: 66 fix

So, I bought this truck months ago because I have always wanted a 60-66 chevy. I was eventually planning on building one but just didnt get that far yet. Well, when this truck came up for sale about a 100 miles from me I had to have it. As you will see in the pics, there was alot of hokey shit going on. This isnt really a build thread, its more of a fix thread.

Being how I should have payed less for it than what I did cost are gonna be VERY low for upgrades. That and the fact I have other toys limits the amount of money that go into it. With that said alot of what is going on the truck will be things that I have laying around with the occasional big expendatures.

Plate I found in the truck under the seat. You can see how the steering box area is boned!!

Here was the steering arm off the truck. WOW is all I can say. I got a replacement frame piece from a later truck that would work.

I boxed the back of the frame for strength. The fab work I could of done a better job on but like I stated before, I have other projects that I only have a small amount of time for. Also the rear shackle frame area looked like swiss cheese with all the holes in the frame. I plate was cut and welded in for extra strength.

Thats it for now. Ill post more pics and details tomorrow.

Love those years of trucks!!! Keep us updated.

Is it on a more modern frame? It kinda looks like it...

truck looks cool but your fish plates should have an angle to them // or <> it gives it more strength.

looking good, so far.

hard to find parts for that year, especially frames.

x2 on where in Oregon?

Thanks for the compliments guys. The truck is on the factory frame. Origionally it was a 1/2 ton 2wd truck. From what I can find out it was converted in the late 80's to early 90's.

Thanks for the advice on the welding. I have cut many frames in half to fix or shorten them in the past with the same method and there just fine today. You know how it is, you find a good method and you stick with it.

The lugnuts, yeah, only had a couple on the front at that time. The wheels that were on the truck were some rusty sawblades and they had to go. I found those wheels on craigsling for $90.00 so I just got them mounted in that pic.

Anyways, I didnt like the extrernal hubs so I swapped them out for the internal type.

Being how the truck is going to be used of more than just a wheeler I needed a bed to haul things in. As you can see from the pics, there was no bed. $80.00 at home depot and I started cutting. the real bitch of it was cutting ALL 126 bolts out of the bed!!!

brokejoke
10-28-2008, 10:01 PM
The bed was just gonna be natural wood color. What happened is the girlfriend said "why dont you stain it?" I thought about it but figured it was too much work mainly because I didnt care about the inside of the bed. Well, after she swiped a rag full of stain over one board I looked too good to not stain it.

Oh yeah, Im from the Portland area.

80 bucks including the stain and bolts? Shit man I need to fix mine! Post up a materials list please!
How do those highly arched springs ride?
You starting a collection of one 4x4 from each Chevy bodystyle?
A lot of people don't like the older stuff. My first Chevy 4x4 was my 63, it was a great truck! I've owned other brands, but keep coming back to Chevy's. I like their powertrains better than everyone elses.
I got my eye on a 58 Chevy Napco with a fleetside long bed right now.
You know how rare those are?

GRAB the napco!

I remember a 58 Chevy Suburban Napco sitting in my town for years.... it finally disappeared last year... I wish i had grabbed it... guy had it fenced in, and nobody had much of a clue what it was below the glass because it was behind a fence.

just4cuz
10-28-2008, 11:40 PM
Yep I will eventually, guy knows I want it, he just is not ready to sell yet. I've done him some favors and he'll give me first shot at it. I check in with him every few months to see if his lawn tractor needs fixin or anything else. Our city is getting shitty about vehicles (inoperative) setting in driveways. A 66 Ford F250 4x4 has recently dissappeared and 2 mid to late 70's Chevy 4x4's. These were all within a 1 mile area of my house. The Napco has not run since 1987 or so but it is on his property, on a private street, behind a fence. There are also 2 more mid fifties Chevys in my neighborhood that are rarely used and begging for 4wd conversions. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but with the economy like it is she realizes these are a better investment than anything else...except more property.

Yeah, I think the excact bill at home depot was something like $83.00 and some change. That was the wood and the nuts and bolts. The stain I had laying around in the garage which if I recall I payed about $6.00 for it at home depot a couple of months prior. If you planning on rebuilding you bed then what I used is : 7 1x8 10ft boards,
2 1x6 10ft boards
1 1x8 4ft board
126 5/16 1 1/2 bolts with nuts and washers
The only cutting you have to do if for the length (97 inches) and for the wheelwells. Super easy job. All in all it went pretty smooth just time consuming. It could have turned out better cause the metal slatts I just painted over with black spray paint. Didnt even wipe them off!

