89' xj 4.0 sat for a year after wrecked. Got the axles back under it and ready to fire it back up. Got spark and fuel rail has good pressure, but won't run unless starter fluid is sprayed into throttle body. Dropped the tank, new gas and new filter. I figure injectors or fuel regulator on the rail. No one around here works with gas injectors. I don't see how they would all be clogged anyways. Best way to clean them if they are the culprit? Will carb cleaner or berryman's eat up the plastic if I soak them in it? Any good advice or ideas? I searched and really didn't find what I was looking for. thanks.

This is a n00b questions but do yourself a favor and go out and get Ford 5.4L injectors (I think 2003) The injectors from those year XJ's leak around the body and can start fires. (I would know)

Not sure if injectors are your problem but if you are going to replace them you should spend the coin for the ford ones. JP mag. has an article about it too if you want more info.

i've heard of a lot of guys getting injectors from this site:

I picked up that issue of JP mag and read that story. And now I'm a little paranoid. Since I replaced the 90 injectors with some from an 87 parts rig. And the XJ is for my daughter.

Guess I'll be headed for the junkyard for some 5.4 injectors...

Are you sure the injectors are the issue? I recently resolved what turned out to be a fuel delivery issue. I had some pressure at the fuel rail, but not enough to keep the thing running. When I finally pulled the fuel pump, the littl hose inside the tank was rotten and loose on its fittings. Some fuel was getting to the rail and injectros, but nowhere near enough to run it. Replaced the hose and put the pump back in, and full power.

Before I bought this Jeep last December, it sat most of the previous year in a couple different auto auction sites.

I'm buying a pressure gauge, if I'd had one when I started my project I'd have found out I wasn't getting enough fuel. Just saying...

injector cleaner in the fuel, let it run and it will clean them out, the stuff made by pb blast works good, use the full boutl for one take to run it rich with cleaner, makes it so u dont have to take out the injectors and encorage a leak to form, for injectors are nice though anyone now off the top off there head there about price

89' xj ------ Got spark and fuel rail has good pressure, but won't run unless starter fluid is sprayed into throttle body.-----------.

Sounds like injectors are not being energized.
The 4.0's ECM sends 12V pulses to each injector, in a predetermined sequence. One side of all of the injectors are connected together and run to a common ground point.
So check your injector wiring, for a start, and check the voltage on each injector using a "noid" light, or a simple LED test light; you should get blinking as you turn over the engine.
Next, would be to determine what signal is required to tell the ECM to fire the injectors. I'm not sure on the Chrysler FI. The pre-96 GM ECM's look for a pulse from the ignition module.

My XJ died on me driving it and wouldn't start again. I wasn't sure what it could have been. I disconnected the fuel line after the filter and turn the key on acc. Fuel still came out pretty good. I figured it wasn't the fuel pump. Then I check the fuel at the rail...no fuel. I didn't have a fuel pressure gauge and I was driving it for my daily driver at the time so I needed it the next morning. I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump thinking it was the stock pump with 145k on it and couldn't hurt to change it. The hoses within the tank were bad. After I replaced it, it started right up. I haven't had and issue since. I got the fuel pump assembly at Autozone with a year warranty for $130.

don't know if you found the prob or not I jumped my xj when it was stock and the diff hit the bottom of my floor smashing the wire for my fuel lines thought that was the problem but it turns out the positive for the fuel pump was disinigrated at the power distrobution center under the hood once fixed full fuel power was back!!!!
