Hey what's up brothers.

I have a couple quick questions on engine swaps for my CJ7. I recently purchased my new rig and one thing I have noticed is the engine is definately showing it's age. Currently it has the 258 I6. I have been wondering what I should do, either completely rebuild the current engine or swap in something with more power. I am leaning towards a total swap but I am not to familiar with what would be a good swap. I have T5 tranny which is in great condition so I would like to keep it but I don't know what engines would directly bolt in place of the 258. I know there's the 304, 360 options but are there any more you all know of. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks brothers.

IF you want a V8 the T5 will not hold up. I think a good option would be a 4.0L.

IMO, best bang for your buck is keep the 258, rebuild it with a 4.0 head and Mopar FI.

You have a lot of options, any AMC v8 290,304,343,360,390,401. Or another I6, 231,258,or 4.0. The best bang for buck would be the 343. However, I would doubt that you would find one. Easest of course would be a 258. With any AMC you will end up spending more in parts then they are worth. You can get a better value if you do some type of pervertion. However now you will end up spending more money in either adapters, or diffrent drivetrain.

The T5 tranny is not a bad one to use behind a v8. Is it the best choice, no. As long you don't beat on to hard it will be fine. I like to use what I have laying around, or what my friends have laying around.

The ONLY advantage a Jeep T5 has is it has a fairly low first gear for a non granny trans, 4.03:1. It can be made to live behind a 4 or 6 if you are careful, I can attest to that, and I wheel in some of the more difficult terrain around, Farmington ,NM, but I would not recommend that trans if you have other options.
