: WInch Q about Ramsey rep 8000E
flexlarson 08-10-2002, 08:32 PM Ok anyone know about the rep 8000 E for 399 without fairlead?
Sounds like a good deal.
I run a Zuk so im sure itll pull me fine.
How about line speed? Whats the diference from the platinum?
would anyone on here recomend one?
350 Samurai 08-10-2002, 10:04 PM I had one years ago. They pull like hell, but are slow, slow, slow.
Did I mention they are slow?
If you want specifics, the Ramsey homepage should tell you exactly what the line speed is.
It is a great starter winch if that is all you can afford right now. It will have no problem pulling your Sammy out of any situation.
pmurf1 08-10-2002, 11:31 PM Seen the 9000 Platinum in action, what a piece of shit. Slow is the word for those things. I mean really slow. I may be jaded since I run a 9500 and buddy's run 8274's, but I'd never buy one. Warn 8000 is better IMO for a cheaper winch. They're slow too, but not Ramsey slow.
72zebra 08-11-2002, 01:00 AM I used one on my fullsize bogger for years. It is slow but pulls good. It did melt down a few batteries (have to know when to stop) and being on a bogger I had trouble with dirty soleniods. Superwinch S9000 is only around $200 more.
Josh 89XJ 08-11-2002, 01:29 AM The Rep 8000 isn't a bad starter winch, but that isn't what he is asking about. He's talking about the Rep 8000 E which just came out. It has a puny 1.8hp motor compared to the 3.6 of the Rep 8000. IMHO, spend the extra money on a Warn or at least something with a decent sized motor.
72zebra 08-11-2002, 01:58 AM Ahhhh... you are correct, mine wasnt the E model.

Are you sure about that? I don;t know for sure, but I am kinda figuring the REP 8000e is just the older style winch motor brought back out.
All I know is my old REP 8000 - purchased back around 1997 or so - was slow, but pulled reliably and well until the day I pulled it off to sell it.
So yes, as a starter winch, I would consider it a WONDERFUL investment to add a new tool to your rig. :)
Grandpa Jeep 08-11-2002, 08:19 AM I just went to www.ramsey.com, but I find no mention of the REP 8000E. They list a REP 8000R and a REP 8000H, but the R and H refer to the Roller fairlead and Hawse fairlead respectively.
I also have an older Ramsey REP 8000 on my '85 Chevy fullsize truck and have been able to drag it across wet but otherwise clear pavement with the brakes locked. (talk about mall wheeling, I was trying to pull a Jeep GC out of a snow drift at the mall:D )
Anyway, it's been a reliable winch, but it is slow.
landusepbb 08-11-2002, 08:51 AM The Ramsey REPs are JUNK! If you want a real winch, at least get one with a series wound motor, not a permanent magnet motor which is what the REPs have. A permanent magnet looses a little bit of power every time you use it. You will note that ALL Warns are series wound. In other words, if you are set on getting a Ramsey, stay away from their cheaper winches with permanent magnet motors. They are meant as very light duty winches, not up to a lot of use.
Josh 89XJ 08-11-2002, 10:05 AM DRM, it isn't on the Ramsey site, but they are advertising it in some of the 4x4 magazines as a new winch.
Sharp 08-11-2002, 11:01 AM seems like they are selling it on the side as a no name brand too:
this is from a local Princess auto sale book:

same crappy plastic leaver for the clutch.
Edit : Note that the price is in Canadian!

He won't need to use it much, hes got a Samurai. :flipoff2:
High5 08-13-2002, 07:36 PM i think a warn 6k is a good winch for a sami. a buddy of mine runs one on his and it is pretty fast and plenty of power for a zuk. his is lengthened and runs d44's too so it is a bit heavier than a standard zuk. if you read the warn page you'll see that the 6k winch is faster than the m8000. anyway.....

The Warn 6K winch is an excellent winch, you won't find anything better for the money. I'v had one on my CJ-7 for 16 years, used it more times than I can remember, and only had to use the snatchblock once. It pulls much more than advertised, I would say it would probably outpull a Ramsey REP series 8K winch. The only time I had to use the snatchblock with my 6K was pulling a 3/4 ton Dodge out of the Gila River, it had sat overnight, sunk up to the doors in river mud. Chained my Jeep to a pickup, snatchblock to the sunk truck, hooked the end of the cable to a railroad car that was embedded in the bank for erosion control. I succeeded getting it out where a backhoe, and a Cat couldn't. In other words, I can't say enough good things about that little 6K Warn.:D
