I have worked on cars and trucks for a while but normally it was fixing what was broken. I know how to rebuild a motor and that is not the question. I have a 88 f250 work truck with a 351w in it. I work on the road and am home one week out of every 2 months. I would like to get another core engine to rebuild when I get back one week and then have another week 2 months later to swap it in but I am not sure what will swap over from my efi 351w to another 351w long block. I also don't know what years would be compatible with it. Can any of you guys point me in the right direction to find out or if someone knows that would be great. Thank for your help.

Your EFI stuff is pretty much useable 88-97, but, the 84-87 351 HO's(4bbl equipped) have the same cam and heads as the EFI engines, so, with a front cover swap to fit the EFI water pump, they will work perfectly fine as a long block. If the cam is different, it's close enough that the speed density computer doesn't notice it. Most desireable would be a 93(IIRC) + roller cam prepped block.

i only use it as a stock tow pig and plan to build it from top to bottom as a stock motor so a roller block isn't a big deal to me. If I want to be able to do a complete swap with only minor details on the engine changed I would have to have a 88-97? Is there any major changes from OBD0 to OBD1 or OBD2? Thanks again.

If you stay with an over 8500 GVWR donor, there are no major changes(49 state, no experience with a Cali truck) just some differences in the thermactor air piping. I recently helped a friend put an 88 engine into a 91, and that was all that we had to deal with. I think we even used the 88 engine harness that came with the JY engine if memory serves.
