: SEMA Tacoma Concept - 4 cyl, solid axle

Just for fun - found this on AutoBlog. I understand the economics of why they don't make this a production vehicle, but it sure makes me sad - "A four-cylinder engine is mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system (4x4x4) pulled from Landcruiser, featuring a solid front axle, transfer case and Toyota Motorsport rear axle."

Ok im not a Toyota guy but that is awesome! However,it needs something bigger then just a 4 banger with so much mass.

So this is an actual Toyota vehicle not an aftermarket shop? That means they actually listen to their customers unlike Jeep. They need to build this thing!

That is awesome! It says it has a straight axle form the landcruiser. I wonder if is exactly the same, with the same width. It says 4x4x4 ummmm... I am thinking lockers front and rear.

I love it, the door decals remind me of my 84 4runner, and between the white rims (though not steelies) and the roll bar and the KC's it's definitely a retro look. Its like an 80's truck updated... sweetness...

I'm not that fond of the new Taco's and that 80's look makes it even more fugly.

I think they need to bring the new Hilux over here. :smokin:

I would imagine it's pretty much the exact same setup as on an FJ-80 . But yeah , pics would be nice :D

From looking at the picture of the head on shot you can see the front mounts of the radius arms like they use on the FJ80.

That taco has 80 series axles front and rear, 80 series front suspension and steering, rear taco suspension. 80 series transfer case. American Racing wheels. I think its a pretty sweet truck.

I'll be back tomorrow if anyone wants any specific pictures.

Those seats were made with extra material Toyota found from the 80's, from the original mini trucks. It was then cut and sewn for the '08 tacoma.

That's pretty bad ass for a go-fast rig. It must cut down a huge amount of unsprung weight out there at the wheel! :smokin:

Except it looks like they used the stock IFS coilovers instead of separate coils and shocks. Interesting...

just saw this...nice! but the factory alwyas has to make too many conservative changes to please the lawyers, DOT, etc...

one of us could make a great truck like this with factory fj80 and slee off road parts with an fj80 axle with locker, a set of 33'' MT's...dual 2.28 cases....start with a four door TRD package truck...or prerunner(inchworm Tcase adapter setup)...cant you get the new tacomas in 09 with the atrac system?

I had some friends take pics. It's actually not an 80 axle or arm, something non USA like a 70 series. The arms are shorter than 80 and the axle isn't as wide (actually matches the rear). I agree its a sweet ass truck though. But check out this halfass (looking) fab though...

the fab looks all like factory toyota welds. i dont know, maybe its just me. the only thing i see that doesnt look like that is the panhard bar, even then it looks like it would hold up fine for that truck in its current form.

Hey man, its a concept truck 'aight? :flipoff2:

Fab quality looks about right, ever look at the welds on your stock frame up close? A little scary if you stop to think that a robot did 1/2 of them...

Damn these crappy plastic gas tanks. Toyota needs to improve on the little things before they concentrate on the big mods. That's what Toyota used to be known for.

Maxwell1815
01-11-2009, 06:00 PM
well, considering that plastic gas tanks are lighter, and more resistive to punctures and holes, and dents, and cannot rust, i would say that they are not as crappy as one would think.
