well this thing's a street legal 2 stroke. someone pulled some strings along the lines and got it all legal like :D

I'm not a newbie to the dirt bike scene. raced motocross on the east coast from age 4-14 and haven't owned a bike since I lived in MA. so I haven't kept up on any rules and never got into the street legal scene.....so what's the story w/ CA and permits and licenses. I guess I'll go get the m/c handbook tomorrow at dmv and get a permit tomorrow so I can ride it. tell me what you know :D

the riding test is a joke.
they gave me 4 tests in the parking lot.

first you ride around some spaced out cones.
then you ride around in circles.
then you ride in lines and circles.
and last you accelerate as fast as you can while going through 3 gears and then stop at a point the instructor points to.
all without touching the ground. so don't borrow a chopper to take the test on.

the written test is something you'd expect from someone that never rode a motorcycle in their life. just think of what someone smart that's never rode would think.

Don't they make you take a MC safety course before you can take the test at DMV?

it might have changed in ten years. but i didn't take any kind of saftey course. i just took the written and a month or so later i took the ridden test.

I got in trouble for standing it on the front wheel when they said to stop fast. But the next guy in line crashed when trying to stop so the guy figured it out that i knew how to ride. Read the book though.

great info thanks guys. I think there is a safety course now that U have to take at roseville or redding centers for it. f-ing DMV was closed today so they can be open on saturday, wtf is that LOL :D

I got bored and took it out for a little jaunt through the back roads and little trails that connect the roads around my aptment. hehe no cops but they would have had a whore of a time catching me :D

should be funny taking the test on that bike. so can I wheelie as I click through 1st 2nd 3rd then stoppie up to the line? :D I wonder if they'll notice that it's not as street legal as it should be :D

All I know is that I've owned and been riding a street bike for the past 25 years and I can't pass the figgin ride around in a circle test on my FZR1000 for the life of me. I haven't been able to pass the driving test the last 4 times I've taken it. Even when I walk my bike around the circle with the wheel at max turn I wander out of the circle 3/4 ways around.

YES they WILL notice if the bike isnt completly street legal.... the horn HAS to work, the headlight HAS to be able to stay on with the motor off... and a hole bunch of other stuff too.... like Insurance :(

I'd say try to find a real street bike to take the test on.....

Oh and it didn't take too many strings to get a non-red stickered two-stroke street legal, I have a 95CR500 with a Ca plate :D

I just took the test like 2 months ago in Placerville. I took the written test in Rocklin about 2 weeks before. The riding test was very easy on my Honda XL 250, they checked for proof of insurance, and that was it. Did'nt check for any horns or blinkers.

I rode around the circle both ways (in first gear) then drove thru the cones (in 1st gear) and that was it. Peice of cake.

I'm curious to see how long you can ride a 2 stroke around town before running out of gas! My RM 250 does'nt go too far! Besides, what are you gonna do, ride around in the power band all the time! It's not like a 2 stroke dirt bike likes to lug much. With that said, how long do you figure the piston and rings will last?

:D

yea I should take the test on a street bike good call.

things it doesn't have :D
horn
functional signals
battery
non DOT tires.
probably plenty of other things that would just slow me down

things it does have
lots of power
effieciency
the ability to jump cop cars in a single bound
and whatever else super man can do :D

-I'm not sure how long the top end will go between rebuilds...but I know my $10k 1995 NCY prepped YZ 80 went through a top end every 3 or 4 motos  but then again that thing was so strung out it tore up most low mod 125s.
This bike's great around town and suits my riding style (complete asshole) :D it's a 360 so it's a low end machine and actually runs good below power band. (doesn't need to be cleared out every time your not in powerband for 30 seconds like most 2 strokes) I don't know much about the 360 or KTM's in general but I can't imagine it's going to eat a top end more than once every 6months to a year. it has 1300miles or so on it and I'm guessing it's still orig piston and rings. runs like a top and it'll be the daily driver next week once all the details are taken care of so I'll keep everyone informed.

i have 30,000 miles on my RD 400 top end. granted it's a twin two stroke but riding the street isn't as hard on motors as the dirt. your traction in the dirt surges the resistence on the back tire while your twisted and it just hammers on everything in the motorand trans. plus the dust, and things like me drowning my cr on last new years. dirt bikes just take a lot more abuse.
no it won't last as long as a four cycle but you won't have to carry a top end around with you. just listen for that piston slappy.
don't forget to carry premix with you. if you do a lot of cheverons carry it.

Hey Silly, just remember that if you take the test on a bike smaller than a 250cc, your license will be no good for 250cc and up! Another words, don't use your neighbors 50cc scooter for the test!

My dad used my Honda XL 250 for the test instead of his soft tail Harley.

sweet. yea you'd think that since 90% of the time offroad you're on the pipe in PB and on the street I'm just barely at 1/8th throttle trying to to speed.

I was thinking about carrying the premix in small containers each holding enough oil for 1 gallon. so add 1 gal of gas drop in the shot. yada yada. it's a 32:1 bike that's been at 40:1 all it's life on champion WP 2 synthetic. I dunno if I'm going to keep running that or not.

I used to only run maxima 927 castor (it was top in '95) not sure what's the best now but I am still partial to the 927 smell.

I just went through getting the M1 endorsement. Make sure the bike you take to the riding test has a working horn, signals, brake lights etc. or you will fail then and there. Of course, not all DMV locations do things the same. There is a class you can take that is 20 hours. It's real basic, but you can walk right in to the DMV, take your written(both Motorcycle and class C), present them with the DMV form and you got your license. I called my local mc dealer and they gave me the number for the course.

Hey Phil, if you just take the written test and get a permit it's good for like 6 months or a year I think. If I remember right the rules for riding with a permit are no passengers, no freeway, and no riding at night. At least thats how it was when I got mine. I waited as long as I could to get the license and when I took the test I couldn't do the circle to save my life on my CBR600. I think the circle is bigger now though. I ended up doing the training course because my mom wanted to do it too. Was a pretty cool class that took a weekend and you get your license when you pass. I think the phone number for info on it is 1-800-CCRIDER. A 929RR will be tough to do the test on - go down there and do a lot of practicing. I've heard of a lot of people failing it on sportbikes.
A friend of mine just did the test with a Honda 100 with "200" stickers on it(the minimum requirement) and had a hard time with the slow speed maneuvering part of the test. Of course he's one of those guys that probably shouldn't be riding a motorcycle! Try to borrow the smallest bike you can get. Dualsports are best.
Good luck!

I use a baby bottle filled with 2-stroke oil.

They hold 12oz ,are marked to the 1/2 ounce and dont leak... you can even get some with little trucks on it :p

I then made a ratio chart that had the amount of oil for 1/2 gal down to 1/8 gal. I just pull into the gas station and fill it (almost all the way) up and then add the correct amount of oil to the left side of the tank. As soon as I start the bike I jump on the pegs to help "mix" it up because the oil will sink to the bottom and you'll foul plugs and not be a happy camper.......... get it?

i run 32:1, 4 onces to a gallon, 1 ounce to a quart. i just carry a couple of bottles and use the markers on the side to measure it.
guess i'm just lazy.
