I've got a 1975 CJ5 that i'm looking to convert to a wide axle setup, i just recently broke my Dana 30 front axle, and have a Dana 44 with Locker, 5.13 gears, disc brakes, chromeoly shafts, and a few other parts lined up, and i need some advice about what would match up nicely in the back. I was thinking maybe a Ford 9" but not sure what gears to go with, or any of the details. Any advice is appreciated.

How wide is your 44? If full width look at a 9" or a 60. If not, look at 8.8's or waggy 44's.
For gears 5.13's are prolly plenty but provide a lil more info.
Like motor/tranny/t-case and tire size. Then we can help more.

It is full width, motor is an AMC 401, tranny is stock 3 spd for now, planning on going with a TH400 in the near future, t-case is the stock dana 20 and running 35's atm.

the nine inch has alot of aftermarkt for nearly anything like high pinion centers for it and so on, waggy 44s are good to, the nine inch be old school

Unless you want to spend big bucks on a Tru-Hi 9 a regular 9" will have the lowest pinion available. I would look for a Dana 60 or 70. A well built would probably hold up well, but they can be difficult to find. If you want the cheapest option swap the Dana 44 to 8 lug and buy a 14 bolt. You can shave it to gain clearance.

I agree with the post above. Also you will most likely have some problems putting a t400 in a cj5. T400 is 23.75" long, then your adapter and transfer case. All this = a real short rear driveshaft. And a small diameter long front driveshaft. Unless you intend on lengthening the wheelbase when you put in the new axles. My.02

my plan is to lengthen it by about 10 inches. if i go 10 inches in the rear it should give me about a 19" driveshaft if i'm not mistaken. if the t400 would still not be advisable i do not have an issue with dropping down to a t350. only reason i would prefer the 400 is that according to a local transmission shop the 400 bolts up to an AMC 401 easier.

I have a 401 in a 95 wrangler with a turbo 400 and dana 20 .. this combo works well. I run the turbo 400 with the amc housing. There hard to find. I have a spare if interested.
you better be running d60's .. the 401 has tons of torque... and trashes a d44 quickly ..

the 401 i've got in mine is definately able to push a tremendous amount of torque, however right now its running a low compression and is "dialed down" so it doesnt push as much power as it is capable. its been kept pretty close to stock performance which if memory serves me correctly is around 255hp and around 330 ft lb or torque. the axles have held up very well, and the dana 30 up front finally gave up the ghost when a side gear snapped off. the 44 and 9" i'm looking at have both been built very well and could very easily handle the power of a very well built 401. i think the guy i'm buying them from had them under his rig which was powered by a 429 and he wound up replacing them in favor of something bigger and better, but had already put new chromoly shafts, gears, and arb in the 44 ... he built them for another project and changed his mind before he got around to building it.
