I am workin in the garage on our 78 and wanted to start cleanin misc parts. i saw the splash guards and was wondering if i needed them (o-ring sealed dist too)...and dont give me the bs about "they put them there for a reason..". If it makes any difference we usually powerwash the WHOLE thing (inside and out) after a few mudding trips.

thanks,
Max

SpaceGhost and I just discussed this....you have two options.

1) continue to use the splash plate, but trim everything away except what's needed for the bolting area and for mounting the brake junction between the short hard line and the flex line. The splash guard, flange, and outer seal are all necessary to properly space the bolts...they will bottom out otherwise. This is what I did.

2) install metric studs instead of bolts and not install the splash guard...and the outside seal is optional too then. I haven't looked yet, but the big True Value in Neenah outta have the right metric studs in stock - they had the correct ones for my t-case mount. This is how Mike mounts his.

Next time Mike and I talk on the phone, we'll be sure to discuss two more ways to install something in/on a Cruiser...heh heh

He may be talking about the splash guards that are mounted on the frame in the engine compartment. If you are Max, I would run them if you do any mud or sloppy trails. They are not necessary for the vehicle to function, but sure do keep a lot of crap from getting in there.

The one under the radiator and belts I would definately run, keep them (beltys) dry if possible. As far as the o-ringed dist shield, no good reason not to run them. They keep dust, dirt and grime outta there.

If you were talking about the backing plates, then what Woody said!
