: 2-new scouts, aka, how to load a scout.
larboc@hotmail.com 10-30-2008, 09:22 PM Mad a purchase today, a half cab 80, and a full cab 800. Got the 800, motor purrs like kitten. need a carb, pump, and cmc for the half cab. prolly gonna part out the 800 for parts for my old mans scout, but I think I may have to fix up the 80.
here's how we loaded the both of them. Nice to have friends at the yards.

RustoleumWhite 10-30-2008, 10:35 PM Put a winch on your trailer. You can get a Smitty 8K for under 3 bones to your door if you watch for the sales. And I can personally vouch as of after yesterday that it has plenty of balls to pull a dead 1210 with semi-flat tires up on to a trailer with ramps made of 4x8's that stopped about 6" under the trailer deck :D
beats the HELL out of the 1500 and 2K units I had before that "got the job done", but didn't really like it.
larboc@hotmail.com 10-31-2008, 08:10 AM I've got a superwinch 2k that i bought a year ago. It got left in the rain and now doesn't work unless you smack it, and even then is down on power. I've got to check the brushes one of these days.
I'll bet even your 8k smitty doesn't have enough power to toss a scout into orbit like the slasher does. :D
Mechanos 10-31-2008, 08:30 AM If you were referring the SII doing the towing, you'd have to change the title of this thread to "How NOT to load a Scout".
larboc@hotmail.com 10-31-2008, 08:42 AM I'm towing with it right past you mech. Towing with the Scout II from 49955 to 67301.
From the u.p. of michigan(north of wisconsin) to duluth, to des moines, to kansas city, to almost the OK boarder.
Leaving the 20th of november.
1980 towing that trailer with the 80 pickup on it. The 345 barley even knows it's back there. I towed those scouts about 20 miles from the scrap yard to our "scrap" yard yesterday, felt fine.
towed allot easier than this of 5 firewood loads, and even they wern't bad. The ole 345EFI just sounds like its raking hay and keeps right on pullin.

The winch that originally came on my trailer (and I used for years) was/is a Superwinch 1500. Thing actually pulled much harder than it should have. I was always too lazy to double line it, probably would have make it work better. Spend many years outside in the rain as well, but the weather has started to get to it, so I retired it and "upgraded" to a HF 2K unit (hey, it was $50). Didn't pull nearly as hard, but hey, I'll find other used for it (probably bolt it to the floor in the garage for pulling junk inside, or suck-down winch).
The Smitty I should have done YEARS ago, no comparison. Built a receiver mount for it as well so its mobile, and can be stored inside for security and help it weather better.
True, it ain't as good as a scrap loader... always wanted to run one of those. To work in a junk yard for a day/week.... I could see that to be fun. Probably suck as a long term career (and I'd probably have WAY too much cra..... er.... good stuff at the house... more than I already do LOL), but it would sure be fun to crush and toss stuff around with big equipment now and again :D:D

Classic statement from the uninformed/delusional. I never questioned the muscle of your SII's engine. Duh... that engine was used in many many trucks MUCH larger than an SII. The suspension on the SII, however, is marginal at best and the brakes are substandard at best. Towing has little to do with whether or not the engine is working hard and has a LOT to do with a suspension capable of handling and controlling the load and brakes that are capable of stopping the load.
Those Set10's in the rear axle are not really up to task either and the wheelbase is too short as well.
budget76 10-31-2008, 12:37 PM Bastid:flipoff2: I've been trying to find a cheap 80/800 to build up as a budget wheeler. Saw them all last year when I still had my scout, now that I sold it all the cheap trucks are gone:(

I've good trailer brakes, and as far as towing characteristics, it handled great pulling these back.
As far as the set 10's go, as long as I only have 400lbs or so on the ball, what's the difference?

One of these days you will discover the answer to your questions..... the hard way. It's obvious you're hard-headed and will do it your way. Go ahead and maybe you will learn from your mistakes instead of learning from the mistakes others have already made.
larboc@hotmail.com 10-31-2008, 11:03 PM Easy now mech, I've towed with a proper tow rig. my dad's c25 6.5TD tows great.
put yourself in my situation, renting a house with 7 other college (age) people, I have an s10, a scout 80, a scout 800, a 1980 scout, a big dumb incomplete 1975 scout, a trailer, a boat, snowmobile, and 3 dirt bikes. Everybody else has at least 3 vehicles or trailers too.
I'm needing to/want to start moving some stuff south if I don't need it up here. I'm going home for thanksgiving break and the weather is usually bad up here by the time i get back if not when I leave so I don't have to plan on driving the s10 back up, or drive it in the winter since it's 2wd and rust and dent free.
I've got a tag for an s10 and a tag for a scout so I have to choose how to get back and what to take.
Kind of looking forward to the trip as an adventure, we'll see what it really turns out to be. Soo, should I take some spare shafts with bearings on them, buy new set10's, or what?
What ever I take I'd like to have it running too so worst case I can limp home. Picture the '67 800 towing the scout II and a couple dirt bikes on a full size car trailer. 30mph from the 152? scarry, but it would work.
o, and btw, i'm dirt poor. my $.08 per pound scout II is the closest thing I have to a tow rig.
Hubbler 11-03-2008, 09:10 AM Not to Shabby paul. Glad to see the prime jackassery is in full use! oh btw, Im puttin that supercharger to good use!:flipoff2:
