: ticking noise from 22RE, not rocker arms??
RockReadyXJ 08-08-2002, 06:08 PM a friend of mine just got a 88 4 runner with a 22RE in it, he got a killer deal on it but its making a ticking noise. i havn't got into my engine yet, and my friends never worked on this type of engine befor but we took off the valve cover and adjusted the rocker arms to the specs in the haynes manual with a feeler gauge thinking that would help but no go. still ticks. It gets louder and speeds up as the RPM's go up.
just wondering if any of yall would have any ideas on what to check next. we want to get it running decent befor the SAS starts.
thanks for any ideas.
2stroke 08-08-2002, 06:31 PM pull the valve cover back off. check for slack in timming chain. can you see if guides are broken? see if it is eating into the timming cover?
jasonmt 08-08-2002, 06:55 PM 22RE's have always had noisy valves and injectors. If your timing chain and guides are ok, it is most likely just "New to 22RE nervousness about the noise syndrome" Listen to a few other 22RE's to see if the noise you ate hearing is out of the ordinary.
dirtdirt99 08-08-2002, 07:30 PM my 22r does the exact same thing -no clue what it is.
i adjusted the valves too didnt help... also changed exhaust manifold gasket thinkin maybe was exhaust leak. didnt help either...
need more ideas...
2stroke 08-08-2002, 07:44 PM do they have lots of miles?

Chister 08-08-2002, 10:24 PM Timing Chain! Timing Chain! Timing Chain! Timing Chain!
And get to it before you milkshake the motor like I did!
crash 08-08-2002, 10:59 PM There is also a TSB thru toyota for this, has something to do with shimming the rockers on the rocker shaft
fullywrecked 08-08-2002, 11:57 PM I would put a t-chain set in it.

Will a Toyota dealer give youi a copy of a TSB or Do you know where I could find one? I'd like to come up with a way to quiet the fawker down. Mine rattles pretty nasty and the timing chain has less than 20K on it. It has never not had the rattle.
RockReadyXJ 08-09-2002, 04:58 AM we did notice there was a nice amount of play in the timing chain, the motor is a 88 and has about 120k on it. changing the chain on my jeep is easy, is the yota going to be that much harder?
thanks i'll pass on the info
2stroke 08-09-2002, 06:21 AM its kinda a pain in the ass to change
2stroke 08-09-2002, 06:23 AM any shop with alldata or Mitchel computrs can give you "technical service bulitans" sp
STUB25 08-09-2002, 03:30 PM I just finished rebuliding my 92' 22re and had the same problem(reason for rebulid). Well we did the RA adjusting and took a look at the timing chain and nothing. As we were taking the pistons and the crank out we noticed that the connecting rod bushing(piston end) had some noticable play in it. We spoke to a friend (Toyota Mech.) And he told us that it is very common and matter of fact he said it is about 85% common. But ya know what else he said... They'll run like that for as long as you keep changing the oil!!!
Yardsale 08-09-2002, 06:51 PM Fuel injectors are noisy.
Could be a rod knock, knock, knock ...
crash 08-09-2002, 10:40 PM One nice thing about a toy motor is the floating piston. Any machine shop can replace the bushings, every motor I have built had them done since they are a shoft material like the bearings on the crank... Could not find the TSB for the rocker spacers, but here is the part #90561-16005, and i would be willing to bet any good parts guy could get the TSB if you give him the part #...
Omt x4 08-09-2002, 10:42 PM Mine's a recent rebuild and has a new LC timing chain kit and it still ticks. Haven't heard one that doesn't.
desertPOS 08-09-2002, 11:34 PM does the ticking sound stay consistent hot or cold, or does it change as the engine warms up? Could possibly be exhaust leak at the header, check that out. If you hear the exhaust popping when compression braking, you know your exhaust is sucking cold air somewhere up near the header. My truck was ticking really loud when I got it, had two studs sheared off letting header leak. New gasket, studs, nuts and enginge is quiet again.
paulantkow 04-10-2006, 05:02 AM I new to this forum and with all the information I see I thank all of you. But the problem I am having is I have a constant engine ticking noise. The motor was just rebuilt with only 5000 miles on it. When I first start the truck the engine it really doesn't make any ticking noises until it warms up. The more you accelerate the faster the ticking is. I adjusted the valves and that’s not were the noise is the loudest at. The timing chain has tension to it and does not seem to be rubbing on any thing. It sounds like to metal surfaces are tapping each other. If any one has any ideas please let me know thanks
Boost_Junkiee 04-10-2006, 05:16 AM Could be worn out valveseats. Most likely it's normal toyota loud valve train. It's something to get used to, you know, like the mole on your grandma's lip.

Is this what you are referring to, Crash?
