Im looking at an '89 Range Rover. I am wondering what size tires will the axels take; and is there a landrover specific site I can go to?

An '89 has 10 spline axles that won't survive a locker or large tires. You can swap the outer stubs/ spindles and hubs and switch to later 1.25" 24 spline stuff with aftermarket HD options.

I had a 92 that ran 31s with open diffs no problem. Much bigger though and the axles are done. http://www.get-rhino.com/parts/axels.php they have fair prices on rover parts.

So FzJ-80 axels would be a great upgrade?

Absolutely do NOT go there to buy parts, it was shady back before the owner dropped of the face of the earth, who knows what's going on now.

The rover section here is pretty good, and LRRForums.com is very newbie friendly.

As far as axles, the spider gears are the weak link, any upgraded locker will solve that problem. Then your 10-splines will be about as strong as the CVs, however it's really easy to switch to 24-spline axles when swapping diffs. The 24spline axles in my disco have held up fine with 33x12.5s , broken a couple CVs, but considering what I've put them through I'm not too bummed. Will be ordering some HD junk from Rovertracks soon, should have me covered for pretty much anything I'm doing in a full boddied Disco with 33s. Buggy is in the works for the rest of the places I want to go.

Obviously we use a Rangie parts because they are available and cheap, I've been given 2 V8's and a pile of axles recently, so we can abuse them until they break.

I agree with maxyedor, that's our experience as well.
Many of us run 10 spline stuff and upgrade the carrier to a 4 pin or aftermarket carrier with a locker.

A common trick is to make the shaft outboard of the CV on the short front side into a 'fuse' by turning a small groove in the shaft to just below the diameter of the splines, this will be the first thing to break and is a 10 minute job to change with an easily carried spare. It's way easier than changing CV's or diff's on the trail.
