If there was a newb section for Toyota's i'd use it. :p My buddy want to put different rims on his '06 access cab (whatever that is) Tacoma. It's 4x4, auto, V6, TRD and six lug.
It currently has stock 16" rims and he wants to go to a 15" rim on a little larger than stock tires. he's hoping to keep the tires from hanging outside the wheel wells, similar to stock. my only concern was caliper interference with the smaller rim.
I told him i knew where to get the answers so i'm hoping you guys can help me out. thanks.

there is. its newbie general 4x4. http://pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=43
he can run 15" rims. if he wants to keep the tire from sticking out hes going to want to run atleast a 4.5 - 5" back spaced wheel.

are you sure? i think that it would interfere with the calipers

Don't the lowest trim package trucks come with 15s? I don't think there is a different brake package between trims so there should theoretically be no problems.

Yeah there is a reason trucks come with 16" wheels from the factory. My truck came with 15" wheels from the dealer (1998 Taco) so I was able to use pretty much any 15" wheel. The new 05+ Tacoma's are most likely going to be all 16" wheels due to a bigger truck that weighs more, thus requiring bigger brakes (unless you have one of the tiny standard cab 4cyl trucks, in which case, I am not sure about).

Why does your buddy want to go 15" wheels anyway? More tire selections? To run a 15" wheel, you'll probably have to run wheel spacers to clear the calipers.

If he ends up staying with the 16" wheel size, standard 3.75-4" of backspacing should keep the tires inside the wheel wells. In stock form, tires tend to be sucked into the fender a little so going with a slightly smaller backspacing won't hurt much.

did that change above 98? my room mates taco is a 2000 and i think his rims are bigger than 15"s. ill check tomorrow. people still run those black steel wheel 15s though when the upgrade there tires and get a lift? ill measure them tomorrow.

i run 15" wheels on my 99 but i dont have abs. apparently abs calipers are a little bigger. so from what i hear if you run a 15" wheel on a abs truck you either have to grind down the caliper some or run spacers. this is for the pre 05 trucks, but i imagine its the same for the 05+ trucks as well since i believe they all have abs.

he probably wants 15s cause tires are cheaper. i know ill be running 15s as long as possible for that one reason.

My 99 trd has abs and factory 15" wheels. I think there is only a problem if it came with 16's and you want to go down to 15's.

this is why i asked here, thanks for all the info guys. his trucks came with 16's but as far as ABS, i'm not sure, i assume it would.
he just wants some steel wheels for driving on some wooded trails and i told him there is a larger selection of tires for 15's, especially used tires.

from 02 and up, toyota made there there calipers different. they made it with a lip on it causing most 15 in rims to rub and not work. i would stick with a 16in rim. my dad lifted is 07 and HAD to run a 16in rim. the caliper doesn't like anything under that...
