: A Little Tease - look whats up in the UK
ashtrans 11-11-2008, 06:12 AM Congratulations Keith, looks like you are one step ahead of us !
We are also working on a super strong axle using some Ford 9" parts, great minds think alike !
Although we still have quite a lot of work to do I wanted to post this now so that when we do release it, it's quite clear we have not copied your ideas.
an outline of our design is :
Front
keep original axle casing, may need strengthening
new 3rd housing with rover bolt pattern, 35 spline ARB, 9" 4.11, High pinion.
new bolt on knuckles
Heavy Duty RCV Dana 60 CV joints, 35 spline
4340 35 spline RCV shafts
New stub axles
modified hubs to accept larger bearings
stock calipers, stock rotors, stock wheels (to keep cost down)
Rear
keep original axle casing, may need strengthening
new 3rd housing with rover bolt pattern, 35 spline ARB, 9" 4.11, High pinion.
4340 35 spline RCV shafts
New stub axles
modified hubs to accept larger bearings

Dave-
nice work! FWIW I ran rover "outers" similar to what you show on my 9"s under my defender when I first had them built. With 37s and an auto with little compression braking the stock brakes were a bit overwhelmed. You have a lot more 110s on your side of the pond and this may be more of an issue with the heavier cars. I went to 1 ton calipers and rotors in the front, keeping rover bolt pattern, retaining the rear rover brake parts and this is better. I did shed my 90 for a buggy with these same axles and lost about 2K pounds but went to 39" tires. The lower gear in the 700R4 still wants to overrun the brakes at times.
You are probably well aware, but check the thread in general discussion on the Hi9 35 spline ARB engagement discussion as you work out your final product. I got one of the very first 35 spine 9" ARBs and it had some issues, but ARB took care of it and everything has been great since.
Keep the info and pics coming!
revor 11-11-2008, 08:47 AM I dunno about a step ahead, aside from the diff what I've put together (this time and the last pair) is for much different market.
Building a 9" for the "Rover infused" market would require a bit more creativity in my book. We can buy Deadenbear knuckes, Spidertrax Knuckles, Wrecking yard Knuckles all day long with the technology already available to stick GM brakes, Ford Brakes, Toyota Brakes right at our fingertips.
Over here once a guy has made the choice to build that 9" axle, in many cases, he's lost the need to use Rover wheels, brakes and other bits so there's not that to worry about either.
Designing a knuckle that uses the what is locally available requires a fresh start!
Kudos!

Thats bad ass! Very cool. Kudos to you for keeping on innovation for us rover owners. To parrot what Tis said, the brakes may be a concern. You may also want to address how you can widen the track width. If you are running tires big enough to necessitate that type of strenth, you usually need them wider to steer.

Your way too humble. Your rear outer solution with a rover bolt pattern is simplistic awesomeness. And the front end solution with a rover pattern and all 1 ton brakes and knuckles rules. ;)
pendy 11-12-2008, 09:04 AM David Ashcroft,
Are you guys developing this stuff for tractors over in UK as well? I thought I saw some mid size tractor vendors using your business goods.
Maybe we can bring back the forestry units with these drivetrain upgrades!
ashtrans 11-14-2008, 06:15 AM Hi,
thanks for your comments,
The knuckles will add 30mm to each side, not sure if this will be enough,
we may be able to add brackets to fit twin calipers to help braking.
Hi Jim,
we do supply autoboxes and transfer cases for crop sprayers but no axle parts,

Hi,
If it helps to know, to max steering on a radius arm setup with 40's I had to widen the front by 5.5in and I still hit the radius arms pretty good.
Cheers
