: Hammers: 2009

Okay, with the Holiday's upon us, the Hammers run in late February will be on us FAST.

For those that don't know, and are regular attendees of the Chile Challenge, it has been discussed that we would rather do a Hammers/Johnson Valley trip in lieu of the CC this/next year. Not that we don't love the CC, rather many of us would like more options than the typical 4 "extreme" trails that the CC offers.

As I discuss with fellow wheelers it is apparent that we should formalize a date asap in order to accommodate those with less than liberal vacation policies.

Though I have not seen an official announcement for the CC dates, one can reasonably expect the dates to be 18th - 21st (Feb) as it is typically run the 3rd week in Feb. *edid*: I guessed right. Those are the dates for the 2009 CC run.

A very cool option that Tiz brought up was piggy-backing with the KOH race. My thought was we could hang and watch the race, then pick 4 or so days AFTER to beat our junk into the ground.

Race day is 2/27 (Friday), one week after the CC. I for one would love to be there for race day and then wheel the 28th through the 3rd of March (4 days of wheeling).

So in summary:

Hammers 2009: 2/27 - 3/3 (or however long the psyco's would want to stay if their junk is still together! :flipoff2:

So who is in? As always I'm open to suggestions!

Funny, Pendy and I were just talking about this yesterday.

Interested. The reason for me, outside of being there for KOH, is that several teams are coming from this area and I could to try and find some trailer space to get my rig out there. It is 3 solid days of driving one way from here, not that I won't do it, but it would be an easier sell to fly out and pay some guys to haul my rig who are already going there anyway. Those are my issues to work out but doing it around that date makes it most feasible for this guy.

I think the LCQ is on Friday and the race is Saturday, but Buck or Carey will know for sure.

Cool Ben, it's going to be a blast. I've never been there (Hammers) but I hear it's like Cruses on steroids! That coupled with a HUGE trail system equals crawling heaven.

Last time I talked with Matt P. he was interested as well. Maybe someone who is close to the dude can drop the dates and see if he can commit.

Eddieman, you got your ears on? Franken? *Cough*...Pendy? Sugarbear? Others?

Matt is minus a rig right now, I will drop him a line on this trip.

Shane, if I'm coming all this way you better have something put together to wheel!

Hi Guys,

Just a few suggestions for you. I would really recommend that you get here by thursday am for the qualifier. Back Door is brutal on anything under 110in and that is going to be a sight to see. I am really looking foreword to it.

Other than that, I just want everyone to know that I think CC is harder, maybe. There are some rediculous lines that you can try in the valley but if you stay in the middle of the trails, I can't think of anything harder than nimesis. But, I am sure you guys won't stay just on the beaten path, and I really know nothing about Las Crusas.

However, for depth of trails, it rocks. Tons to do. Bring and carry your spares. These rocks are tougher on tires than most.

If my truck still runs (doubt it), I will be happy to take you guys out Sat/Sun.

Cheers.

Yup...Lake-bed for me. I've heard horror stories about blowing sand on the bed. Maybe if I put the tent on the trailer I'll be okay (?).

Anywho, I'm getting jacked already!

Again, it's not that we don't love the Chile Challenge, it's just that we've done the s a m e f o u r t r a i l s f o r s o o o o o o l o n g ...... It be awesome to have all the options that the Johnson Valley provides.

Depending on how busy it is you can duck behind some of the rocks, sorta, to camp. It is hit or miss. I have been there when it is dead calm, and when tent camping would be almost impossible. You can also get a hotel room over in Yucca about 40min away, if you wuss out. :p

That is scary, I hope they are OK. Greg has had some close ones.

Hearing more and more stories like this makes me think about why as a recreationalist I think I am immune to accidents, particularly as it relates to safety gear. Yeah, I have a harness in my buggy, but I usually only put the shoulder straps on for certain obstacles or runs, mainly just relying on the lap belt. I never wear a helmet. Oddly, I would never get on my road bike or mountain bike and ride without a helmet for anything, training ride, race, whatever. I also think back to the days when I used to snowboard without a helmet as most did and think how rediculous that was. I'd bet that nearly every professional in motorsports wouldn't go out for a practice run or anything at near maximum effort without being fully equipped and protected. I don't know if having a helmet on would have changed anything in this outcome and I'm not making any judgement about the situation, mearly relating how easliy something can go wrong unexpectedly. I would challenge you guys next time you see me on the trail to ask if I've bought a helmet yet, and if I am not fully harnessed remind me of this post.

Relating to the Hammers post, does that mean Greg is out?

He was going 45 mph when that happened. He forgot to make sure the bolt thru the steering shaft was tight. The lock nut jiggled loose. Have to say I am as guilty as anyone about not going over my rig thoroughly before a run but after this that will change. I usaully just make sure the big stuff is tight going to start paying more attention to the small stuff:)

Yes I would count him out at this time. No way will he get the buggy back together by then. If you need a guide just say the word. I will come out. know all the trails including the ones you do not here about much. FOA Hiway 19,20 and 21 are awesome trails and going back down trails like boulder dash from wrecking ball or big johnson are to much fun.

Having a qualified guide would be awesome! Thanks for the offer, and the answer is YES!

