Hello All,
I am a HS shop teacher and am thinking of my project for next school year. We are into a CJ right now and enjoying it. I am looking for a truck that is reliable and able to do alot of stuff, including camping etc.
I have been a Willys Wagon nut for quite awhile now. My first 4x4 was one in fact. I did a SPOA and ran 35's on it. It was a bit too tall, and is long gone.
The next one was a 55 what I swapped a Wagoneer Frame under with SPOA and Dana 44's etc. I rebuilt the floors etc and and painted it. It had regular Wagoneer springs, and High steer etc. I got it driveable off-road and then never finished it off completely. It had several design features that were not working for me. I intended it to be a do it all rig, but when it was all said and done, it came out too tall (body mount design) did not have enough power etc. It did ride really well and so forth.
What I need out of the new one:
1. A do it all rig. Sometimes DD, mild towing, reliable, able to get parts anywhere, capable of running some fairly gnarly trails. In other words, I want a do it all 4x4 that is reasonably economical to operate. I am willing to sacrifice in some areas for the whole. IE, I know a 350/351 has more power, but I am willing to not tow as much weight to keep the 5.0 kinda thing because of what it offers.
What I have:
Four mid-50's wagons. One is complete enough to drive with a 5.0 in it. Lots of good steel, titles on two. Plus alot of spare parts. I even have a rot free couple of tailgates if you can believe it.
4 Offset Dana 44 rears
A few 44 fronts-All out of wagoneers
Lots of good wagoneer parts in general, such as steering, brakes etc.
Dana 18 transfercases-lots
The Plan:
Frame: I would like to use the stock frame on this one. I have access to all the metalworking tools, and the help to get things done. Boxed and modified as needed.
Axles: Offset 44's, Rear detroit, front Tru-Trac
Engine: Ford 302, headers, aluminum intake-maybe mild cam.
Transmission: Manual-4-speed, NP 435
T.case: Dana 18 t.case-I really want to use this one.
Springs: Stock Waggy rears-I have some new ones. Not sure on the fronts.
SPOA: It has to be. SPUA is not going to work. I will do what I need to to get it to work.
Tires: 35" tires for most of the daily duties. Possibly some 38' tires for deep snow only.
Thoughts and opinions:
Any large flaws in the plan here? Just looking for ideas and constructive criticism. I am looking at the other post here.
