: School me on 2002 TJ

I am looking at a 2002 TJ. 5sp, 6 cylinder, Dana 44, A/C, CC, 1/2 doors. Very clean. Very clean. Very clean but I have two questions.

1) It does not have a center console/arm rest. It has two cup holders to the rear of the shifter but no raised storage console. Does this make it an X or a Sport or is there any difference.

2) The flares are about 1 inch larger than standard flares and they are a smooth, gloss gray painted finish. They are flexible like the factory flares and appear to attach like the factory flares. Were these a factory option in 04 or do they sound like after-market? I looked under neath them but could not find any markings.

Thanks

It sounds like you have an "X".... basically an SE with the 4.0L. Sports say Sport on the front fender just in front of the doors. The Sport has steps, but they are removed on a regular basis. Flares? How about posting a few photos so we see what you are talking about?

Thanks, this is clearly not a Sport as it does not say Sport and it does not have steps.

I will post pics once I take delivery of it.

I am purchasing it from a dealer. It appears to be all stock except for Alcoa wheels and 31X10.50 BFGs. The only real "accessory" is the factory MOPAR black diamond plate rocker guards. Additionally, it has been wired with a trailer connector so that it can be towed behind an RV.

I crawled under it and can not find a single scratch or dent on the undercarriage. I don't think it has ever been off road... it doesn't even have any dust in the nooks and crannies.

Pull the carpet up... a dealership I was looking at thought they did a great job of cleaning out the jeep to make it appear like it had never been off road. Pulled up the carpet though and found dried sand/mud stains.
An X model usually has a big X in front of the doors near the fender. If you want to know for sure, ask the dealer to run the vin and give you all the info on the jeep.
If it's an X, it'll have the D30/35 combo. If it's standard the gears will be 3.07, I believe autos were 4.10.

My buddy has an 02 with all the same as this one, including the optional d44 but he has a center console. Is it possible that it was removed and not reinstalled, apparently someone has been messing with it.

Pull the carpet up...

I did, totally clean and I know the dealer did not pull it up and clean under it as I found a penny and several Mentos breath mints and a piece of Wheat Chex cereal on the carpeting as I was pulling it up. The PO spilled some time of sticky drink on the carpet behnd the front passenger seat. Looks like it will come out but just more evidence the dealer did not shampoo the carpets.

In the end, I guess it really does not matter if it is a Sport, an SE, or an X because it has all the options and is set up exactly like I would have ordered it.

Checked the VIN - it is an X. I believe it has 3.73 gears as I think those were standard with the D44 option.

X models did not come with a D44 rear, only a D30 front and D35 rear.
The models that had a D44 rear option for that year were the Sport and Sahara (and those were optional, not all sports and sahara's came with them).

IIRC, in 2002 you could order a D44 rear with Canyon wheels as a package on any TJ for $820.00 which was a great deal. I think running a "Build Sheet" or posting some photos will answer all our questions.

Enter your contact information, and the VIN, (skip rest of the information), in the comment box, request a "Build Sheet" for your new Jeep.

In a couple days, you will receive a detailed e-mail telling you how your Jeep was equipped when it rolled off the assembly line.

OK first of all I AM AN IDIOT!.

It is a 2004 not a 2002:shaking:

Sorry guys. I knew that from the start but just got too dang excited about finally getting a Jeep, typed in the wrong year and have read the wrong year eight times over the past two days and just now figured it out.

So the description is the same but it is a 2004 and it definitely has a D44 rear axle. I know the difference between a D35, D44, and D60 but I am sure my credibility is now toast.

Anyway, thanks for all of the good info and the link. I'll get a build sheet and eliminate the guess work.

Sahara flares are smooth and 1" wider than norm TJ flares, also painted same as the fender

Rubicon flares are 1" wider and have more of a glossy look to them as well.

Both a Sahara and a Rubicon would be easy to ID. However, rkwfxd did say the Jeep has black diamond plate rockers..... makes me think someone might have been trying to make a Rubicon clone?

