: 14 Bolt Question

I've just replaced my rear Dana44 with a 14 bolt rear axle and have some questions.

I have had more experience working on the Jeep axles, so maybe I am behind the curve on setting this rear end up.

I have got the gears mated with proper backlash, but have a carrier bearing that is getting hot. According to my reading they say you can't really put too much preload on the carrier bearings? Is this true because I cranked the adjusters towards each other to load them good so the case wouldn't move.
Maybe my mistake?

Also do you fill the hubs somehow or just let the oil run out to them. I've heard of people burning up wheel bearings on newly built rearends?

i would say you have them a little tight.. not sure what else to tell ya.. i never read directions.. just set them up in mine.. i adjusted them till they were snug.. or tight.. but i didn't crank them down tight.. if that makes any sense.. got the backlash where i wanted and it's been doing fine.. and the lube just started leaking out of one of my tubes this past trip.. so i am about to tear into it and see if i can stop it.. and to check the axle out.. it's on its second season..

Have you read the 14 bolt bible by Bill Vista. I printed it and read it while I build my 14 bolt. So far everything is good to go.:D

dude unless you took a hammer and punch to the spanner I really doubt you put so much preload on the carrier bearings to cause them to fail. how did you do the break in?? how tight is the backlash? the way I get oil in the hubs is to jack up one side of the axle and let the oil seep through the carrier bearings to the hubs. then move the jack and do the other side. i would let it sit for about 20-30 min per side that way you know its got oil before you go driving it. im sure im not the perfect one by no means but I have done a few gear setups in my time.

Yes, I totally disassembled this rear axle and put all new pinion and carrier bearings in.

Then I found the 1 side was still getting hot.

Then I noticed the exhaust was pointing right there...:homer:

I am such an idiot.

Well I guess I was paranoid, because I had a wheel bearing fail on the 1st test drive.

LMAO at myself...