The springs ride pretty stiff but thats fine cause I would rather have them be stiff on a truck this tall.

As far as owning a truck from every body style, Yeah. I love old chevys and I always have had a knack for making them very nice. I think I still have a licence plate from my old 57 chevy truck that reads "57chev". Having that plate pissed alot of belair owners off!!! I just have to be carefull on this truck cause I bought it as a "wheeler work truck" and have to refrain from making it too nice.

58 napco? Now that would be cool!!!! If you end up getting it then you gotta post pics!!

I'll post some up of the 58 sometime soon. I'm getting ready for a promotional exam for the next 3 weeks, so I'll be here minimally till then. Oh and then our Death Valley trip after that. Thanks for the materials list!

Nice job on the bed floor.

I have two 65's, Maybe one day Ill get some work done on them. The better of the two is on a 91 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban frame.

Got a little more work done. When I got the truck less than half of the acc. worked. I basically had to rewire the whole truck. I got everything with the exception of the heater working. Dont know what Im gonna do on that being how the truck is a factory AC truck. Was thinking about ripping all the AC out but havent decided yet.

Anyways, while I had the instrament panel out I gave it a white face look with some white paint. Threw in some auto meter gauges also.

LOTS to go-52" swap, shackle flip, crossover, rear discs, traction devices, gears, enlarge fender openings, paint&body, finish body mounts, bumpers, bedfloor, etc, then decide on tires and wheels- Either Q78 swampers OR 38x11 boggers on stock steel OR Hummer locks

Nice! Ive always preferred the GMC's over the chevy's. Love the 4 headlights and the GMC hood. Sounds like it should be pretty cool when its done.

The transfer case in the truck hung way low so I decided to move it up. I did this because the output on the tranny was 4-5 inches higher then the input on the transfer case causing a horrible vibration. That and the fact that the transfer case just hung too low. I could of clocked it up for more front driveline clearance but decided this was gonna be good enough.

Moving the ftansfer case up required me to route the passengers side exhaust differently. The factory 2wd crossmember was still mounted behind the transfer case and the exhaust had to go right through it. I decided to cut it out completely. That was fine cause the exhaust was ran under it and hung too low anyway. With the crossmember cut out I cut the exhaust and rotated the mufflers up from beneath the frame where it hung for alot better and cleaner look.

:smokin: I like the title "66 fix". You gotta love what 40+ years of previous owners have screwed up. Nice work on the bed, xfer case, and steering box. I had a 76 stepside with the wooden bed, they look good, but you gotta keep them sealed or they rot pretty quick.

Keep on truckin'

Thanks guys for all the compliments. I havent touched the truck latelt mainly because I just have too many other projects. That and Ive been trying to buy as many guns as possible before Obama screws us. Anyways, maybe when the snow melts Ill get back to working on it.

It is a 67 firebird. I picked that one up about 6 months ago in a trade. Its a pretty nice car but I already have onother 67 firebird so the red one is gonna go up for sale most likely in the summer. Either that or I just might use it for a daily driver. Ill have to find the other pics and post them up but for now this is the only pic I can find of it.

I also noticed the firebird, you can tell its a 67 cuz it doesnt have the pontiac shaped rear side turn signals. By the hood looks like a 400 car? Got any pics? I've got a 68 firebird, all original numbers matching 350 auto,a/c. Needs alot of work hasnt been registered since 97. Inherited it from my father who was the second owner and bought it in the early 70's. 63k original miles on it. Anyways...awesome truck I've always liked that body style. I'll continue watching this thread.

Thanks man. Hopefully the firebird will have a new owner tomorrow. I just dont have the extra time or money for it. Plus...........I have another 67 400 firebird that Ive had for almost 20 years. The truck is unfortunaly dead in the driveway from a fried starter. Maybe when it warms up Ill put a new one in it. Anyways, 1 more pic of the firebird.

How much clearance do you have between your front driveshaft and Tranny cross member? It looks like It may hit but I suppose leafs dont flex that much

But Other wise it is really looking good.

Thats the truth! I figure the spring would have to compress at least 6 inches before the d-line hits the crossmember. 12 in superlifts..........yeah right!!! lol.