I don't even own a GPS, have never been to JV, and as I age my sense of direction has been degrading. If Grego' wants to ride along and 'partake' please extend the offer.

--D OK went over and visited Greg on friday afternoon. He looks pretty good all the bumps and scrapes are gone he is still seeing double but the doctors say it could take up to 3 months for that to heal.still a little sore and stiff but on the mend. Extended your invitation to come to the Hammers and He said as long as he is not still seeing double He will bring the 90 out and run that with us. If not he will just come along for the ride.

Also you guys should start thinking about which trails you want to run. Keep in mind about the only difference in trails at the Hammers is probable body damage and certain body damage. And bring spares. Anyone is subject to breakage at any time!!!!

Here are the actual Hammers trails. There are 10 or more trails not on this map including a couple of new ones.

We usually run Jack hammer at night and if everybody gets thru that fast enough we go and run Big Johnson. Since its your first time out we can run what ever you want. We try to hit Sunbonnet then up After Shock and finish on Outer limits get all the far stuff out of the way first. Back Door will be the evenings entertainment. I could go on and on I truly love wheeling there.

So here's a twist to the original plan that Doug proposed and he and I have talked. I don't want to change the plan based solely on my schedule but here is what seems to be unfolding. Most guys headed out are going early to pre run, ect so I've got a couple options to get my rig out and back, the only problem with the original plan is that no one is staying after Sunday. What do you guys think about going out a few days early, wheeling on the front end and staying for the race? It will be more crowded, yes but there don't seem to be any course closures, ect that have been posted that I can find. If those that are committed are cool, I'll lock down a trailer spot and buy a plane ticket...I'm assuming the closest air port is San Diego?

The race course is open to the public even during the race. If someone was a big enough ass they could run any trail they wanted. Closest air port is Ontario. also a lot easier to get in and out of.

Okay, I'm down too.

So you guy's want to run, say, Sunday 2/22 through 2/??

If so I'll take the whole week of 2/22 through 2/27 and start the moto-back on the 28th. Should be fine with this much notice.

What say the others?

Assume there are 20+ known trails, and 200+ rigs in attendance. Sounds like there might be some gaggles, but heck the Chille Challenge has 300 rigs and 4 trails. I'll assume the current spectator hot spots will be crowded, but I'm sure there is more there than can even be scratched with 5 days of gettin' it.

Sounds doable. With a tow this long I just want to eliminate as much possibility of getting whacked by slug of 33" shod trail-tampon Wranglers trying to be Shannon Cambell.

If you guys are coming out to wheel more than watch the race. I suggest that you plan to come out for some other event. It will be a zoo that whole week. It's possible to get stuck on the trail for up to 8 hours when there are that many people there. If you want to see the race you will see more of it on the live web cast. The Tin Benders Jamboree in april is the best. and Fun in the Desrt in september is also a good one.

Here is link to a video from the Jamboree in it a plane does a fly over of the lake bed. At the race expect 3 to 4 times that many people. Also some really cool footage of Back Door.

Uhhh, I'm not racin' unless you beat up another competitor and steal their number for me? The race will be sweet to watch, no doubt. The LCQ may be the best entertainment.

It would be ideal to have the trails to ourselves but will it really be any different than lining up to go on runs at the CC as Dougie mentioned? You know you love a crowd when you are pulling wheelies on the ledges.

I'm pretty sure I've got a guy who can haul it out. If I can get it back to your place or to CO I'm cool with that. I'd need to know if that was solid before I bought a plane ticket. The couple of guys who can possibly bring it out and back east are coming back the day after the race (2/28?). Other than that either week works for me.

I wasn't trying to muddy up the water, but hey we've all been on those trail rides...put it to a vote?

I still agree the week after is better. It works better for me too. Tis I have some room too if you can get it back to Phoenix. I promise I won't drive it too much

Either week? I'm assuming that means *if* you have a way to get your rig back.

Listen, I'm not opposed to getting up at 0dark30 to get to the trail-head(s) before the masses, but if it wasn't necessary then I wouldn't mind the extra sleep (and warmth of the day). Hurkin' up a 2 mile trail for 8 hours is a non-starter...Early or late is the ticket.

I mentioned this to Doug but it looks like my best bet is getting out there on the front end week; I simply can't find anyone going back later. As I stated, don't change things around on my account, I'll catch you guys over race day and just wheel the week before. This isn't totally firm yet but I don't know of anyone staying after the race outside of our group. If someone has a double trailer and can get my car back to CO then let's talk. I'm open to any suggestions.

This may be a better option than camping?

I'm seriously considering getting a toy hauler. I think I'm also going solo as the wife can't get the time off. So would anyone be interested in splitting some of the costs to have a bed and shower?

Tis, I unfortunately sold my big trailer about a year ago kind of wish I still had it so I can't help there.

Ben-

Renting a toy hauler? I'd be interested in a bed and shower(solo)as long as you are not talking about me helping you buy one...also assuming we wind up going the same week.

I'm in! I will leave CO on Wed and get to the lakebed on Thursday PM. My plan right now is to stop in Victorville, pickup a small RV, and grab some supplies before heading out to the lakebed. And then leave on Wed, maybe go visit some family/friend in Socal. Super stoked:D
