: Newer engine swap possible?

I just got a deal on a 91 blazer CHEAP. I am needing an engine. I am wondering if newer modeled chevrolet_GMC motors (1999) can be somewhat easily swapped in. I realize I will have to harvest all of the wiring harness ect... I am wondering if a "Kit" is availiable for the swap, or is it not that complicated? I would love to put in a 99 5.3 that I may get a deal on. Any info would be appreciated. I am a Toyota guy and don't know the down and dirty with these engines and compatabilities. I searched with no real luck. :homer: Flame away

I hope you have a flame suit with this being your first post. Other than that, I have a 96-99 Vortech 350 in my Jimmy. I just had the brain retuned to run that motor. If you want to put a different motor in, you will need everything that runs the motor from the donor vehicle. I would do the 5.7 Vortech swap. Much easier and pleanty of power.

^ Like he said! The 5.3 will bolt up, make sure your converter is right because your 1991 does not have an electrically controlled transmission and your computer for the 5.3 will have to be retuned to adjust for this. If you go with the 5.3 and its transmission you will have to swap your 91 transfer case to the newer engine/trans combo because the Blazer is a passenger drop driveline in front. 1992 was the first year for the IFS Blazer, Suburban and 1 ton trucks, they had drivers drop drivelines.:mad3: Flame for effect!

I wasn't totally clear in my first post. The Blazer had a 5.7 liter TBI, 700R4 tranny. I want to upgrade to the newer 5.3 or 5.7 from a newer truck. So If I can physically bolt up the newer engine, what other items are there to deal with. Do I have to upgrade the fuel pump? Are the fuel lines different? A/C compatability? ect?? Sorry for my ignorance... Will the 700R4 even work in this application?

If you go away from the TBI you will have to change the fuel pump. Yes on the trans, but reread my post about the converter. Fuel lines probably will require modifications and the A/C lines may as well I think the compressor on a 5.3 is mounted different than a 5.7. If you used a 5.7 Vortec engine, you can buy an intake from GM that will allow you to use the TBI, ask Glenn he has one! Then all your under hood stuff could stay the same as far as brackets and stuff.

Read this to start off 82 Blazer swap (http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/brandpages/chevy/131_0406_6_0_liter_gm_engine_swap/index.html). Granted its a 6.0L but they are the same size externally as a 5.3L.

Read this as well Gm Gen III V8 info (http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/eb040538.htm)

Its not a bolt in swap. Your 700r4 will bolt right up to the 5.3L.

Go with the 5.7... Moving down in displacement is a sin.

the 5.3 has more power and is easier to modify for more power.

the motor mounts will not bolt right up, they are in a different place on the block.

I looked at this swap in 99 when the 5.3 came out. I was a transmission man at a GM dealer at the time and I became very acquanted with the backside of this engine. The 5.3 will bolt to the 700R4 (its actually a 4L60 in 91) but the the torque converter will not mate with the flex plate. On the 5.7 the flex plate sticks out past the transmission mating flange, on the 5.3 it sits inside the mating flange. Because of this, if you put a 91 model trans. behind a 5.3 you would have about a two inch gap between the converter and flex plate. Then again there are about 6 different part numbers for the 5.3 and the engines won't interchange between vehicles. The swap can be done. Engine, trans, stand alone harness and computer, new mounts. It's alot of work and it's not cheap.

for one yes your tranny will bolt up to the 5.3 and the 6.0 or whatever you want to use you can get the adapter plate that moves your flexplat out and so on (there was a write up in car craft a couple months back with the part numbers and everythin even had those kool pics that showed yay how to:D) and some words of advice which is a little weird is grumpy off 2day? anyways use the search feature its amazing what you can find and yes you can get a painless harness ( i found a crate 5.3 with harness and standalone ecm online for 5gs) for all this or there a few companies out there that can make em for you (texas speed and performance). anyways since nobody is really flaming right now um um um USE THE SEARCH BUTTON 1ST but anyways hell i ask the same things welcome to PBB

5G's???? HOLY FUCK I only have 4k into my 8.1L and its ready to fire up!! And I didnt even get a deal on it! And I had to have extra shit done to the wiring harness. You can have a running 5.3 with all the wiring for under 2K easy. Look around. 5.3's are turds. You can find them all day long for under 1500 easy. Get the factory wiring harness and send it to jims performance. 4 wire hook up after that and your good to go. And it will be 10000x better than the Pain in the ass crap. Doesnt get any easier than that.

also the LO5 is a TBI 350 or 5.7L. Not a 5.3L Unless I'm missing something here.
