What carb are you running on your 345 and are you happy with it's off road performance? I've got a Holley DP spread bore now.... should I ditch it and go with something else? if so, what?

Well, I don't have a 345..but still:

I have an Edelbrock 600. I added the offroad needles to it and then did the Scoutilliac block off trick inside....It works great now...no Q-Jet for me.:)

I running the stock Holley 2300 on the 345, work's great. No problem on side hills or descents. It'll load up on steeeeeeeeep climbs if I let it idle.

I'm running a new Edelbrock Q-jet #1904, and have not had any problems.....stock out of the box! It performed great on the Ruby with no problems with angles.

Mark,
Throttle body injection is next.... I am gathering the parts for it now. In the meantime, I will run the 4bbl. I just need to figure out if I should rebuild the Holley that's on there now or pick up something else from the junkyard and rebuild it.

Holley :barf: (well the 4-barrels)

both me and my brother messed with holleys on our IH's.... never worked well. I stole his pro-jection (again holley :barf:) and he ended up buying a new carter afb, worked great out of the box, pretty damn good off road as well...

Scoutillac knows some tricks for it.... I would seriously think about one if I went back to a carb... probably the race truck.

now on a steet rig..... Holley makes some serious power...................................

There are tons and tons of 4bbl Rochester Q-jets in my favorite junkyard. Are they even worth messing with? I've run several in my younger days on street machines with sbc's but now I'm talking IH and off road. So what's the consensus?

You can get it to work better by downsizing the jets drasticly, but you will loose top end performance. You really need a hollet TBI :flipoff2:

I have a 304 and run a 4412 with a whistle baffle and a hose connected to the vent tube that goes to the canister.

I swear that carb runs upside down.

Winching up the first fall in Surprise Canyon after El Nino I was on my side and going past 90 deg on my side. That's when the motor oil started following Newton's Law. Let's say the canyon was filling with smoke and the engine was idling just fine.

Then there's the time coming off the slabs past Big Sluice...

My opinion on qjets is they suck ass on the street/strip. They are however, the only 4bbl carb I'll ever run offroad. Put it on backwards and tune it and forget it. Bout the only time you'll ever starve it then is going downhill.

I have been running a GM Q-jet off of a 1979 Caddy 425 for about 3 years with no problems. I love the Q-jets for wheeling. I ran a 600 CFM Eldebrok with the off road kit and hated it off road on road it was great. I will have to try Scoutillac trick on that carb since it now on my 72 1210's 345.

Went to U-Wrench-It (our version of PnP) this weekend and somebody has gone through there and pulled every Q-jet off of every GM out there. Well almost, I did find 3 Q-jets that were unmolested, but all 3 of them were the later electronic versions. All of older style carbs were scarfed up by the vultures I guess. Have to look elsewhere for one now.

We did find a HD 10-bolt with 8 lug outers in 3/4T Chevy and a '76 Blazer w/ D44 front was nice enough to provide me with a small bearing spindle and another passenger side flattop. I might go back for whats left of the axle since it has 0.5" wall tubes. Also scored a throttle body off of a GM full sized van. Now I just need to convert my dist. and get a 2bbl manifold for my 345 and I can start the EFI project.
