I was under the impression that the 4.6 Windsor motor would retain the windsor bolt pattern. Anyone have any oppinions?
I work at Ford, an every one I work with has a different idea.
are we just gonna have to try and bolt one up?

LOL, I am currently asking this same question a couple posts down. It seems like all the answers are varied.

I have a 5.0L V8 (windsor pattern) and am trying to figure out if I can bolt-up a 4R70W that came behind a 4.6. (I know ford made 4R70W's (AODE-W) that were behind F-150 5.0's and Explorer 5.0's)

Hope someone has an answer!

I can tell you that a t5 will bolt up to the old 5.0 fox body and others and to the 4.6, the 4.6 uses a 0 balance flywheel where the 5.0 uses a weighted balance that varies on the year and there are various different size clutches but yes the bell housing bolt patterns are the same.

Well I dont know if its all good news. The bellhousing pattern is the same on the t5 I know but I also think I recall that the input shaft length is maybe different? I do know that the clutch on the t5 and flywheel will interchange w/ the 5.0/4.6 but the flywheel balance needs to be changed and there maybe interference with the input shaft length but I do not know for sure. I am running a 302 / c4 soon to be in my YJ. ....just got to go find a beater to drive for a few weeks (months!!!) so I can do the swap.

-I am only 100% positive about the clutch on the t5 and rebalanced t5 flywheel will swap between the two motors.

Cool deal,
I'm putting a 4.6 in front of a dodge NV4500HD in my 63 FJ-40.
What a combo huh? Ford motor, dodge trans. jeep t/c, and ford 9" axles.

Well since you ask, I think the 4.6 is a poor engine to swap into something especially a '63 non-emmission vehicle. I would just go w/ the 5.0 as it is a much easier swap, and cheaper as well. Of course if your getting an NV4500 you probably got cash to spend .... Just my oppinion since you did kinda ask. Good Luck w/ whatever route you take.

I'm looking at the 4.6 for the injection, D.I.S., and cause there cheap. I work for ford, so I already have a pile of spare gaskets, hoses, coils ect. And the motor kicks ass. it will run at 6000 rpms all day long. a 5.0 although good in it's day, is old school.

Holy old thread batman! BTW, this information is not completely correct. From what I understand the early 4.6 castings were the same, but anything after 1993 (F3TE) is a newer bellhousing pattern that is exclusive to the modular engine family. (all V8 and V10 engines)

I have a 2001 2v 4.6 that I want to put into a 1997 expedition that has a bad 4.6. Is this possible? Thanks for any help. I just want to get rid of this extra engine sitting in my garage.

Yes, anything 93 and up is the same bellhousing. As far as wiring harness, I am pretty sure they are the same but this may not be true. You may want to search on some other Ford forums to back this up.

I am feeling nice today, so I won't flame you, but next time DON'T POST UP NEW QUESTIONS IN OLD THREADS! Proper etiquette for this forum is to search, search, and then search some more (not just on pirate), and if you cannot find the answer then post a new question. Read around here a bunch and get a feel for it, most newbies don't last long because they don't follow the protocol.
