: Brake ? Drum to Disc trouble

I swapped in a 8.8 into my ZJ and now with the new Discs I am getting very spongy and very little pedal.

I have bled the entire thing like three times. Might still be air in there but I doubt it.

The proportioning valve is shutting off the flow to the front and sometime the rear when the pedal is pushed. I stuck a clothes hanger in there to stop the valve from actuating and the brakes seem to pump right up but if the pedal is pressed slowly they still go to the floor.

This is a common swap and I am hoping that I am overlooking something. The ZJ has ABS but I have had the fuses pulled for a few years now.

Can I just pull the proportioning valve apart and get a equal proportion to every wheel? This would not really bother me since I don't drive it much but I like the added safety incase I rip a line on the trail.

I can pump the brakes up and do a brakestand pretty easily. Front seems to be holding but the rear is not....

Lines did brake lines and MC did drain completly dry... I bled the MC. Bled the brake lines three times on three different days.

Any help would be great.

if your master cylinder and distribution block went dry, i think there is a specific method to bleed the MC and associated parts before you do a typical brake bleed. just pouring fluid in and bleeding through the calipers won't cut it.

Or so I've read in the FSM.

Yah I bled the MC first. You know those little tubes that circulate the fluid.

What is the proper procedure if I am doing it wrong.

Did the MC then each wheel until I got solid fluid. Let it sit for a day and redo the wheels, sit, redo wheels. Still nothing.

Is there a bleeder on the ABS pump somwhere? I did not find one but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Wow I actually got more help from NAGCA that this board:flipoff2:

Just so you all know this is what the trouble was.

The Accumulator for the ABS needs to be up and running to bleed itself. I had the fuses pulled for several years once I put them back in I started to get a shitload of air and more pedal.

The Stealership said it could take a week to bleed it all without thier special tool for doing it. I personally think it is just a pressure bleeder but they were dicks and would not disclose the item.

Also the proportioning valve is the same for disc's and drums on the ZJ. I would suppose the same could be said for the ABS equipped XJ's and TJ's.

To bypass the ABS pump you need to get a 2 to 1 block for the front since the ABS splits the 1 line from the distro block to 2 lines running to either wheel. The rear is one all the way back. Easy to bypass and worth the time IMO since that Accumulator is a PITA.
