: Cooling 5.7l in FJ40
Keith Envolsen 08-10-2002, 12:56 AM Ohhh... probably the most sought after information in the world of Landcruisers, other than spare parts. Many 350's in various Fj40's out there I know. Who has had great/good cooling from the stock radiator out there that runs a shroud and clutch fan. Who has had to swap out to a custom, etc. to cool their machines? Who runs their Chevota in Phoenix at 100+ deg. with absolutely NO problem?
Hi Keith,
If you check this link, you can see my home made shroud. (the 3rd post)
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=901
I had my cruiser radiator recored to a 5 row by Walt's in Renton, but it still is not "perfect". At low speed 4X climbing the temp still rises.
I run a solid fan as my radiator is only 2 1/2" away from the nose of the water pump (no room for fan clutch)
If you do a search, you'll see what all I went through to get my TBI 350 down from 230+ to a nice 190 now. I'm running a 180 thermostat, probably could go back to the 195. An 18" mech. fan, not clutched, and a homemade shroud around a custom 4 row radiator from JT Outfitters. As for temps around here, well I'm in Louisiana, I'm sure you get the picture. I think the main factor was the radiator. Mine was pretty bad off.
CruiserChris 08-10-2002, 05:54 PM replaced the stock rad with one from an FJ 60 - dont have problems. Have wheeled Moab in the summer - never get above about 210

how hard is it to put a 60 radiator in a 40?
Cloese fit or hatchet job needed?
bennett
CruiserChris 08-11-2002, 10:54 AM pretty close, taller than stock, and I run a tranny cooler in front of the radiator (for the TH350 Auto). Don't have a shroud, or a fan clutch, and the fenders are not cut out either on the inside.

Mustard Dog 08-11-2002, 11:09 AM I'm running a plastic fan made by Flex-Lite, 6 blades, no clutch. It was only $20, and it made a huge difference in cooling. I also run a shroud, oil cooler(jury is still out on that one), and I've cut my inner fenders out;)

Thanks Chris I would appreciate that..

Mark80FJ40 08-11-2002, 07:21 PM I just finished doing some cooling mods on my recently acquired '80 fj40 with a Chevy V8 conversion. It came with two 12" Hayden pusher fans run in reverse with no shroud on a stock 2F radiator. Engine ran real hot, especially when not moving!
I fabricated a shroud out of galvinized sheet metal with openings for the fans (my hands will never be the same). I also removed the fan blades and flipped them, as eventhough they were running in reverse, the blades were pitched to run clockwise. I also went with a 160° thermostat. Have yet to see it go above 200 even when idling for 20-30 minutes. Making sure the radiator is in good shape is very important.
I was kind of disappointed when I discovered I did not need 4 gallons of coolant. I sometimes miss the old 2F.

coyote 08-12-2002, 07:59 PM Chris...nice picture's....but when you installed it did you just fab new brackets or did you use the existing as I know the 60 is wider and have thought about how to complete this after my 4 row stock wouldn't work...did you mount it using the stock 60 mounts....if you could snap a few of the mounts or let us know from your experience that would be great...
Mr McGee 08-12-2002, 08:06 PM hey dude i cant get the first pic to work.....
looks "cool" tho :D

CruiserChris 08-12-2002, 08:26 PM Here are some more pics -
I believe it has the 60 brackets mounted to the frame at the base of the radiator (a P.O. modification). Its a bit jerry-rigged at the top, but its held through a ton of wheeling and we have had no overheating problems :nuke: (except when the fan belt broke from the siezed alternator....but that's another story)

Keith Envolsen 08-12-2002, 10:20 PM Okay. I am running a stock radiator for a 40 series. I am using a shroud that a HVAC sheetmetal shop made up for me. The shroud is nice, the fan is a clutch 18.5". The problem hasn't been while idling, or driving on level ground. The problem arises under driving up hills on the highway, or heavy, heavy acceleration up hills and long grades. Thought that if the temp will rise on a hill in Washington on a 70 degree day, I might have a problem if going cross country. I am going to look into the 60 series rad. setup. The stock thermostat for the TPI 350 is 195 degrees. Anyone know of a "drop in" 4-5 core radiator? The fan shouldn't matter much at 55+ MPH right? You have air across from the speed you are traveling at.... Fan should be for idle like conditions I was under the assumption. Keith
arndog 08-13-2002, 05:55 AM mine gets a little toasty going uphills as well. Only place it really happens going up snoqualmie but im sure the other passes would do it as well. I am running the alum. rad and a black magic.
Although Im running the aluminum I am convinced the capacity isn't enough.

