: Dumb down this whole side by side thing for me

I/we want one. I have driven the Rhino and sat in the RZR. I'm female so too many options confuse me even more. I am blinded by pretty and shiney. So, I need someone to dumb down the pratical side of these things for me. Here is what I know:

~I like the way the RZR sat versus the Rhino.

~The Rhino is kind of a dog as far as power. It sound like it is just going to wind out too much one day and just explode, not to mention I felt like it was going to rattle apart.

~I liked the instrument panel of the Rhino. The RZR seemed very stark. I told you I was blinded by pretty and shiney

~I really don't want one in red or green. I would prefer black. And yes, I know this can be changed.

Now, as far as using it...

~We live in Colorado and will take it on trails here.

~We also go to the Hammers quite a bit

~I don't expect to rock crawl with it, but I would like it to handle a trail decently

~I want to go fast. :D

So, fire away and thanks for the help/advice! :roxy:

There is no "perfect" choice.

For a completely stock unit, the 2009 Polaris RZR S (http://www.utvguide.net/polaris_rzr_s_review.htm) is hard to beat, but it does come in at $13,999. It is fast, has long travel and a lower CG than the Rhino or Teryx. The nice part about the RZR S vs. the standard RZR is more ground clearance (due to long travel and 26" Bighorns). I would classify the RZR as all sport. Of the three, the RZR has the weakest frame, but the lightest dry weight. If you have an issue with 50" wide trails, the RZR S will not fit.

The 700 EFI Rhino is a nice choice, but I too like to go fast and I think a twin cylinder is better suited. I have taken my Rhino on the Barret Lake (http://www.utvguide.net/trip_report_barrett_lake_2007.htm) and to Rubicon (http://www.utvguide.net/trip_report_utv_rubicon_run_2007.htm) and it did well. Not sure how long any of them would do with any long term pounding.

The one UTV you did not mention is the Kawaski Teryx (http://www.utvguide.net/kawasaki_teryx.htm). Most of my complaints for the 2008 model are addressed for 2009 (EFI, Fuel Gauge). The biggest drawback to the Teryx now is weight. Of the three, the Teryx has the most potential for engine performance work.

The Rhino & Teryx are more sport/utility. They have a large enough bed where you can throw some camping gear in a spent a few nights out in the wilderness. While you can do that with a RZR, it is harder to do with a smaller bed.

If you are going to spend much time playing around rocks, I would look into a UHMW skid plate for the one you choose.

Here is a little more side x side analysis (http://www.utvguide.net/utv_comparison.htm).

UTVs are a lot of fun. Good luck!

Roxy,

Listen to what John says, he knows his stuff...

I will add that having seen the RZR and RZR-s rock crawl, with the right protection either one would be hard to beat.

Thanks for the great comparison. That helps a lot. I'm way too ADD to research all of those details and then compare them myself  The RZR-S looks/sounds nice. I guess when Robert comes home on R & R we will just need to go look at all of them. This is his new obsession for this deployment. He is hell bent on buying one.

Would you say that its better to buy something like the RZR-S that is already set up or to buy something lesser and build it yourself? I see can this turning into another very expensive hobby  :roxy:

Of the units mentioned, I like the Polaris way more. If you want to keep the initial buy in down, look at the ranger. Little less "sporty", if that is the right word, but from what I have seen they are faster in stock form.

I would find a few people that you can talk (you are persuasive, right :roxy:), and see the differences for yourself.

If you are going to add long travel to a standard RZR, you are looking at $4k - $7k. The RZR S comes with it from the factory for about $3k, plus you get better tires and a higher output engine.

The aftermarket long travel kits will typically be better than the factory, but I was very impressed with the RZR S I drove in the dunes (put about 50 miles on it).

Ok, I thought the long travel kits were pretty expensive. I remember Robert showing me something about them and the cost being over $4000 and I just laughed at him and reminded him that we don't even have that into our 4Runner  :roxy:

Robert has driven a Polaris, which is what started all of this. When he comes home from Iraq on R&R he'll be able to drive the Rhino here at the campgrounds and can make his comparison between those 2. I'm sure there will be a few different ones at KOH and maybe I can beg people to let me drive theirs. :roxy:

I'll chime in but I'm no expert on these things. I ride a Polaris Ranger at work and I think they are pretty good performance wise but we have had to take it to the shop a lot. It's like a year old and have had front cv shafts replaced and the clutch, along with some other small things. The polaris rattles a lot and is really noisy.

you seem awfully concerned with your sxs going fast... you do realize that even the tricked out long arm fully fabbed big motor racer SXS are relatively slow.. right ?

buy one because they are fun, cute , cool...but not because they are FAST

how much front and rear wheel travel does that RZR S have ?

speed in the dirt is relative to available wheel travel.

Jeepspeed doing 80mph with 10" of travel seems VERY fast and makes you pay attention.

Trophy Truck with 32" of travel doing 80mph over the same terrain will lull you to sleep.

A tricked race Rhino doing 50mph over the same section usually results in a wheel shearing off

Roxy,
Keep an eye under the local Craigs List also. I see them there for under $9000 and most are about 2 yrs old. I saw a ranger in the Co. Springs area CL for $7500 a month back, only had 84 hrs on it and looked brand new, with winch & all the goods. I almost drove down to get it, but called and it was sold already....:(

if you end up with the RZR you can pick up a couple of MPH on the topend by removing the plastic spacer in the primary clutch. The spacer keeps the halves of the Primary from getting close enough to allow the belt to run all the way out at the edge of the sheave...

This RZR runs about 62mph and is running average race speeds that are very close to the production suv's and trucks in BITD and not far off the Jeepspeeds either. at the Blue Water GP we beat all but 2 of tht new trophy Lite trucks which are boasting 200 hp. But the UTV class is not and never will be a "fast Class" in the desert. Any way that's a cool pic.

Hey Roxy,
If you are thinking about the RZR-S you will not be disapointed. They seem quite a bit quieter than the Rhino mailnly becasue of the engine design. (twin Vs Single Cyl) check out our website and take alook at the galleries http://jaggedx.com/gallery2/main.php/v/RZR/ These are just some of the custom RZR's we have built so if bling is your thing we have your ticket.
If you just have questions, feel free to call the shop, we will be happy to help you with anything you need. We are an aftermarket parner with Polaris but have tons of experience with all brands and models. Good luck and have fun.

I am a FNG here but know abit about SXS's...I know you mentioned the Poolaris RZR which CrowDog is right, the RZRs is the best SXS out of box in terms of power and travel. I own a LT rhino, does about 56 mph on flat hard pack desert like Occotillo Wells with a minimum ammount of modifications. On top of that it has a claimed 14" of travel by the company I got my LT kit from. The LT kits are expensive but are dropping. You could probably find one in the $3500 range with Shocks, Axles, and Hardware.

But if you can do it right from the start them get the Kawi Teyrx.......Best SXS out of ox, you get the power of a RZR and the size and versatlity of a RHino!

JUst the FNG's opinion.....

Roxy - I have a '08 Kawi Teryx, out of the box it does 42MPH (limiter) add a $200 CDI and it does 62MPH on hard pack. The Kawi is heavy, but the engine does not lack. Crawls great and will move when you need it. The added width (over a Rhino) adds more stability. I made mine a four seater and w/600lbs of poeple (200 each up front; 50 lb kid and 110 lb wife in back) it still does 60MPH and rides great on stock suspension. You can find some incredible deals on the '08 models (carb not FI), around $8k OTD
