: cummins in a rover
road1will 08-11-2002, 05:21 PM while i was on vaca i met up with a guy who has a ford 300ci inline six in his 109. he is an awesome fabber and has it hooked to a T18 with a series transfer case via his own adapter. he was telling me how he really wanted to convert it to a diesel cause he was getting shitty gas mileage and said that the BIG cummins six (6BT5.9) is only an inch longer overall than his 300. now dont get me wrong, the 300 was a tight fit, but he hadnt pushed his breakfast panel forward at all yet so there is your extra inch.
now the question is, if you could find a way around the weight issue, then this swap would be the ultimate. btw a cummins 6BT weighs 900lbs
comments? the only way i could figure of getting around the weight would be to add some ballast to the rear to help with the weight distribution. that or have a really long chassis. hmmmmmm, maybe something like a 145? with the defender nose on it the cummins should fit nicely... :D
Leafsprung 08-11-2002, 06:41 PM The length is a concern, but the height is also an issue, that motor is about a 3 ft tall. Weight is also significant. It will also be loud as hell with that motor (its direct injection) The 4B has plenty of power and is not as long, but still very tall and produces more vibrations. 6A is a better size, and not as noisey but has less power. For an in town rig, a diesel rover is swell. For a long haul rig, mileage is great but I rather spend more money on gas and be able to hear the doorbell when Im forty. Take it from me, Ive been driving diesel rovers daily for years.

road1will 08-11-2002, 07:18 PM well i know that a 4b can fit in a rover, so the height thing works out. personally i would never put a 6b in a small rover, too heavy and too much power. i like the size and power of a slightly upgraded 4bt (200hp) and i think that it would work in a 109 very nicely.
now the main advantage of the 6a to me is that right now, i could modify the rover for a chevy 292, and put one of those in, then later on when i have the money put in a 6at.
however the one thing i dont like about the 6at is the fact that it is not upgradeable. i like the 4bt a lot for that reason alone, that if i wanted a 325hp motor, i could do it. would i? probably not, but its nice to know that you arent stuck at 130hp forever.
Leafsprung 08-12-2002, 07:16 AM Well, simply because banks doesnt make a "kit" for a 6AT doesnt mean you cant crank it up. Ive seen em hopped up nicely.

The highest automotive rating for the B3.9 is 130 hp so 200hp is more than a slight upgrade. It's easily achieved though. 325 hp would not be a very practical rating to achieve since the marine version of the 3.9 is 250 hp. The issue I see is clearing the oil pan with the axle due to the height. The 3.9 is the same height as the 5.9, really the same motor with 2 less cylinders.
fcfred 08-12-2002, 07:00 PM did you know that this has been done with a cummins 3.3 six and is being done with a 5.9, I bet you can't guess whose done it and is going to do another for his pops?;)
whoops I didn't read your whole post Ike
broke any more stuff on your rig? I hear you abuse that thing.
5.9ctd_fj40 08-12-2002, 11:31 PM ive got a 5.9 in my fj40 it fits rather nicely. i used a "safe" measurement of 38" overall engine length. its sprungover with stock springs. i have an Afco radiator up front with an electric pusher fan. by the way banks "hop up parts" are:rainbow: oh yah its a 1990 non intercooled 160 hp 5.9 i have an aftercooler that sits on the head but havent mounted it yet. ill try to get some pics soon:cool:
Leafsprung 08-12-2002, 11:34 PM The 6B is actually a tad taller (like 3 inches). It can be made to fit, although perhaps just barely. Its a lot more trouble and expense than a V8. Pros: mileage, longevity, low end torque, quirkyness. Cons: weight, expense, noise, difficulty in fitting, throttle response. Up to you . . . .
fcfred:
As for my rig, it gets beat on now and then. Its holding up pretty well, since I bought it Ive only broken:
-one salsbury rear halfshaft (twisting my way through set# 2)
-one salsbury 6 bolt drive flange
-one transfer case rear ouput shaft
-one gas tank
-one front driveshaft
-three shackle bolts (shouldered SII shackle bolts suck)
-one rim
-one handbrake
I dont get to wheel it that often though (good thing, its my only vehicle). Im taking it to the rally in moab, 3000 mile trip plus trails might add to the list.

PS: who told you I abuse it?

You're right about the Banks parts, for your motor they have nothing that increases power. In your case you just turn the screw in and adjust the AFC diaphram to get what you want. That water jacket aftercooler should be nice, especially for a vehicle that goes slow on a trail.
