: '85 4Runner - High Pinion or not to High Pinion
Yardsale 08-09-2002, 07:27 PM I am working on getting my suspension done - 2" OME and replacing the 3rd with the V-6 and 4.88. I have a decision to make - high pinion or not.
Any thoughts on benefits, front and or rear, clearance issues, pros and cons?
Thanks,
Y
2stroke 08-09-2002, 08:08 PM not worth the $$. unless u have too much of it!!
I had OME springs on my '84 with a hi pinion e-locker in the front, my driveshaft was pretty much level. I could drive all day at highway speed with the hubs locked, no vibration in the wheel at all.
Tenn Twister 08-09-2002, 10:28 PM Get'em both an have a spare. Its just $$$$ :D
v6toy4x 08-17-2002, 06:36 PM if you go with a e-locker assy qwith stock 4.10:1 gears it really isn't that much sterling mcall toyota has the entire assy for $747.92. if you price out an arb assy and bearings the e-locker gives you the hi-pinion for free
Yotaonly 08-17-2002, 07:10 PM The high pinion is a lot stronger and easier on the gears. The pinion pushes on the drive side instead of the coast side, but thats just in the front, the rear should be a standard low pinion. If your not wheeling hard, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but a HP e-locking third isn't much more than a standard third w/e-locker, so, I'd definitely get a HP for the front if I were you.
OOP'S 08-17-2002, 09:46 PM This is for the front right, you can not use a hy-pinion in the rear, they break.:D
megaman 08-17-2002, 11:55 PM i just got my hi pinion e-locker this week, the down side is that if the locker breaks u cant swap out the third member because of the modified housing, but they do come with a warranty, i got mine from Marlin for $765 and R/C gears for cheap from a friend. im glad i spent the xtra $ to get it,
locrwln 08-18-2002, 07:44 AM I have one and like the "thought" of the extra strength and my driveshaft angle. I also like the extra driveshaft height/clearance up front. Would I recommend it-it's kinda one of those personal preference things. I like mine but what do I know.

if you don't weld up the unused stud holes you can slip a std 3rd back in if you need to you just won't have all the studs but it should work
SeaBass44 08-18-2002, 11:21 AM I say yes, the clerence is highly recomended:D
Yardsale 08-19-2002, 07:32 PM Okay, so that's 50/50 on the front HP and not necessary (and possibly weaker) in the rear.
The cost difference is minimal, so why not.
Thanks a bunch!
Yotaonly 08-19-2002, 07:43 PM Pretty much, but DO NOT put a HP is the rear(unless you have severe driveline angle problems), put one in front and it'll work great.
Yardsale 08-23-2002, 04:12 PM Gotcha - thanks jesselt!
