A lot of it comes down to personall preferance. Autos can shift during a climb and in mud, they crawl around smoother. Manuals are typically much more durable, autos can generate a lot of heat and that's what usually kills them. If you don't have enough gearing crawling around with a manual can be difficult and letting the clutch slip too much is obviously bad for it. Clutchs don't typically like muddy water inside the bell housing either. Personally I like manuals.

Personally, I don't think people set out to buy an automatic. I think it's a circumstance thing - they just end up with one and go ahead and wheel it.

Every vehicle I've ever had was a stick.

i wheeled for years with a stick because of what the other two guys mentioned. It's just what everyone else was doing, so i never really thought about it.
That being said, i switched to an auto about 3 years ago and would NEVER go back to a manual. a stick is great for around town, but not having to run 3 pedals with 2 feet is pretty nice. If you've got a nice tranny cooler with a fan, an automatic will last years.

You'll get a little lower gearing with a manual, but i went with a 700r4 and ended up with just over 3.0 to 1 first gear.

If you don't have enough gear with a manual trans for the engine to slowly pull you up any obstacle at an idle (no throttle applied), it certainly can suck. But having that, you only need to work two pedals :D

The auto would still reign king in a mud bog where it can shift while under power.

I've wheeled with both, prefer the auto. manual can be more technical, but can
also shock-load drive train. autos are smoother, definitely run a cooler, and
if you crawl, a temp. gauge for trans.fluid can be a lifesaver.

I have run both in the same truck. I love the auto.

depends what kind of offroading you are talking about. For the rock crawling that this site caters to mostly, auto is the best choice.

Large tranny cooler w/ fan and temp gauge for tranny a must...

i never really looked at it like that but thats pretty much how it ends up. i had a daily driver that was a 4x4 manual. used to take it out once and a while on mild trails and hated it,
