hi, newb here. I just bought an 88 GMC Suburban 1500 series. Its a 4x4 and runs great. Mu problem is the rear end is a little lower that the front. I think the leaf springs are sagging. I want to be able to tow a 20ft camper without the headlights pointing in the sky. I know I need to buy shocks, but what else can I do? this is a 100% stock ride.
Thanks!

Buy a set of firestone ride right air bags. Fixed my 91 Burb with the same problem and made towing height much better. Costs about $240, well worth it and easy to install.

Go to the wrecking yard and buy some 3/4 ton springs. Go to the spring shop and have them rearched. Install and tow away. Should cost less than the air bags and an easy bolt in. Make sure the springs are off the same body style sub or truck.

I went to the junk yard and just added another leaf to my stack... cost $15 to do both sides...

cool...thanks for the input. Would something like Add-a-Leaf springs do it? or would they ride really rough with no trailer on?

shocks will have no effect on vehicle ride height, only dampen suspension movement.

Aftermarket add a leafs are designed to lift and so yea they will stiffen up the spring some what. I think stock 1/2 ton Suburbans have 4 leafs and 3/4 tons have 5, maybe six, depending on the GVW (excluding the overload). thats why I recommend the entire 3/4 ton spring set. I just had a set rearched for 65 dollars. You can probably buy the springs at the wrecking yard for 50 bucks or less. I bet you can do the whole deal for less than 150 bucks.

One thing to figure into the mix here is that once springs start to sag, they have lost a lot of their spring back properties and are weaker than stock.
So adding a leaf to sagging springs is not as harsh as adding to good springs and you will get lift back from the sag, but not addded from stock. So if you are sagged 2" the add-a-leaf will get you back to stock height.
Keep in mind this is a bandaid and those worn out springs will just continue to go downhill.
You can buy a good set of lift springs for like $350 brand new or $150 - $200 on Craigslist. Seems like a lot of people are taking their lifts off to go with smaller tires for fuel economy, good thing is most of those vehicles were just street rigs and mall crawlers.
