shoyrtt 10-24-2008, 05:36 PM Just an FYI: Sending in a letter can be done by every person in your family. The BLM officials in fact are more likely to read the letter written by your kids than with the generic letter generator. The other benefit to writing ANY letter is it will give you standing later during the NEPA process. :)
I went to the meeting today in Victorville hosted by the BLM and the Marines. They know there is opposition to the move west. The more pressure we can mount, the more likely it is that we create a "win/win" as mentioned by the Marine officials. We keep Johnson Valley and the Marines move east in their base expansion.
Thank you for your help!

How's this:
I am an avid outdoor recreational enthusiast currently residing in the Phoenix area in Arizona. I previously lived in Ridgecrest, CA just a few hours from Johnson Valley where I was introduced to some of the best 4-wheeling I have ever done in the United States: The Hammers. I am also a rock climber, hiker, and backpacker who loves to recreate in the many wonderful places this great country has to offer. I am an active member of the Tread Lightly organization and the United Four Wheel Drive Association. I am writing this letter because I respectfully disagree with the withdraw of 180,000 acres of BLM land in Johnson Valley.
The forfeit of this precious land in Johnson Valley would be a tremendous devastation to the four wheeling community. This area is a premier area for off road enthusiasts, such as myself, and it is a popular destination for many enthusiasts all over the country. I have been four wheeling for several years in many popular areas all over the Southwestern United States including, but limited to, Moab, Table Mesa, Florence Junction, Las Cruces, Lake Tahoe, the historic Rubicon trail, and of course, the Hammers in Johnson Valley. The Hammers is by far one of my favorite places because of the quality and abundance of difficult trails and it's location makes it a year-round destination. This area is referred to many enthusiasts as "sacred ground" and the "Mecca" of four wheeling in California, and the Southwest for that matter. Loosing this area would be equivalent to climbers loosing El-Capitan or Half Dome as climbing destinations. Just as El-Cap and Half Dome are "sacred ground" and climbing "Mecca's" in Yosemite to avid climbing enthusiasts who like a challenge, so are the Hammers in Johnson Valley to off-road enthusiasts who also like a challenge.
The United States is one of the largest countries in the world and we have a vast amount of land available for all purposes. There is more than enough room for us to effectively and efficiently train our military without closing off popular recreational areas to the public. I know personally how large some of our current training ranges are in the southwest from my work with training our troops at several Navy, Marine, and Air Force ranges throughout the United States. The training ranges in Fallon, China Lake, and Yuma consume a massive amount of land for military training without closing off public access to classic recreational areas, such as the sand dunes in Yuma or Death Valley near China Lake. This proposal for the land in Johnson Valley would close off an irreplaceable off road area that many people may never get to experience even once. Please consider keeping this area available to the public and to the troops who are off-road enthusiasts who also use this area after they have served. The pursuit of happiness and the freedom our troops fight and die for will be lost if the best places this great country has to offer are no longer available for us to enjoy.
Kurtuleas 11-05-2008, 09:39 PM 380 letters sent as of tonight through the letter generator.
Keep 'em coming folks. Please pass the word on. We need a LOT more.
Kurtuleas 11-10-2008, 11:38 PM As it stands right now, the Boxer/McCown wilderness bill campaign has roughly 1,900 more letters sent off through the generator than Johnson Valley has.
And that area has one little route that we are trying to save that could barely be considered a 4x4 route.
Can I get some help here folks??

Hammer Hog 12-09-2008, 08:35 PM Come awn folks, get off your lazy butts and get this thing circulating.
The word needs to continue to get out. At the last scoping meeting I was told that the Military expected a lot more opposition than they currently have received. To me that is very disturbing. They will get what they want if we don't get our numbers up. So get on with it!!!
By the way, refresh my memory here, who all gets a copy of these generated letters?

Never mind, I just found the list:
Who these letters are going to:
When you use this letter generator, your letter will be sent to many different decision makers: The Secretary of the Interior, The local representative Jerry Lewis, the entire board of supervisors, The United States Marines and several people in the BLM.

bakerhab2003 12-14-2008, 01:47 PM Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Notice of withdrawal application and segregation published September 15, 2008, in the Federal Register and named "Notice of Proposed Legislative Withdrawal," on behalf of the Partnership For Johnson Valley (PFJV), it's partners and myself. This comment letter does not supplant any of the rights and privileges of our partners to submit comments of their own to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and retain their individual standing.
The request by the Marines to segregate the lands described in the Proposed Withdrawal to Support Large-scale Marine Air Ground Task Force Live Fire and Maneuver Training Program should be granted with the following conditions; No areas that are within the proposed study area be released before the study is completed and the EIS is prepared and available for public comment. I understand that there have been requests made, meetings set up and pressure being applied to release several areas in the segregation study areas. These areas may include but are not limited to the Fry Mountains, the area referred to in the study maps as the South Expansion Study Area, the area between Route 66 and BNSF railroad tracks and west of Chambless, CA, and in the general area to the North west of the Cadiz Dunes.
I request that no areas be released until after the study by the Marines is completed. To do so will put in jeopardy the integrity of the entire process and will indicate to all that the study is a sham and that money talks. The entire area that was requested must be studied in it's entirety and the alternatives completely explored in order to keep the process above board and to prove that the Marines do in fact want to be good neighbors. Should any of the area be released prior to the completion of the study, I then request that the area known as the Johnson Valley OHV area be released as well.
Sincerely,
Harry Baker
