: Spring wrap with Toy rear spring in front
Brutpwr 08-11-2002, 10:25 PM Those of you with time some trail time on your Toyota rears springs used up front...??? How much lift are you getting and did they sag any? I assume most of you have removed the overload leaf? How do you deal with the extreme spring wrap especially when in reverse especially when backing up hill or on the brakes down hill. How do you keep the ujoints from binding up when the axle rotates 20+ degrees :( Seems as if the overload is needed as even with additional springs inserted and with them clamped up tightly the springs like to "S" shape as much as they like to go up and down.

Wilson 08-11-2002, 10:30 PM The only way to get rid of it is to make a trac. bar for it. I used toy rear springs on the front of a sami and it does exactly what you described. The owner is choosing to deal with it. I would make a shackle style traction bar.
4CrawlR 08-11-2002, 11:37 PM An anti-wrap leaf helps a great deal:

Brutpwr 08-12-2002, 01:42 AM Yeah...I know the traction leaves should work. They were the only way I could get rid of the wheel hop I had on my 450 HP full time (at the time) four wheel drive tow rig!
Jason :)
fabricator 08-12-2002, 02:52 AM i had so much rap with the 44044's that
i had to put the factory antiwrap bar back in the front.
I added a 2" extension on it to accomidate for the lift.
still flexes well on the ramp.
will be trail tested this weekend.
Jason---glad I worked around the nose-dive...I just moved the shackle to the front. I use 44044 springs. http://dreamwater.com/zuk/sr.html but I agree, you will have to re-install the torque rod. Don't rip it out of the frame like I did back in 86.

I got about 1.5" of lift with a combo pack of stock rears and used Rancho 3" front leaves. They did not sag much at all, but were VERY soft.

Yes - you can't just throw a set of stock rears up front "as-is" and expect them to work.

Never had a problem with it.

morpheus 08-12-2002, 06:38 AM Brutpwr, you don't state how many leaves you have in your packs ?
- jack
Brutpwr 08-12-2002, 05:30 PM Tried the stock 3 leafs w/o the overload and it was way to soft. Now it has 6 leafs and is better but it hops. My buddy just ordered some All Pro 4" springs with the ubolt kit earlier today so we'll see how that works out! :)

On mine: 6 leaves plus anti-wrap leaf = no wheel hop.
Really easy to add; cut a spare leaf or two in half, put long spring clamp upside down on the end, re-arch the leaf to have a bit more arch than the rest of the pack and set it on top.
Cutting spring steel -> Cutoff saw
Drilling spring steel -> Carbide drill bit
I had at one time very recently run my rears up with the overload and did not like the setup...to soft and not very much in height for what I am running, to much wrap with them......I was in transition to going with a set from Boogerboy(weldz)...LOL.. in which I really like
Brutpwr 08-12-2002, 10:31 PM I'm going to try the traction leaves as they work well on my tow rig. Great write up "4CrawlR" by the way.
Jason :)
mudpuppyto 08-12-2002, 10:48 PM i am using a 3" rough country lift with 2 rear leafs added into the pack. six leafs total in the front .they have plenty of flex and suport my 302. before i put the rears in they were sagging pretty bad becouse they were made for the 4 banger. i took the traction bar out becouse i dont have any problems with wrap yet.

What type of blade?
85TrailToy 08-13-2002, 04:05 AM Rears up front with Rancho 60622 AAL. 3"+ lift, no wrap, no sag.

A metal cutting abrasive disc, of course. Don't try any sort of toothed blade on spring steel.
For drilling, I get a set of cheap carbide masonary bits and sharped them with a good sharp edge on them. They work quite well, just work up on bit size at a time.
miniyota 08-13-2002, 08:58 AM when my truck was stock back in the day and i was wheeling with 235/75/15's:rolleyes: i had a lot of front axle hop.
since then i have put my rears up front with an add a leaf and have not had any hop. they are awesome up front. they flex like mad moved my axle forward. they are good!
but the rear is another story its going to go to coils soon! leafs in the rear suck!

Anti-wrap leaves work well in back, too. Having them on both axles works surprisingly well, much better than just on one axle.
Lemoore-on 08-13-2002, 01:28 PM I agree with DRM. I run the two main leafs from the rear and then the long leaf out of a Rancho 3" pack (front), then the three shortest leaves from a OEM pack from an 80 Toy. I dont experiance any wrap or binding and its very soft.
