John James wrote about Toyota Super Birfields from Bobby Long, I have a 1988 4Runner v6 with independent front suspension. I have the Porsche 930 turbo joints on the differential from Rockstomper.com and that solved that problem but I was still breaking birfields, so I contacted Bobby.

Bobby told me to send him a pair and he would fix them up for me, he said that he had done a pair before and so far they have not broken.

Bobby does the same heat treating on these joints as he does on the 79-85 birfield joint but doesn’t put the outer ring on as this would prohibit putting the boot on, but the housing is thicker on the later ones therefore it isn’t necessary.

He only asks for $100 each for the mod and says if you break it just send him another joint and he will mod it for free, what a deal.

Neil Stevens.

I think the point is that Bobby Long will do up some good stuff for other rigs besides solid axle toys if you ask nicely? That's nice to know.

Psst... don't call them birfields. The joints in IFS axles are simply called "CV Joints:.... Around most BBS's they'll think you're referring to a solid axle's birfield joint when you say birfield.

Oh, and you're making the biggest mistake later model toy wheelers make. Putting too much $$$ into the IFS makes it painful to the wallet when you torch it off later.

 newbies calling out other newbies...

I'm interested, and if he can make the CV joints last longer for $100, I'm game. At $30 plus shipping each for the stockers, it *might* be worth it.

Hmmm...rereading your post, does he modify the Porsche joints, or the Toy joints? If he doesn't do the Toy joints, then this IS a waste of bandwidth, since only 2 people in the world have run the Porsche joints (Neil, and Scott). And Scott went solid axle :p
