I'm trying to figure out what i need to do to bolt a TH350 into my CJ5. I've got an AMC 401 from a '76 Waggy in there, and i'm positive they dont just bolt right up. there is a converter thats made for the TH400, however with that tranny i'll have a really short drive shaft and would wreak havoc in my 9" rear. can anyone give me some info on how to go about completing this swap? or know of an automatic tranny that will fit in there? Thanks.

I have a 401 turbo 400 dana 20 setup in my wrangler ... I use the amc turbo400 tranny so no adapter is needed. I have yet to have any rear drive shaft issues.

your wranglers WB is probably longer than mine, stock '75 CJ5 wheelbase is 86" .... puts my rear driveshaft at right around 9" so too much throttle and i'll snap some stuff ...

You can just bolt up a 999 or 727, they both use the same linkage, T-case adapters, 23 spline...the 999 is a better option because it is for a pass drop. Sell the 350 to someone who needs it and use the chrysler, its good to 600HP for the 727 and 3-400hp for the 999 and it is stock and might even work with your factory crossmember. Tim

Your driveshaft is gonna be pretty short I believe with an auto in a CJ5.Might have to move the motor forward to keep a good rear driveshaft in it.Or move the rear back if it will work for you.If your adapting the t350 to the 401 and the dana 20/300 thats gonna get expensive.

ok, dont actually have the 350 right now ... just doing research before buying ... what year and car should i look for to get the 727? i'm also replacing the T-case with a Dana 300 ... will that make a diff? or would it still be a good fit? and if it makes diff what extra parts do i need to buy to make them match up?

I have a amc to chebby adapter for sale if you go that route. The adapter is from AA and its brand new, but I will sell it low.

The only "car" I can think of getting an AMC pattern 904 4x4 trans from is an AMC Eagle from late 70s-early 80s. You need something from a Jeep application.

So its looking like i probably wont be able to fit an auto under there comfortably, how about a 5 speed? what model would i be looking at to bolt up for one of those? I'll be using everdrive.com to get my hands on the tranny, so if you happen to know what vehicle and year it comes out of it would be greatly appreciated. if not i can look it up and see. Thanks

Give advance adapters a call they know all the combination and what will work. They helped me with my first one. I had a 1980 cj5 w/350sb and 350 tranny. My dshaft was short, the only thing i had trouble with was the straps on the u joints. If you have that swap over to the yokes with u bolts.I could bust those straps from about a 15mph roll.

Any 80's CJ7 with an auto is going to be a 999, first generation of the wrangler with a 4.2 has the 999, if you want/need the 727, look at any late 70's and newer waggy with the 360. There were some CJ5's built with the 999 auto for the 80's, so it is doable. Tim

I'm 99.9% positive the CJ5 never came with an auto as an option. There's always the powerglide as an option for an auto, they're one of the shortest options in the way of automatics and i've seen a few 5's over the years with them.

I know for a fact they came with auto's I had to work on one with a quadratrac setup, I also had a friend that had one that I think was a 80-81 Cj5, column shift, had either a 999 or a 909....Tim

In a 5 any auto you use will end up with a short drive shaft, but it can work. Why not bolt a 727 to the 401 and run a dana 300 transfer case?