Hmmmm, we may have a winner. Did the 04 Rubicon have diamond plate rockers? Were the 04 Rubicon fenders a drk gun metal grey? The ones on my Jeep are about 1" wider than the standard flares.

Sorry I still don't have pics but I won't actually have the Jeep until Wed at earliest but probably not til Thur afternoon.

Little Jeep is the MAN!

I did a Google Image search and sure enough, the flares on my Jeep are the same as those that came on the Rubicon. Looks like mine were painted though.

Thank you for all the help.

According to the build sheet, it came equipped from the factory with the Slate Gray Rocky Mountain addition. I had never heard of the Rocky Mountain package before.

Again, thanks for the help.

Rocky Mountain was sold North of the Border? Not in the USA.

Rocky Mountain only answers a couple questions.... not all of them.

Hey! Where are my fog lights? It says I have fog lights!

Thanks again Little Jeep. That pretty much describes my Jeep to a T except for the missing fog lights. No biggie, I'm looking to install some KCs down the line.

Thanks again.

Hey no problem on the help..... I learned something new in the process so all is good. The factory fog lights are not cheap to replace. Therefore, when one gets broke, the cheap fix is to simply remove both and call it a day :) I suspect that this is what happened to your lights.

I am not thinking they were never on the jeep as there is no fog light switch on the left stalk. Although I can see one fog light pig tail behind the grill, that is probably pretty standard on all TJs whether they had fogs or not I bet the pig tail is there.

Here's another question for you....

What temp should my stock engine be running? My gage says 210 all the time. Seems a bit warm but it might be necessary for emissions.

Thanks

Good question about the switch...... Build sheet says you had fog lights when Jeep rolled off line. Correct? Why would anyone go to all the work to remove switch? Pigtail is normal. Speaking of normal, 210 is Normal for a Jeep. If you don't run this temp, it causes problems so don't worry about it.

It's hard to notice the fog switch on the column. If you look at the the pole the lights are on, on the left side. Maybe the last 3/4" at the end of that stick, pulls straight out. That's how you turn the fogs on and off.

Temp needle should be pretty much in the middle of your gauge... I believe 210 is about right.

Now that I think about it, Jeffb_79 is totally correct as this is how the fog lights on my WJ work and I think the same column is used in the TJ.

The build sheet says it has the Rocky Mountain Edition on it. The specs for the Rocky Mountain Edition say it includes fog lights. My build sheet does not specifically list fog lights and after double and triple checking there is not a switch on the stalk so I am pretty confident they were never there.

Like before, no biggie, I waited 30 years to finally get a jeep and I am thrilled with the one I have.

So far, without exception, every one I have shown it to who does not know jeeps and the model year changes (TJ to KJ) has asked me if it was an 08 or an 09. They are blown away when I tell them it is an 04 with 55,000 miles.

Gonna be a shame to get it all pin striped out in the desert.:D

Thank you again for all the info and help.

Sounds like you got a pretty sweet Jeep. :smokin:

Why there aren't fog lights maybe a question that we never know the answer to. However, like you said, it really doesn't matter.

Think you like your Jeep now..... wait until the first time you drive it with no top, no doors (if legal in your State).

Have you located a Jeep or 4x4 Club in your area yet?

I hear ya. I have been driving a little Samurai with no doors for a couple of years now. I love the open feeling but that Sami just doesn't cut it on the freeway and in the mountains. Also, if the doors are off, they got to be somewhere else. That is why I specifically wanted 1/2 doors. It is easier to store the soft upper portion and I do not have to re-locate my mirrors like I did on the Sami and would need to do on the jeep.

I have been able to get hooked up with a few other wheelers. I have six buddies with Samis. They all hate me for getting rid of mine. I am also starting to wheel with the Sons of thunder Christen 4X4 club. Additionally, there is a very informal group of wheelers that meet every Wednesday at a local restaurant and plan trips. All good stuff.