fjcruiser 08-13-2002, 10:09 AM What do you guys think about either one of these radiators:

coyote 08-13-2002, 08:16 PM CruiserChris, Sorry its time to play 20 Questions if you don't mind
1. Did you reuse the front radiator mesh protector?
2. Did you custom make the front mounts from the frame to the OEM supports?
3. Who did you source the mounts from? Spectre??? not critical
4. On a FJ60 radiator is their a mounting frame similar to a 40 or is it all molded together?
5. Anybody know much about the shroud and fan dimensions that it will allow?
6. Can you put dimensions to the picture you posted on a 60 radiator?
I owe you a  big time....many thanks....
CruiserChris 08-14-2002, 08:03 PM First, this is a P.O. mod - so I don't know everything, but Ill give you my best guess
1. Did you reuse the front radiator mesh protector?
-no, don't think so , have a wire grill in front of the tranny cooler (17inch wide) which sits in front of the Radiator. In between that and the radiator is a larger protective grating that is roughly the same size as the radiator (dimensions below)
2. Did you custom make the front mounts from the frame to the OEM supports?
I didn't
Althought, it looks fairly simple (2 main pieces)
First - The housing that the stock radiator slides into is removed
Piece 1)
..___
/......\ (upside down and flattened U) shaped bracket welded to both sides of the frame to give it the right height
Piece 2)
L-Shaped bracket attaching to bottom/side of radator with 4 bolts (looks OEM). The bottom of the L bracket is attached perpendicularly to the bracked welded to the frame with a single large bolt/washer combo with bushing on either side to allow for flex-movement. Fits neatly between the frame
The top is attached through the mounting holes on the radiator to the front (top) of the bib with wire/zip. Yeah, that's a bit weak.
3. Who did you source the mounts from? Spectre??? not critical
- good, haven't a clue
4. On a FJ60 radiator is their a mounting frame similar to a 40 or is it all molded together?
See links for pictures - in this application it isn't in a mounting frame. Its mounted solidly at the bottom, with the top more just to make sure it doesnt fall back into the fan/engine. We'll have to hear from a 60 owner to see if its in a frame in a 60.
That said, the radiator width begins to encroach on the inside of the headlights, so any mounting frame would probably be an issue.
5. Anybody know much about the shroud and fan dimensions that it will allow?
- I don't use shroud. Mech 7 blade fan 18 inches in diameter
6. Can you put dimensions to the picture you posted on a 60 radiator?
20 1/4 inches tall
26 1/4 inches wide
3/14 inches deep
- due to the height, the top of the radiator sticks up 3.25 inches above the top of the bib. Hood closes fine
So, for perspective,
stock 40 radiator = 17*22=374 sq inches,
60 radiator = 26*20=520 sq inches or 40% more betta!!
Straight 6 to V8 = 33% more - simple but maybe it makes sense:rolleyes:
Hope this helps
Chris
CruiserChris 08-14-2002, 08:08 PM Oh yeah, and the bezel's on upside down :flipoff:
Chris
calfj60 08-14-2002, 08:41 PM The 60 series radiator has a mounting flange built in. The radiator just bolts to the core support using small bolts. I have a 60 series radiator and shord that someone can buy if they are interested. I pulled all my stock cooling stuff out and am going to run a full size alumiuim radiator and a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan in both my 60 with a TBI 350 and my Pig with a old 350. Hope that helps a little. Later
coyote 08-14-2002, 08:49 PM How much do you want for the radiator and shroud? Are you willing to include the lower mounts...is the core any good?

19x26 griffin should be groovy. I run a 19x26 howe and NEVER get over 201*. My fans come on @ 200*. I have flex-a-junk daul 12" fan with a single shroud.
Halyourpal 08-19-2002, 10:08 PM I'm running tbi 350, at first I was over heating 210-240 at idle. So I went to a radiator shop to have them give me some ideas. I took the radiator out they measured it and said that the volume of the stock radiator should be plenty to cool the 350. he put it on the test cell and found that it only had 13 gpm flow so they cleaned it out. Then there was 27gpm flow. I put it back in with a 160 thermostat and it will not get above 180 towing a buddies car (on a trailer) at 100* out side temp. Now I have to buy a 180 thermostat to get the temp UP. Maybe go that route first... it worked for me.
I have to say I haven’t done any serious wheeling YET!!
o'ya I'm running a 16" electric imperial (no shroud)
fjcruiser 08-27-2002, 08:05 AM I threw that Summit 19x25 n change in my cruiser last wed., drove to Norman in an hour 45 :) and never got over 200!!
Before I was hittin 230 and limiting my speed so I wouldnt overheat now it seems unlimited! I also put a 17" flex fan and made a shroud outa steel.
Eskimo 08-27-2002, 08:31 AM That flex fan probably had a TON to do with the cooling fix..and that $$ rad!
Seems the mechanical fan guys never have a problem with highway cooling, just low-speed.
Us electric fan guys are exactly the opposite...
Woody fixed both...pusher electric and puller mechanical!
I don't have the room for a mechanical fan... so I'm fawked.
