this is probably a stupid noob question but i'll shoot anyways.

My daily driver/trail rig is my EB. I got tired of those plastic flares etc, and now I was trying to think of a way to make them out of metal. I like the look of EBs with uncut fenders but i don't like the clearance.. i want that "finished" flared fender look. So is it a feasible project to make flares out of metal? any tips on how it could be done?

I know looks isn't exactly a concern here but hey.. i bought it cause it's a classic, and i DD it so it needs to look somewhat good :flipoff2: i only asked here cause I'm sure someone could help  thanks!

Find someone with a tubing bender to create a tube outline of the flares you want. Tie it in solid so that rubbing on rocks/trees won't fubar your flares. Form the flares out of sheet metal. If you want to get fancy by "crowning" the sheet, look at Eastwood or other specialty rag and get one of their shaping bags. Basically a leather billow full of sand or similar material that lets you work sheet into crowned shapes. Takes allot of practice though. When your done, you can use body filler (thin applications done right are VERY strong) to smooth out the hammer marks and call it done. Or just paint with bed liner or something...

if your good, you wont have hammer marks.

Basically it means making a convex panel.

To use a bag without leaving marks needing filler requires serious skill with things like a slapping hammer among other things. Not likely to find those skills easily... :D

I know a guy around here who had an exhaust shop that specializes in Semi-truck stuff bend him a piece of big (like 5") muffler tube into the right shape for his back fenders....then he sectioned out the top crowned curves...

Another idea is to go buy a couple of utility trailer fenders and section off just the outside edge

I know a local body man that molds in the stock front Toyota pick-up flares, on bronco's. I'll see if I can find some pictures, I think they look pretty clean.

The white one has them also, but this is the best picture of it, that I could find.
