Make sure you trade some meat for keibasa(sp)!!

speedo 10-30-2008, 01:09 AM Black bears can be pretty tasty especially if they have been eating a lot of blue berries but grizzlies are rarely edible. Camo, I think that your bear was a little larger than this blackie that I shot last year but he was tender and tasty.

SilverZuk 10-30-2008, 05:11 AM Is it common to shoot a bear in the head? I would have been worried about destroying the skull and not having it for the rug.
Common practice. You don't want a live bear rolling out of a tree within 10-35 yards from you, the dogs, and everyone else. If you really are worried about the skull (if you are sure it is a trophy), then aim about 4" back on the neck and try to shoot just behind the opposite ear.

Why oh why did you shoot that dog? The asians always shoot baby bears around here for the same reason, they want a tender little bear. I'm always giving the ones I work with crap before the weekends and tell them no baby bear, only big bear! Honestly, the vast majority of bears I've seen in the area have probably been 200-250 pounds.
kneedownnate 10-31-2008, 08:39 PM What is it that makes the griz meat unedible? I always figured they'd be tasty since they eat meat.
I don't know all the types of berries our bears eat, but they seem to mostly eat manzanita berries and black berries, and up in the higher country where there are raspberries they eat them too.
I've been wondering what mountain lion meat tastes like too :D

I've only eaten one griz that tasted any good, most of them smell so foul that you couldn't stand to get near them and hoped for a good breeze when you were skinning.
