DJ404564X4 10-28-2008, 07:26 PM what have you done? looking for a way to attach some sort of top mounting system for limiting straps. lot of tin up top not much to connect them to.
pictures or links would be great.
yes i searched.
thanks

WilBadger 10-28-2008, 07:37 PM I have seen a good deal of people use the old upper control arm mount then weld a tab on the new control arm.
David Taylor 10-28-2008, 08:17 PM Just weld a short bolt to the frame. It will hold.
J10495T 10-29-2008, 06:33 AM I connected mine from the motor mount down to the upper control arm mounts on both sides. Seems to work fine and requires no modification.
Just be sure to measure correctly in how long of a strap you will need.
Thanks,
Jay
Evergreen12 10-29-2008, 10:03 AM Here's how I did it when I had my XJ. I Welded a plate to the "frame" and then used the clevis mounts that are designed for limit straps, fabbed up some stand-offs and welded them to the plate. That way I had some adjustability to fine tune the length. The straps will stretch. At the axle end they are bolted to the sway bar mounts.

gg's cj5 10-29-2008, 09:16 PM Shouldent u be worrying about a diff instead?:flipoff2: i like evergreen's setup clean and u can adjust it when the straps stretch. Too mutch work though ill just use the industrial zip tyes.:D
AndrewCote 10-29-2008, 09:24 PM Why would you need limiting straps? Too much flex?
bombproof11 10-29-2008, 09:32 PM yes too much flex and a lot of the times your coil will fall out
DJ404564X4 10-29-2008, 09:33 PM Why would you need limiting straps? Too much flex?
correct, it will also keep my shocks from fully extending. it's my wife's daily driver slash wanna be Jeep speed on the weekends.

To keep from ruining your shocks if you haul ass much. Most important whne you have nice shocks.
Limit straps also work well to limit unloading on steep climbs.
I welded a tab with a 1/2" hole to a small section of plate, then welded the plate to the bottom of the frame. Pretty easy. Do you want a center limit strap for trail work, or regular outside limit straps for fast stuff? I run both types, to the center on the XJ and on the outsides on the buggy.

Caper 10-30-2008, 12:23 AM I use small diameter aircraft cable with downsized clamps. (same as making a loop for a winch hook.)
make a loop on both ends of the wire, and make it a bit shorter than the full length of the shock.
upper loop goes under the shock bushing, above the welded on washer. (still the stem style shock on the front of your rig?)
on the bottom, put the dogbone thru the loop.
Its really cheap. works pretty good. I have broken a clamp or two, get a size bigger clamp than you think you need. iirc i used 1/8 wire rope and it was fine, but the cheezy little clamps didn't hold up. I just just got bigger ones.
Stumpalump 10-30-2008, 10:59 AM I had an ACOS that I wasn't using. I removed the adjusting coller and installed the spring. Then I installed the adjusting coller to clamp the top of the spring to the top bucket. Basically instead of the adjuster coller pushing down on the spring now it's clamping the spring to the top. I reinforced my lower spring mount. Now basically my spring is firmly bolted to the top and bottom. Stiff Deaver coil on 35's. It's perfect for what I run. If I need max flex the spring will pull apart quite a bit and max out the shock but if I pop the front end in the air or unload then the two springs limit the drop.
Starboard M 10-30-2008, 11:33 AM I used old seat belts and some 1/4'' plate

Yeah, and this thing. Both have front limiting straps connected in the same way at the top, to a tab welded to the bottom of the frame. The XJ's straps go to the center of the axle, the buggy's go to each side.

Curt's_97 10-30-2008, 05:10 PM Probably a little ghetto for ya but bump stops and a seat belt has been working for me. LOL

WOW that looks scary
pipehitter155 10-30-2008, 08:26 PM it's a limiting strap on a jeep not a part for the space shuttle....:flipoff2:
Okie Terry 10-30-2008, 08:52 PM Really, mine are pro comp even.
Not nasa approved.:D
Okie Terry 11-01-2008, 01:13 PM Here's my non-NASA approved strap setup.
The top of the straps are attatched to the frame side of the motor mount.
I adjusted them one twist at a time, until my springs stopped falling out.

If you have a shaft running through your springs they don't fall out. :flipoff2:
Okie Terry 11-01-2008, 02:06 PM Yeah yeah, I know... :flipoff2:
Someday I'll get the shaft.:D
